Chapter 11.
Skylar’s (P.O.V.)
After Sam left, I went for a shower and did my nightly routine, got into my pyjamas and went into the kitchen to grab a drink before bed. George was still sitting on the couch, texting.
“Hey, are you okay?” I asked him from the kitchen.
“Yeah, I’m just texting Seth.”
“I can’t believe you’re seeing Seth, to be honest I had no clue he was gay.” After grabbing a glass of water, I sat next to George on the couch.
“And I had no clue he was Sam’s brother. He hasn’t told me much about him.”
“Sam said he’s quite private, maybe that’s just the way he is. I’m sure he would have told you eventually.” He just shrugged. “When you did you two meet?”
“That time we were at Crushed Velvet over Easter. We met when you went to the bathroom.”
I scrunched up my nose “I don’t remember seeing him there. Makes sense Seth was there with Sam. I must have been in the bathroom for ages.”
“Literally 30 minutes. I don’t want to know what you women do in there.” We both chuckled.
“You never mentioned about him though George. Why?”
He shrugged his shoulders, “I don’t know, after we exchanged numbers at the club, we’ve texted a lot and only met up a couple of times, but it’s been nice. I guess I’m afraid it’s too good to be true. Especially now that I’ve found out he’s a millionaire and runs a large and well known company. I guess I’m a little intimidated about how successful and absolutely smoking hot he is. Damn those multicoloured eyes.”
“That he is. I’m happy for you George, I’m sorry Sam and I interrupted you guys.”
“Nah, it’s fine Precious. We were just hanging out. I guess we were both shocked about what we found out tonight. I think Seth knew he f****d up that he didn’t mention about his family and who he was sooner. I guess I’m a little confused and hurt as to why he never mentioned it to me before. He said we’d talk after this week. He has to go away for business until Friday.”
I nodded at him “Yeah he and Sam have business meetings up in Glasgow, they’re making it a two day trip to get everything sorted.”
He nodded and took my hand “How about you? Everything with you and Sam go okay? How was your dinner date with him?”
I sighed and leaned my head against the back of the couch in exhaustion, “He’s great George, tonight was wonderful. His apartment is to die for and he cooked great food and was so sweet the whole night, until…” I trailed off.
“Until…” He probed.
I explained a little bit about the incident in his living room and his burn marks, the accident he and his Dad was involved in, plus how he seemed so scared to talk to me. Although, I kept out that he thinks he’s responsible for his father’s death.. “I guess he has some issues.”
“Who hasn’t?” George scoffed.
I nudged him hard on the shoulder. “Not the point, dick.”
“Okay, okay.” He held up his hands in surrender. “It’s horrible that he went through that and I honestly think the best person for him to talk to is you. You are going to talk to him about what you went through/are going through, right?”
“I’d be hypocritical if I didn’t. We both have scars and stories to tell George, I’m just afraid he won’t accept mine as I have done his. Even with his burns, he’s still perfect to me, he’s kind, funny and enthusiastic about his job and I can tell he loves his family. I want to be able to open up with him, expect when I try, I feel like I’m going to vomit. GOD! Why am I like this? We haven’t even had s*x yet and I doubt he’ll want to with our clothes on. Eventually I’ll have to be naked with him but what if it happens again? What if he can’t…” I closed my eyes and took a deep breath.
“Hey. Don’t. From what I saw when you guys came in here and he couldn’t take his eyes off you or his hands for that matter. That doesn’t look like a man who doesn’t find you attractive.”
“Really?” I smile.
“GIIIIIIRL! YES! He’s not like that douche before. Don’t let one guy spoil it for the others. Do you think Sam is like that?”
“No.” I responded straight away.
“Good. You have your answer then. Be brave. We both will. We deserve it.” He got up from the couch and kissed the top of my head, “I’m off to bed, I’ll see you tomorrow Precious.” And with that I followed and went into my own bedroom and dreamt of chocolate eyes and roaming hands.
Sam: I think I’m turning into a cheesecake. I can’t stop eating yours.
Skylar: HA! Please don’t tell me you’ve finished it already?
Sam: There’s a piece for Willy, don’t you worry. Seth tried a piece this morning and the jerk took most of it to bring home.
I laughed down at my phone.
Skylar: If you’re good, I’ll make you some more.
Sam: Damn, marry me?
Skylar: You should marry my Grammy, she’s the one who taught me how to bake.
Sam: Is she single?
Skylar: In your dreams Romeo, She’s too good for you.
Sam: If she’s anything like her grand-daughter, of course she is.
Skylar: I think it’s the other way around, but points for flattery.
