Anyway, a casino sounded like a good place to land a job, if one was available. People gambling and drinking tended to be big tippers. Or at least, that’s what I’d heard, although I’d never worked at a place like that. My mother had — briefly — when we lived near Durango. But when flooding caused by torrential rains that I’d called had damaged several of the quaint downtown area’s streets, we’d left in a hurry. It was too bad, because we were doing well there. Then again, that was where I’d been dating Tom McKenzie, who’d wanted things between us to get more serious. I didn’t know whether I wanted to contemplate what might have happened if I’d stayed. “Did you come far?” Andrea asked. “Pretty far,” I said. “From Albuquerque.” Another lie, but just a little one.
