Chapter 4: How Did They Get Involved?

1352 Words
“What’s the relationship?” Most likely siblings—but was that something that needed to be shared with an outsider? Xie Yiye crossed his arms and smirked, watching Gu Jinmo and Su Qianqian like he was enjoying a show. “Didn’t you already divorce your wife, Young Master Gu? Why are you still so concerned with her personal life?” “I always thought your girlfriend was Miss Su. Turns out there’s one outside and one inside. When it comes to being a player, I really have to admit defeat to you, Young Master Gu.” No wonder she’d brought the divorce agreement to a bar. With a husband this unfaithful, anyone would’ve had enough. Gu Jinmo had better hope Wen Yan wasn’t his sister—otherwise, the entire Xie family would come after him for payback. Xie Yiye never directly answered his question. This time, Gu Jinmo didn’t stop him. Even Su Qianqian, usually quick to act, couldn’t help but feel uneasy. “Brother Mo, I’ve never seen Xie Yiye help a woman like this before.” Su Qianqian was flustered and aggrieved. Why would Xie Yiye defend Wen Yan? How had they gotten involved, and why hadn’t there been any rumors? Gu Jinmo’s lips were tightly pressed, his eyes filled with cold suspicion. The seed of doubt had been planted—just waiting to take root and grow. After leaving the bar, Wen Yan returned to the house her grandmother had lived in. Before she passed, her grandmother had told her she hoped she’d one day find her real family. Even if her parents weren’t good people, maybe she had siblings who could care for her. Her grandmother had no children of her own. All her hopes had been pinned on Wen Yan. She’d raised her through frugal means, and before she could enjoy life, she passed away. “Grandma, I will avenge you.” Even if Su Qianqian was as mighty as a towering tree, Wen Yan would still try to shake it down. She searched all night but couldn’t find the box her grandmother had mentioned—the one containing clues to her background. The next morning, Gu Jinmo called. “Where are you?” “Do you need something?” Her voice was colder than ever. “Come home. I need to talk to you.” “That’s not my home anymore,” she replied, glancing out the darkening window. Her voice grew hoarse. “Whatever it is, say it over the phone.” “When did you meet Xie Yiye?” He got straight to the point. “Did you divorce me to be with him?” Xie Yiye? The name sounded familiar. Wen Yan suddenly remembered—he was the third young master of the Xie family. She didn’t understand how Gu Jinmo had come to such a ridiculous conclusion. But since the divorce agreement was already signed, she didn’t feel the need to explain anything further. “Gu Jinmo, we’ve signed the divorce papers. I’d appreciate it if you stayed out of my business.” “Yes, we signed. But the divorce isn’t finalized yet,” his voice was icy. “Didn’t you say Su Qianqian harmed your grandmother? I’ve brought the nurse here.” The nurse was at the Gu residence? Wen Yan’s hand trembled as she held the phone. She hadn’t been able to reach the nurse since that day. She never imagined Gu Jinmo would find her. “Fine. I’ll come right over.” He wanted the truth? She’d give it to him. When Wen Yan arrived at the Gu residence, she didn’t see the nurse—but she did see Su Qianqian enjoying breakfast at the dining table. Su Qianqian was eating gracefully, while Auntie Zhang busied herself serving her. To someone who didn’t know better, it would look like Su Qianqian was the lady of the house. Wen Yan’s eyes fell on the seat Su Qianqian occupied. It had always been hers—near the window, with good lighting and a perfect view of the lake. Now it had been taken. “Madam…” Auntie Zhang’s face looked awkward when she saw her. “Oh, you’re here?” Su Qianqian smiled innocently. “Sorry, I didn’t prepare breakfast for you. You don’t mind, right?” Wen Yan noticed that all the food on the table was light and clearly made to suit Su Qianqian’s taste. Opportunism was a basic human instinct—especially for someone drawing a paycheck from the Gu family. Wen Yan gave a smile that didn’t reach her eyes. “Miss Su is a guest. It’s only natural for Auntie Zhang to treat her well.” The word “guest” was both sarcasm and a reminder. But Su Qianqian didn’t mind. She giggled and said, “I may be a guest now, but soon I’ll be the hostess.” “That depends on whether I’m willing to divorce. If I’m not, you’ll never become the hostess.” Wen Yan realized this might actually be a good strategy. If she divorced quickly, she’d be doing those two a favor. If her grandmother hadn’t died, she would’ve stepped aside. But now that Su Qianqian had caused her grandmother’s death, staying married could be a form of revenge. Sure enough, Su Qianqian’s expression changed instantly. “What are you trying to do?” “I just think letting you be a mistress forever sounds pretty great.” If she stayed a mistress, all of Su Qianqian’s efforts would’ve been for nothing. Su Qianqian couldn’t allow that. “If it weren’t for Brother Mo, you wouldn’t even have the right to talk to me in this house,” she snapped, hand itching with frustration. Gu Jinmo had warned her that Wen Yan had been his wife for years. Even if there was no love, she had endured a lot and shouldn’t be treated too harshly. But if she was pushed too far, Su Qianqian could do anything. “You’re pathetic. Brother Mo doesn’t even love you anymore, and you’re still clinging on,” Su Qianqian hissed, every word stabbing like a knife. Wen Yan didn’t argue. Love or not—Gu Jinmo had never loved her from the start. “Miss Su, the shameless one here is the woman who intrudes on someone else’s marriage.” “You’re lying!” Su Qianqian screamed and lunged, trying to scratch her face. Wen Yan dodged quickly. Su Qianqian lost her balance and fell forward. Right into the fish tank. Crash! Glass shattered everywhere. Time seemed to freeze. Then came a piercing scream that shook the entire villa. Su Qianqian’s hand had a deep gash, and blood gushed out uncontrollably. “My hand! My hand!” Su Qianqian was petrified. She was a jewelry designer—her hands were everything. The Su family even insured them. But now, the horrible wound stretched from the back of her hand to her palm. “Wen Yan, I’ll kill you!” Su Qianqian didn’t even feel pain anymore. She just wanted Wen Yan to suffer. She grabbed a long shard of glass and charged at Wen Yan, aiming to s***h her face. At that moment, a dark figure stepped in front of Wen Yan and grabbed the shard. Blood trickled from his hand along the glass. “Brother Mo!” “Gu Jinmo!” Wen Yan was stunned. Su Qianqian froze. Gu Jinmo’s hand—same spot, same wound. “Why did you protect her?!” Su Qianqian broke down. Gu Jinmo didn’t respond. He glanced at her bleeding hand, then frowned and barked at the hesitant maid: “Go get Dr. Li.” Dr. Li was the Gu family’s private physician and lived nearby. Wen Yan rushed over to bring the first-aid kit. She took out the disinfectant and walked toward Gu Jinmo. Su Qianqian, furious, shoved her hard. “Get lost! Because of you, now both Brother Mo and I are hurt!” Wen Yan stood her ground and looked directly at Gu Jinmo. “I didn’t do it on purpose.”