Sam: We’ll agree to disagree Sunshine. We’re boarding now. I’ll text you later if you’re not asleep yet. Get home safe x
Skylar: Have a safe flight. x
I turned my phone off and concentrated at the task at hand. It was 8pm on a Tuesday evening and I was currently finishing sketching out on the walls in the halls. Sam and Seth decided to fly out tonight, so they could get as much done in the meetings for the next 3 days. I needed a distraction so decided to spend time here at the hospital.
I wanted the hall to be ocean themed, with old fashioned treasure maps, colourful animals around different climates and ocean plants. I loved working with watercolour and that was my main design for it all. The game/sitting room for the patience’s would be filled with land and sky animals, with a similar concept, maps showing where they’re from, facts and information about plants and mythical beings. I wanted the walls to always have something new that the children find when they’re here. I also wanted to added texture so they could “feel” the scales, fur and other materials, but I was still working out the health safety aspect of that. Some parts were stressful, making sure I had the correct materials sometimes my drawings wouldn’t go to plan, but I enjoyed being here, I was content to just draw all day if I could. I bent down to pick up my eraser when I jumped ten feet into the air after seeing a man standing at the entry way of one of the rooms, staring at me.
“May I help you?” I asked him.
“I’m looking for Sam Anderson. Know where he is?”
“He’s not here.” Looking at the man gave me instant goosebumps, the bad kind. he was a few inches taller than me, skinny looking with long legs and arms. Fiery looking hair like a fox and eyes like one too, bluer than the sky and cold looking.
“Clearly.” His eyes piercing into mine. “What are you doing?”
“I’m the designer for the walls here at the hospital. I’m finishing up on sketching the designs.” Pointing at the wall to emphasise my point. He walked over and looked at the wall, his hands in his pockets, his back rigid straight, almost robot like. I gulped and shuffled to the right, away from him. After studying the wall a bit longer, he turned his eyes to me, stared some more and smirked. His eyes wandered from my head to my toes, eyeing me like his last meal.
“Thomas. Thomas Fisher.” He held his hand out.
“Hi. Skylar.” I shook his hand quickly and got back to drawing on the wall. I could feel Thomas behind me and I swear I can feel his breath down my neck. This guy is giving me the serious creeps. “Sam will be back in a few days. He’s gone away on business.”
He eyed me up and I realised I said Sam instead of Mr Anderson. I never spoke to Sam on what to tell people about us. I didn’t want to sound unprofessional, or to have to explain to others my relationship with him. “I’ll come back another time then. When did you start working here?”
Oh lord, please leave I thought to myself. “A few weeks ago. Mr Anderson hired me to design the walls of this unit.” He came up beside and the sudden movement caused me to almost trip over, until he grabbed my arms.
“Easy. Can’t have you breaking an arm. What’s your plans for the rooms?”
“Thanks.” I pulled my arm from his hand and returned my things to my bag, preparing to leave. I couldn’t be around this guy anymore. I explained a little about my ideas, not really giving much detail. When I stood up, I flinched when Thomas moved his hand towards my shoulder, lightly brushing something aside.
“You had something on your shoulder. Please don’t leave on my account.”
“I was going anyway. The building usually closes around nine.”
He nodded “I’ll walk out with you.”
After making sure I had all my things, I walked to the elevator, Thomas close behind me.
When we go in and the doors closed, the silence between us was awkward, I hate situations like this, especially when I could feel the eyes of another person on me and only me. Luckily the elevator was large enough to put some distance between us. When the door opened on the ground floor, I shot out of the elevator as fast as I could, making the pavement outside my goal. I didn’t want to seem rude, but I needed air and space, fast. Once outside I turned to Thomas, who wasn’t that far away from me, I didn’t even hear him come after me.
“It was nice to meet you Thomas.” I lied. Giving him a tight smile.
“And it was really lovely to meet you too, Skylar. Hopefully we’ll meet again. ”
Yeah…NOT! But I nodded anyway and was just about to turn towards the underground when I heard my name from a few metres away. Willy was there, standing next to a familiar car, wearing an unfamiliar frown. I was so happy to him I could cry. I turned back to Thomas, “That’s my ride. Goodbye.” I spun around and headed to the car before his reply, Willy opened my door and we were pulling away into traffic within 10 seconds.
“Thank you, Willy. You have no idea how happy I am to see you. I didn’t know you were going to be here.”
“You’re welcome Miss Skylar, Mr Anderson wanted to make sure you got home alright, he said you would be here this late and I was all too happy to make sure you were safe.”
“It’s kind of you, I appreciate it.”
He nodded, “I see you met Mr Fisher. Did he go into the building?”
Willy’s voice sounded odd, a mixture of apprehension and anger. “Yeah, he was looking for Sam. I told him he was away and we spoke for a bit…” I looked out of the window, watching the city move. “Do you know him?”
