Chapter 6

1113 Words
When we pulled into the driveway, James and Chris were outside waiting on us. James was holding Cherry. I opened the car door and got out, closing it behind me. Cherry scrambles out of James arms and runs up to me, jumping up like she has pogo sticks for legs. “Calm down girl,” I laugh as I bend down and let her lick my face. “I was only gone for like an hour.” “Did you too lovebirds have a good date?” James asked, casually shaking his hair out of his eyes. “I don’t kiss and tell boys, but I can’t speak for the lady here.” Derrek shot me a sly grin as he closed the car door. I glared at Derrek, “As far as I am aware, you don’t kiss period.” Chris chuckled, “There was no way Des was going to kiss you in the hour y’all were gone. I spent basically every waking moment with her for 2 years of school and the closest I ever got was a hug.” “You didn’t seem interested in me Chris, so why would I kiss you? You were more concerned how I was making better grades on the lab reports even though we were partners.” I grinned, “You said you needed my help to figure out who the 4th arranged man for me is?” James gestured toward the house, “Come inside and sit-down Doll.” I followed Chris and James back into the house, and Derrek shut the door behind us. We sat in the same spots from earlier, but I noticed the coffee was all cleaned up. “Did you guys clean up?” “Sure did Des, we handwashed the mugs cause the dishwasher was clean and we didn’t want to mess up your organization in the kitchen.” “Thanks, but that wasn’t necessary.” James cleared his throat, “Yes it was Doll. We interrupted your life, the least we could do was wash a couple of mugs and put them back.” James paused, glanced at Chris, then continued, “Anyway, Chris and I pieced together where you went after graduation. It looks like you moved back here to Idaho Falls and got a job at the Hospital.” I nodded, “Yes. Dad had an old buddy who got me an interview for the Speech Therapy Clinic. I have been working there ever since.” “Okay, so did you live at home with your parents?” Chris asked. “If you lived somewhere else you could have met your Fate then.” “I lived in an apartment, about 10 minutes down the street. I don’t recall anyone really sticking out in my mind. Shouldn’t I have some recollection if I met my Fate?” James nodded, leaning forward. “He should stick out in your mind like we did. After moving back and getting a job, what did you do?” “I dated that guy I mentioned earlier for a few months, then he moved away, got back with his Ex I think. Why are you guys all focused on after I graduated College? Could I have met my last Fate before then? What if my boyfriend in High School was another one of my Fates?” James snorted, “Trust me Doll. He was definitely not one of your Fates.” I glared at James, “How do you know?” “Because he was a worthless piece of trash who, other than stealing your first kiss, didn’t care about you at all. He was cheating on you when you finally broke up with him.” James retorted, angrily. Woah there, he got upset quick about Dwayne. What did he mean he stole my first kiss? “What do you mean he stole my first kiss?” I asked, confused. I glance at Chris and Derrek, who are having completely different reactions to this story. Chris is looking super uncomfortable, while Derrek just needs a bowl of popcorn; acting like this is the best show he has ever seen. James rolled his eyes, “You don’t have to lie about never being kissed anymore Doll. Josh said he saw you making out with Dwayne in the school lobby right before Prom Junior Year.” “I never kissed Dwayne! I have never kissed anyone, not that it is any of your business. I was late showing up to Prom because Dwayne forgot to come get me. I didn’t show up until right before they crowned the King and Queen. Whoever he was making out with was not me.” Chris clears his throat, “Okay, let’s all take a deep breath. Destiny, your High School boyfriend was not one of your Fates because James was your Fate assigned for High School. This 4th Fate must be someone since me.” I look at Chris, “Okay. Let me think.” After a moment I straighten up. “Mom tried to set me up with the son of one of her friends, but he never came to the blind date. Other than that, I basically worked, got Cherry as a gift for my birthday last year, and then after the funeral I moved back in here.” Chris glanced at Derrek and James. “You were set up on a blind date and he never showed?” I nodded, “Yes, mom was really upset about it too. Apparently when she told him about me, he seemed super interested, but I guess he wasn’t. I sat at the restaurant from 6 till it closed and he never showed. When I told mom she said she would ask her friend, and then never mentioned it again.” They all looked at each other, and then back at me. “What?” I asked. “Love, we are pretty sure this mystery guy you never met was your last Fate. Do you remember his name?” “Um, let me think.” What was his name? Of course now my mind decides to go blank. Come on Destiny, think! “I think the last name was Finley, but I can’t remember his first name.” “Did he live here in town Des?” “Yes, I think he is a dentist or something, maybe a dental hygienist? Mom said that I would never have to worry about dentist appointments if I married this guy.” I looked at the guys, “Does that help?” James nodded, “We might be able to hunt him down with that information.”
