Chapter 10 Divorce Procedures

“Su Qianqian, if you really want to atone for your sins, then leave this place and let Mom have some peace. She doesn’t want to see you.” “Mo-ge…” Su Qianqian grabbed Gu Jinmo’s hand. “I’m not leaving. I want to stay and take care of Auntie. You know she used to like me a lot. Someone must have spoken badly about me to her…” “Leave, Qianqian.” Su Qianqian froze, as if she couldn’t believe her ears. “I’m tired.” Looking at the weary expression on the man’s face, it felt like a bucket of cold water had been dumped over her. She never expected Gu Jinmo would really tell her to leave. Su Qianqian’s face turned pale, and she nearly lost her balance. After a long pause, she said slowly, “Then I’ll wait for you outside.” She gave Wen Yan a vicious glare and quickly ran out. Only Wen Yan and Gu Jinmo were left in the long corridor. Wen Yan looked at the emergency room door, her chest tight with unease. She turned to Gu Jinmo. “Let’s go ahead and complete the divorce procedures.” Since everything had already been laid out with her mother-in-law, it was time to finalize the divorce. Gu Jinmo wanted to ask about her and Xie Yiye, but the words circled on his tongue and, in the end, he only said one word: “Okay.” Wen Yan looked at the man she had loved for so many years, and a bitter taste rose in her mouth. She and he had finally come to this. To uncover the truth behind her grandmother’s death, she had to let go of Gu Jinmo. The emergency room doors opened. The doctor came out, removed his mask, and had a serious expression. “The patient mainly suffered a head injury, resulting in a mild concussion.” Wen Yan breathed a sigh of relief. It was only a mild concussion—thank goodness. “But…” The doctor paused. “During the rescue, we discovered signs of organ lesions. We recommend further testing to confirm the condition.” Organ lesions! Wen Yan’s legs nearly gave out. Her grandmother had also been diagnosed with organ lesions—later confirmed to be late-stage cancer. She had been married to Gu Jinmo for three years, and it was her mother-in-law who stood by her through the toughest times. More than just a senior family member, she had been a mentor and a friend, filling in the missing pieces of familial love in Wen Yan’s life. Illness that affects internal organs is never minor. A deep sorrow surged in Wen Yan’s heart. Seeing the forced smile on the doctor’s face, Gu Jinmo also felt an ominous premonition. “Please conduct a full examination. What else should we do?” “Spend more time with the patient. Keep talking to her. There may be side effects from the concussion.” After the doctor left, Wen Yan looked at Gu Jinmo and noticed a rare trace of despair on his handsome face. His brother was gone. His father too. And now, his mother was seriously ill. Wen Yan realized that this glamorous young master was actually just like her—lonely and bereft of family. Seeing his pain, Wen Yan said calmly, “The results aren’t out yet. Maybe things aren’t as bad as they seem.” Gu Jinmo looked at her for a long time, then pressed his lips into a thin line and nodded. The nurse transferred the unconscious Zhang Lan into a regular ward. Just as Gu Jinmo and Wen Yan were about to walk over, Su Qianqian, who had been waiting, ran over. “I saw Auntie was moved to a regular ward. She’s okay, right?” Su Qianqian’s face lit up. “I knew she would be fine. She’s always been lucky.” Her cheerful tone sounded awkward in the quiet atmosphere. Seeing the lack of joy on Gu Jinmo and Wen Yan’s faces, Su Qianqian choked on her next words. “Wh-what’s wrong?” “You should go home first,” Gu Jinmo finally spoke. Still asking her to leave. The flame in Su Qianqian’s heart was immediately doused. She clenched her jaw and nodded. “Okay.” In the past, she would’ve asked “why,” but with Wen Yan here, she was afraid of pushing Gu Jinmo toward someone else. She could only nod obediently, pretending not to know anything. “Then I’ll go. Mo-ge, don’t overwork yourself. Take care.” Tears welled in Su Qianqian’s eyes as she turned and left. After she was gone, Wen Yan said, “I want to stay and take care of Mom at the hospital.” Gu Jinmo saw the determination in her eyes. The refusal he wanted to voice never came out. “Okay.” His voice was low and hoarse, rich with emotion. “Thank you.” “No need to thank me. I’m doing it willingly. After all, Mom has always treated me well.” She suddenly remembered something and added quickly, “Don’t worry, I won’t say anything to her about our divorce. Just remember to be at the Civil Affairs Bureau at ten the day after tomorrow.” Her tone was casual, and her smile sweet. Seeing how easily she could talk about the divorce, Gu Jinmo’s expression darkened. Was she really that eager to divorce him? Every time she calmly brought up the topic, his mood would plummet. Wen Yan didn’t look at his expression. She turned and walked into the ward. Some things needed to be said eventually. Perhaps it would be more dignified if she were the one to bring it up. He had once given her warmth and pulled her out of the abyss, but for her grandmother’s sake, she had to sever all emotional ties. … Zhang Lan slept for a whole day and night. Wen Yan stayed by her side the whole time. Sunlight streamed in, casting a soft glow on Wen Yan’s eyelids. Suddenly, Zhang Lan stirred, and Wen Yan quickly lifted her head. “Mom, you’re awake?” “What did you just call me?” Zhang Lan’s face stiffened. “Who are you? I don’t remember having a daughter this old.” Zhang Lan looked extremely displeased. “Where’s my son?” She craned her neck, peering toward the door. Seeing her reaction, Wen Yan’s heart sank. Something was wrong with her mother-in-law! Someone was standing outside the door. Seeing Zhang Lan stretch her neck, the figure quietly entered. It was Su Qianqian. No one knew how long she had been waiting outside. “A-auntie…” Su Qianqian walked in timidly. Though Zhang Lan had never liked her, she still wanted to come in and apologize. Even if Zhang Lan continued to hate her, she needed to appear kind in front of Gu Jinmo. Zhang Lan stared at her without moving. Su Qianqian’s heart raced. She was afraid Zhang Lan would kick her out again. But to her surprise, Zhang Lan actually waved her over. “It’s you. Come, let me take a good look at you.” Su Qianqian froze. Although she found Zhang Lan’s attitude strange, she still walked over nervously. Wen Yan frowned. Zhang Lan looked at her and said coldly, “You, get out.” This sudden change in attitude made Su Qianqian smirk. Zhang Lan was quite something. Did hitting her head turn her brain to mush? She was kicking her beloved daughter-in-law out. Su Qianqian rolled her eyes at Wen Yan, smug and playful. “Didn’t you hear Auntie? She told you to leave.”
