CHAPTER TWENTY-THREELost in darkness and cold, Charouth clung to the vision of wings. She hoped they would carry her to a place of light and warmth. Or at least take her to whatever awaited an angel after death. She considered the word. What did it mean to an immortal? Did her kind even get an afterlife? At least the pain was gone, replaced by something unrecognizable. It was faint but she knew she had to hang on to it or end up back in screaming darkness. The image wavered and the cold turned brutal, freezing every part of her. Out of a fog she heard voices. An argument.
