The shocking news was all over the papers and blaring from the radio.

The headlines screamed at Violet from every street corner newsstand she passed the next morning. At the diner, she had to determinedly close her ears to keep from hearing the endless speculation about who did it, and why someone would put a bullet through Lionel Rains’ skull. It was still too soon to accept what had obviously taken place. But Violet waited through the morning for this nightmare to end. It’s just a bad dream, she kept repeating to herself, though it was soon clear that this was no dream at all. There would be no waking up to find the director alive and well.
