Larnaca, CyprusT he MNIE Chief of Mission blinked in the bright noontime sunlight and spotted Chan Davis sitting alone, toying with a gyro sandwich at the little picnic table outside their building. A friendly local hoping for a contract with a new business in Larnaca installed a nice patio set complete with bright beach umbrella in the courtyard. He was promptly and forcefully escorted off the property by armed guards who ignored his complaints and then scoured the furniture for listening or tracking devices. The Cypriot contractor took the hint and never returned to claim his patio set, so the staff used it on the rare occasions when they could take a lunch outside the building. It was one of Chan’s favorite places to hide and think outside the turmoil. “You can unpack.” Rich Groscost