“I’ve met him a handful of times. He’s been friends with Mr Anderson for years now, since they were teenagers.”
I nodded at him and bit my lip, unsure if I should voice my opinion of him so early on. If Sam and Thomas have been friends for a long time, I wasn’t going to come between that. I had no right, even if he gave me the heebie jeebies. Wanting to change the topic I asked Willy about the slice of cheesecake Sam gave him.
He beamed at me, a genuine and kind smile “It was delicious Miss Skylar. Thank you giving me a piece. Anymore treats you bake, I’ll be more than happy to eat them.
I giggled, “You’ll be at the top of my list.”
After getting home and talking to George for a bit, I crashed into bed ready for the next few days to be over so I could see Sam again. Only eighty something hours left.
Sam’s (P.O.V.)
After texting Skylar, Seth and I boarded the private jet the company owned, and we took our seats opposite each other. Amy the air hostess came around to offer us drinks and snacks before preparing the plane. I took my laptop out, looking at new emails and re checking our schedule for the next 3 days.
“The Matthews meeting is at noon tomorrow at the Bridge Burn Hotel. I think they’ll want to show us the new site for the other hotel too. Have you brought the marketing proposal for the Johnson company?” I asked Seth.
“You know I do. You’re making it out like we haven’t done this before.”
“I’m just double checking.” I sighed loudly.
“What was that sigh for? We haven’t even taken off yet.”
“It’s nothing.”
“That’s a lie. I think that nothing is a something and that something is a short brunette woman, with a wicked sense of humour and a sexy smile.”
“If you weren’t gay, I’d be worried but… yes. I just don’t want to leave her right now, that’s all.” I hate that I had to go on this trip. I used to love getting away for a while, I loved the meetings and enjoyed the discussions with other companies about planning the builds and designs. I still enjoy it, I just wish I didn’t have to be away from Sky to do it, maybe next time she could come with me. Jesus what was wrong with me.
Seth Whistled low, “You’ve got it bad.” I gave him a hard look. “I’m just saying, you’ve only been with her for a couple of weeks. You haven’t had a girlfriend in forever, and now you miss her and it’s only been a day since you last saw her. You like her?”
“You really have to ask me that?”
“Yes. Now answer the question.” The overhead speaker came on and pilot announced we were preparing for take-off. After putting away our equipment and buckling our seatbelts I answered Seth.
“Yes, of course I like her. She’s great Seth, like too good for me. I’m starting to get to know her really well. She sees the world differently and I haven’t laughed so much in the last ten years than I have in the last two weeks with her.”
“I know, I noticed. So has Mum and Grace. They’ve asked about her.”
I shrugged, “She’s my girlfriend. A girl I’m getting to know and she’s getting to know me.”
“Have you…” I threw a plastic cup at him. “NOT THAT! Jesus, please for future reference keep that information to yourself. I mean have you told her about the accident? About your scars?”
I looked out the window, thinking back to Monday night at my apartment. I loved the feel of her hands on me, it was like nothing I’ve felt before. I told Seth about showing my scars to her and about chickening out over telling her about the accident. Seth was aware of my issues with my scars but I kept the killing my dad thoughts to myself. My family would just keep telling me it wasn’t my fault and that I should move on.
Seth smiled at me and nodded his head in a silent agreement. “I think she’s cool. She’s not one of those bone headed women you screw around with.”
“She isn’t. She’s a hundred times better than them. She’s not even in the same category, I never wanted a relationship before her.”
“And you do now? With Skylar?” I nodded at him, “Then talk to her, tell her what happened, what’s happening with you now. Move on with her. I know you said you think she has some issues too, maybe that’ll help with her opening up. Just take it slow man, be there for each other.”
“I just don’t want to f**k it up.” I confessed.
“If you do, Mum will have your nuts.” We both chuckled. “The only way you’ll ruin what you have with Skylar is by not being honest with her. I glad you’re happy, if it’s because of her, then she’s a keeper.”
“So you and George huh?” I pushed. Seth rarely spoke about his relationships, not to me anyway. Grace, our sister is more open with that topic with him but I also cared if my brother was happy or not.
“Yes.” He sat back and opened up a newspaper.
“That’s it? That’s all you’re gonna say?”
“Want me to give you all the details?” He smirked.
“Do you want my ears to bleed? I just want to know if you’re happy.”
He sighed and looked at me. “I am. It’s fun with George, we’re just taking things slow. We’re not putting a label on it.”
I know he was acting too cool about his “relationship”, but I played along. “Okay. As long as you’re happy. But if you hurt my girlfriends best friend, be prepared for her wrath.” I opened up my own newspaper, looking at my watch to check the time. Only eight or so hours until I got to see my angel.
