Chapter 14 - Back at the pris.. Palace

2737 Words
Elvira Pov We entered the palace after a drive in silence. I had no idea what I could say in this question but it seemed like Sam was determined to go back as fast as possible. He even slipped through a curve in the road when we entered the main road outside the forest. I didn’t say anything but I was thinking of a way to make this less bad for him. I knew Valentino already disliked me and a bit more of that was something I could handle. ‘’Sam?’’ I asked after a while. ‘’Yes?’’ he responded, though he kept his eyes on the road. ‘’I’ll take the blame’’ I said but he suddenly shook his head. ‘’No, it is important that he learns that you are trustworthy and that you are not the way he thinks you are’’ Sam said but I had made up my mind. ‘’But I can handle a bit more dislike or hate towards me.. You have your job on the line and you have to take care of your brother’’ I said. ‘’And you for not only your coven but all the covens in Italy’’ Sam said. There was no discussing this with him, I knew that now. I sighed and turned my head away. ‘’Stubborn men’’ I mumbled and I heard a chuckle. ‘’I can say the same for you’’ he responded. The rest of the drive we both were quiet and I didn’t like that. I was still not planning on leaving him hanging for something he did not do on his own. I had accepted his help and now he was going to accept mine even if he didn’t like it. Sam drove up to the gate of the palace and it opened even before he had put his window down to hit the button of the little buzzer in front of it. ‘’He is waiting for us’’ Sam said and I slowly nodded. ‘’I am still not okay with you taking the blame’’ I said and he chuckled. ‘’I know.. But what is your plan then? You don’t have your wand’’ he said. ‘’A potion’’ I simply stated and smiled. ‘’You gave me a potion and I obeyed you?’’ he asked. He seemed to wonder if that would work but even if I knew Valentino only a bit, there was a big chance he didn't even know how witchcraft really worked even though he hates it. ‘’Yes’’ I said and he slowly nodded. He didn'tseem fully sure about the idea yet but that was alright. ‘’It could work.. But let me first try okay?’’ he asked. ‘’I can live with that’’ I said and he nodded. Sam parked the car and got out, I opened my own door and let myself out of the car. After closing the door, I looked at the palace. My personal very fancy prison. The door opened and I saw Valentino walk out, the look on his face was beyond just angry. He seemed furious. ‘’Where have you two been?’’ he asked. He had to talk quite loud because he stood at the front door and we were still standing at the beginning of the stairs. ‘’Valentino.. Let me explain’’ Sam started but Valentino shook his head. He was not gonna let him speak just yet. ‘’First you two will come inside..’’ he said and walked back inside. I looked at Sam and he motioned for me to go first. ‘’After you, Mistress’’ he said and I rolled my eyes though a slight smile did appear on my lips because it was a little funny. I walked up the stairs and was followed closely by Sam. The moment I set foot in the palace, I could feel the anger from Valentino around me. And he was very angry though there was more than just anger. ‘’How could you?’’ Valentino asked and he wasn’t looking at me. ‘’What do you mean?’’ Sam asked after he had closed the door. ‘’You disobeyed my order... I told you that I was not allowing her to leave the palace’’ Valentino said. ‘’It was a funeral Vale..’’ Sam said. ‘’Do not call me that in front of others’’ Valentino said angry. ‘’Only my friends call me that and you betrayed me’’ he said and I could see that it was hurting Sam to hear that. ‘’I didn’t want to..’’ he said and I had to pitch in. ‘’You know he actually had no free will in this’’ I said quickly, Sam gave me a look but Valentino was now more focused on me. ‘’What do you mean?’’ he spit out. ‘’Well, I bewitched him’’ I said. ‘’You do not have your wand, how did you do that?’’ he asked. He clearly was confused by this new information he had just gotten. ‘’The wand is not the only way to preform magic smarty.. Ever heard of potions?’’ I asked in a sarcastic way and rolled my eyes. I placed a hand on my hip and a smile around my lips to add a bit more to the sarcastic look. ‘’I made a potion, said a few words and now he is under my spell until I tell him otherwise’’ I said. Valentino’s face started to get red from anger and he walked towards me, grabbing me by my clothes. ‘’Undo this spell now’’ he said. ‘’Let go of me..’’ I said but he shook his head. He pulled me closer to him and pulled me a bit from the ground, I could still stand on my toes. ‘’Undo.. The.. Spell..’’ he repeated and had his eyes narrowed. ‘’Or what?’’ I asked and also narrowed my eyes. ‘’I’ll put you in the dungeons’’ Valentino said and I let out a laugh. It wasn't even a fake laugh, this actually was funny because I knew I had him in a corner now. The funniest part is that he didn't even seem to know it yet. ‘’Go ahead, find out what your parents will say to you if you do that’’ I said and I knew with that I had a little leverage on him. Valentino then let go of me and pushed me away. I had not expected the push and almost fell on the ground if Sam had not quickly grabbed me. ‘’Thank you for your service Sam...’’ I said and since Valentino was not watching us, I winked at Sam. Sam smiled and put me back on my feet and shook his head. ‘’Wait.. What has happened?’’ he asked, this made Valentino look behind him. ‘’You betrayed me’’ Valentino said. ‘’I did what? No that can’t be..’’ He said, faking disbelief. Oh he was good! I smiled and walked away, in the direction of the servant chambers. ‘’I am not done with you yet’’ Valentino said and I turned around. ‘’Good for you because I am done with you for now.. I got what I wanted and spend my free day the way I wanted it.. And I was lucky that they could postpone the funeral until this day or else I could not even have said goodbye to my loved ones just because you have a bad opinion about my kind’’ I said and then turned back around to walk away. Leaving both Valentino and Sam alone in the main hall of the palace. I held my head high and walked away with as much dignity as I could, i did not want him to see me break down. He didn't deserve that kind of fun. When I reached my room, I closed the door behind me and sat down against it. I looked in front of me and took a deep breath. All I could do now was hope for the best and that maybe in someway Valentino would not be too mad at me but I kinda knew that was too much to ask for. He had said that Sam had betrayed him and even if it was Sam’s choice, I couldn’t let it happen that he would get fired for my choice to go even if I had the feeling it was a bad choice. How could he even have said no in the first place? Did the prince not have a heart? Did he seriously think I would have settled for not going to the one event that I could use to say properly goodbye from my loved ones? Perhaps it had something to do with the whole reason why he hated witches? Or he just was heartless. I closed my eyes and took a another deep breath to calm my nerves but the idea of not saying goodbye was too big. I had stood on the edge of breaking down from the moment I stepped back into the palace and now I let my tears fall down as much as they wanted. After a wgile, I dont even know how long, I got up from the ground and undressed from my funeral clothes and put on a pair of sweatpants and a simple t-shirt. I sat down on my bed and looked at the small window in my room. The evening was closing in on the day but I lost all my appetite. Would Riella come to get me after what happened? Or would she be mad at me for bringing the men she is in love with in danger of losing his job? I didn’t know and I didn’t know what to think of it. I laid down on my bed and closed my eyes. I wasn’t feeling very sleepy but eventually I did drift away into a sleep because I was woken up after a while by a pair of female hands that shook me. ‘’Wake up Vira’’ Riella said and I opened my eyes a little. ‘’How late is it?’’ I asked and she smiled. I sat up straight on the bed. ‘’It’s almost eight o’clock in the evening.. I missed you at dinner’’ she said. ‘’I wasn’t hungry.. I think the funeral cost me more energy that I thought at first’’ I said and she smiled warmly. Why was she smiling warmly anyway? ‘’Did you hear from Sam?’’ I asked and Riella nodded. ‘’Yeah you showed that prince of ours quite some witch power, I really liked it’’ she said and that confused me. If only she knew how powerless I actually felt. ‘’What do you mean?’’ I asked, I stretched a bit with my arms. ‘’Well, how you told Valentino that you made a potion to make Sam listen to you.. You helped Sam, even if you would get the scolding and yelling’’ Riella said and I shrugged. ‘’What can I say? I couldn’t leave Sam hanging.. He knew what he was doing but I simply couldn’t let him take the blame on him because it was my event to go to’’ I said. Riella suddenly wrapped her arms around me in a surprise hug. ‘’Still I want to thank you for this.. You probably saved his job’’ she said and I patted her back a bit. ‘’I would have done the same for you or anyone else..’’ I said and when she let go she looked at me with a smile. ‘’I got you something..’’ she then said and from the ground she picked up a plastic little bag with some food wrapped in silver foil inside it. ‘’Dinner is served’’ she said and gave me the bag. I opened it and could smell several dishes and smiled. My mouth started to water and suddenly my stomach growled. Riella laughed and so did I. ‘’Thank you’’ I said and opened the first foil and found a piece of quiche. I took a bite and smiled. ‘’Mmmm... This tastes amazing!’’ I said with a big grin. Riella smiled and nodded. ‘’Well I didn’t take it with me from the kitchen here, my mother gave it to me’’ she said and I looked at her a bit surprised. ‘’But shouldn’t you be eating it then?’’ I asked and Riella shook her head. ‘’No, I had my fill when I visited her today and she told me to take some extra’s with me for my friend at the castle’’ Riella explained and I nodded while enjoying the taste of the food. I wouldn’t say that the food of the chef’s here wasn’t good but it was different from a home cooked meal. Especially a one cooked meal by a loving mother. After I had eaten my fill, or at least until I couldn’t anymore, I closed the bag and handed it back to Riella who shook her head. ‘’No no, I gave it to you so it is yours.. I am not taking it back’’ she said and a little grin appeared on her lips. ‘’Besides, didn’t your parents learn you that it is ungrateful to give back food?’’ she asked and I chuckled a bit. ‘’Okay you got me there, sorry’’ I said. She smiled and got up. ‘’I am going back to my room now.. See you tomorrow okay?’’ she asked and I nodded. ‘’See you tomorrow, have a goodnight’’ I said and she nodded. ‘’You too’’ she said and walked out of my room. Because of the few hours of sleep I just had, I was not tired yet. I looked at my little room and sighed. There was not much to do here. Maybe I could go visit the library, a new book to read was always a nice way to pass some time. But then again, was the library still free for me to go to? I didn’t know that but who would be there at this hour? I got up and put on a woolen cardigan over my t-shirt. Not that it was extremely cold in the castle but I liked the soft feeling on my arms. I put on my shoes and headed to the library, when I opened the door I saw I was not the only late time reader. I peeked from my spot at the door and saw that the other person had his eyes closed. Valentino. I took a deep breath and walked inside, closing the door behind me softly in order not to wake him. As I walked on my toes to the other side of the room, I ignored to feeling to check on him and see if he was really asleep. I took a history-based fiction book from the shelf and sat down in one of the large leather lazy chairs on the other side of the room and opened the book. I started to read and quickly found myself in a world of brave medieval knights, beautiful princesses and of course the royal wizard and evil witches. After a while I could feel my eyes getting heavy so I closed my book and got up. I slowly walked back to the door and saw that Valentino was still in the chair, sleeping. I sighed and knew the fire would die out eventually and I did not want him to get a cold. Even if he was a total jerk. I walked to the side of the fire place and opened the large chest. Riella had told me I could find blankets in there so I took one out and placed it over Valentino. In his sleep he started to smile when he felt the soft fabric. ‘’Mmm..’’ he mumbled and I smiled. Sometimes he had his cute moments. I walked away when I heard him turn a little on the chair. ‘’Eve..line Don’t..’’ he mumbled and I frowned. Who was Eveline? Was she the girl that got killed? I had heard about that story but never learned the name of the girl. I shook my head, it was my business to find out because I wanted to know why Valentino hated witches. I walked out of the library, ignoring my curiosity and slowly closed the door behind me and leaving Valentino there.
