Chapter 16

717 Words
15 minutes later we are all loaded in James’s car. Chris sits behind me with the map, and Derrek sits on his left trying to organize the papers to the order of houses on our path. James plugs in the first address to his phone and slowly backs out of my driveway. This is crazy right? I am sitting in the front seat of a car with three of my Fates, on a door-knocking expedition to find my 4th Fate. I have gone completely crazy. I carefully hold onto the brochures in my lap. “Okay, the first house belongs to Kody Vine.” Derrek says. “Kody Vine.” I repeat, taking a deep breath. You got this Destiny. Either he is your Fate, or he is just a random person that you will never, hopefully, see again. “Okay, Rock-Paper-Scissors to see who goes with Des to the door?” Chris asks. James and Derrek nod. “Seems fair to me,” James says. He slowly pulls the car over and parks it in the street in front of the house. He unbuckles and twists around to face the other guys. “You call it Doll.” “Okay, ready?” I ask. They all nod. “Rock-Paper-Scissors Shoot!” James and Chris pick scissors, and Derrek goes with Rock. Derrek laughs, “Okay. You too losers can figure out who goes next time with Destiny.” He opens the car door and climbs out. I mimic his movements. Derrek shuts his car door and walks around to my door. “You okay Love?” I nod, shutting the car door. “Perfectly fine.” I say, closing my door. I fall into step beside Derrek as we head to the front door. “Here goes nothing,” I mutter as I knock. The door opens and a little girl, maybe 6, is standing there. She has the end of one of her blonde braids in her mouth. “High sweetheart.” I say, “We are looking for Kody Vines, is he here?” She nods. “Could you go get him for us? We would like to talk to him.” She nods again, then disappears into the house. A few moments later she returns, holding onto the hand of a man, who looks extremely tired. “Hello, my name is Derrek, and this is Destiny. We came to talk to you to see if you would be willing to support the Special Olympics and donate to the clinic that Destiny here works at.” Derrek says. I hand Kody a brochure, and size him up. I feel nothing. Should I feel like immensely attracted to him? Kody reaches out and takes the brochure. “I will have to talk to my wife about it, but we might be interested in supporting.” “The email and number there are specific to the fundraising effort if you would like to donate.” I say, shooting a quick glance at Derrek. “Thank you for your time.” “You guys be careful and have a good day,” Kody says before closing the door. Derrek and I turn around and walk back to the car. “Well?” James asks as Derrek, and I climb back in the car. I shake my head, “Nothing. Who is next on the list Chris?” “Logan Matthews, he lives just around the corner.” “Okay, who gets to go with me next time?” “That would be me Doll,” James says as he starts the car up. I nod, “Derrek had this cool speech all prepared for when he came to the door. Maybe you guys should use the same one that way I can assess each guy.” Chris and James nod, “Sounds like a plan Des.” “Okay, here is the speech. ‘Hi, my name is ___ and this is Destiny. We came to talk to you to see if you would be willing to support the Special Olympics and donate to the clinic that Destiny here works at.’ And then Destiny hands them a brochure.” “One down, 17 to go,” I say as James parks the car outside of Logan’s house.
