Chapter Two

2. “Nothing’s going to happen,” Morgana insisted. “Nothing’s going to happen because… because we’re getting rid of the second one. That baby is the one who was born later, Cedric. She shouldn’t exist. She never should have. I promise you: I’ll act like she was never born. Please… don’t be mad at me. It wasn’t my fault, I swear. I had no signs, there was no way to know… I never imagined something like this would happen.” Her tears fell uncontrollably, sliding down her cheeks to her trembling lips. Her posture was not just one of anguish, but of genuine terror. "Please don't get rid of me because of this," she begged. "I... Cedric, I beg you..." Morgana trembled so much she seemed about to collapse completely. Her fear was neither symbolic nor exaggerated; it was the visceral fear of a woman convinced that her life hung on her partner's reaction. She feared that, because she had given birth to twins, he would end up taking her life without hesitation. Cedric, meanwhile, kept his gaze fixed on the forbidden child. While he pondered, Morgana continued to weep inconsolably on the bed, her face ashen and her hands trembling. The doctor, aware of the danger of the mother becoming agitated in that state, tried to calm her, insisting that she must control her emotions, that her body was still too weak after childbirth. Even so, Morgana's tears did not stop; her fear was stronger than any clinical warning. Finally, Cedric turned to face her. —On second thought, we can take advantage of this instead of killing her. It would be a waste to do so. Morgana opened her eyes wide, startled. "What... what do you mean?" she asked, flustered. "She can't live. We have to get rid of her. I'm not going to raise her... I can't. I don't want to." “No one will know she’s our daughter,” Cedric replied coldly, without batting an eye. “I’ll make sure no one finds out. A bad omen is just a superstition that isn’t entirely based in reality. On the other hand, this pup could be very useful, Morgana.” He paused, putting his thoughts in order. "If the first daughter doesn't work out, the second is a backup. We'll improve the firstborn with the resources this other one can provide. It's simple logic. If the first gets sick and needs organs, the second will give them to her. If the first has trouble conceiving in the future, the second can serve as a surrogate. It will be a puppy mill to guarantee that the heir has offspring without complications. Do you understand? There's a world of possibilities.” Morgana stared at him in astonishment. Twins were forbidden within the Clan, which meant that if they were discovered, the entire family would face punishment. However, all Morgana cared about was surviving. Going against the Beta's wishes was not an option. “Cedric…” she began. “You’re the head of this family, you have the final say. If you decide that’s best, then I won’t object. However, you said no one will know she’s our daughter. So I won’t be the one to raise her. I don’t want to be near that woman. I’ll never see her as my daughter. My only daughter is the one who was born first. The one who came later is just an intruder who barged into my womb without permission. Who contaminated my being, who altered what should be pure and unique.” She put a hand to her chest, as if the very memory of the twin pregnancy made her feel spiritually nauseous. "I must perform a spiritual cleansing," she said with obsessive conviction, "so I don't end up dying, falling into disgrace. So you can do whatever you want with her." "You won't have to raise her. She'll grow up with the servants," Cedric declared. "She'll be one of the slaves who take care of our well-being and comfort. There will be no bond between you." Morgana swallowed hard, now calmer, but a new worry crept into her thoughts. "Cedric... as she grows up... she'll have the same face as our firstborn. They're identical. How will we hide it? How will we keep anyone from noticing? No one could see them together without getting suspicious." Cedric remained silent for a few seconds. To tell the truth, he too had considered switching places with the other whenever he deemed it necessary, but Morgana was right. It was risky for them both to have the same face. "I'll take care of it," he declared. Her eyes then slid towards the doctor's assistant. —You. Take the puppy from the closet and come with me. The assistant handed the firstborn to Morgana and then went to the closet to get the second puppy. Cedric never looked back. He left the room, and the assistant followed silently, carrying the newborn, her cries echoing faintly through the endless hallways of the house. Minutes later, they arrived at Cedric's studio. He closed the door, isolating that space from the rest of the world. Inside, Cedric began to change shape. Its transformation was swift and terrifying. The human figure dissolved to give way to a wolf of colossal dimensions, with gray fur and an overwhelming presence. Cedric, in his wolf form, approached the pup. And at that moment, with his claws, he disfigured his daughter's face. The pup mustn't grow up with the same face as her sister; there mustn't be any resemblance that could betray the truth. That mark would be her condemnation and, at the same time, her hiding place. "Leave her there," Cedric ordered the assistant, to place the pup on a sofa in the study. The pup was crying inconsolably, which worried the young wolf, but she knew there was nothing she could do about it. She barely had time to move away. In an instant impossible to anticipate, Cedric lunged at the assistant and sank his fangs into her neck, killing her instantly. Elsewhere in the house, the doctor finished her work. She had thoroughly cleaned, examined, and checked the firstborn, making sure she was strong and healthy. Finally, she handed her over to Morgana. Shortly afterward, the doctor left the large house, disappearing into the darkness of the night. But it never reached its destination. Along the way, figures slipped through the shadows of the forest. Wolves, obeying a command, attacked and killed her. Her disappearance was total, as if she had never existed. No one else was to know about the second daughter. No one was to live to speak of the forbidden existence of the twin sister.
