The next day, I decided to get a late lunch at Bar 10 to fortify myself for my upcoming shift, since I didn’t know any place else in town to eat and really didn’t feel like experimenting. When I walked in, the restaurant was much less crowded than it had been the evening before. Carolyn smiled at me and waved, and I went ahead and sat down at the bar even though there were several open tables. “What can I getcha?” she asked. “Just an iced tea and a burger,” I replied. Then, since I realized that subsisting on cheeseburgers and fries probably wasn’t the way to go, I added, “But with a side salad instead of fries.
