Chapter 9 - A new room

Riella and I came to my room just in time. Sam was standing outside of the room together with two other guards. One of the guards had brown hair and the other was a red head.

‘’Ah, there you are’’ Sam said and I looked at him and the other two.

‘’Just in time, you have only three minutes left’’ the red haired guard said but Sam gave him a look.

‘’The prince said ten minutes Gary.. So we give her ten minutes’’ Sam said.

‘’But he said..’’ This Gary protested but he stopped after another narrowed look of Sam.

‘’Yes Sam.. Sorry’’ he said and clearly Sam had some kind of higher rang that this guard would shut up so easily. I was wondering what this was especially because their clothes were exactly the same, not even a extra pin on the chest of Sam showed he had a higher rank. Internally I shook my head because right now was not the time to become overly curious and try to gain answers on what it was with Sam and this other guard.

Riella and I walked into the room, at first I was looking at Riella who suddenly stopped walking. I was confused why she did that until I looked in front of me. There I saw that someone or maybe a few people, had been inside my room already. Almost everything was turned up side down. My plants were out of their pots and laid on the ground, the couch was moved and the pillows laid spread out over the ground, they were even cut open so the feathers inside were now everywhere. The desk was empty though I had not much things in there, only a journal but my books were thrown throughout the room like they were nothing. My bed was a mess and all the clothes I had, the new ones and my old ones, were thrown out of it. The drawers for socks underwear and the special area for shoes were all open and seemed to be empty.

‘’What happened here?’’ I asked.

‘’None of your business.. Witch’’ the brown haired guard said, he had also walked into the room and I frowned.

‘’You tell me right now what happened or...’’ I said but Riella grabbed my arm.

‘’No Vira.. Let’s just do what we were told to do and see later’’ she said but I didn’t listen. I did not listen at all because I had the feeling that something was missing.

‘’No, this was my room and I want to know what happened and why there is such a mess’’ I said and looked at Riella.

‘’We didn’t do anything if you want to know’’ the guard said and I looked at him.

‘’You are lying’’ I said and walked to my closet. I looked at the pile of clothes and did see my underwear scattered around the floor but I didn’t even care about the fact that someone might have seen my underwear. I looked into the drawers and saw that they were empty. Then I sat down on my knees and started to searched through my clothes. When I couldn’t find what I was looking for quite fast, I started to search faster. Throwing clothes over my shoulder onto a huge pile and getting frustrated the moment it would hit my back or would stick to my hand.

‘’Vira?’’ Riella asked, I could hear that she was worried but I was too busy searching to respond to her.

‘’Where is it..’’ I said instead and kept looking around.

‘’What Vira?’’ Riella asked, I was still not able to answer her. I was searching for about five minutes when I was sure that I couldn’t find it.

‘’It’s gone..’’ I said, I sat up and looked at Riella. I saw that she actually had started on packing my things while I was throwing around clothes like a mad women. She had been quite busy with packing my stuff.

‘’What do you miss?’’ she asked, worry was still clear in her tone and I remembered that she had been asking me that several times.

‘’My wand..’’ I said. Something inside me snapped the moment I said that out loud, and a wave of anger came rising up out of nowhere. He must have taken my wand, and that was too much. I didn’t care for a different room or a hundred pots of boiled water over my hands. I wouldn’t even care about it if he treated to kill me a thousand times over! But taking my wand was too much.

I looked at the guard that had entered my room.

‘’Where is Valentino?’’ I asked and he shrugged his shoulders. I knew he had nothing to do with the choice of his employee to take my wand, but right now he did make the good choice by not saying anything. I stormed out of my room and Riella tried to stop me but I was faster. Entering the hallway I looked at Sam.

‘’Where is Valentino?’’ I asked him and he looked at me with mixed feelings I could see but my anger was too high to care at this moment. I stormed past him and walked into the direction of the library. The first maid I saw I looked at.

‘’Valentino’s room?’’ I asked, she saw the anger in my eyes and I could see she was a little scared of me. ‘’End of t-this hall.. a-and then the door on the r-right’’ she said with a little stutter. Even though she was a little scared, I could hear her stutter was not because of this.

‘’Thank you’’ I said after she told me the directions. I went down the hall and turned to the door on my right side, the anger still boiling inside of me. Without knocking on the door I opened them and walked inside.

'’You went to far this time mister Marino!’’ I said and saw him sitting on the couch. His couch had the same size as the one in my room but it was black. Now that I looked at it, his whole room was quite dark.

‘’What do you mean?’’ he asked in a utterly calm way and this made me even more angry.

‘’Oh you know what I mean and I want it back, now’’ I said. I followed him with my eyes as he got up from the couch, I knew he was almost thirty centimeters taller than I was but I didn’t care. I would show him that he had gone too far.

‘’I have no clue what you have lost Vira, please enlighten me and I’ll help you find it back’’ he said. I narrowed my eyes and had enough of his smug face.

I raised my hand and even though I had to get on my toes, I smacked my flat hand right into his face and hit his right cheek. He looked at me and his eyes grew with anger, he picked me up by my shirt and raised me so I could look him right in his eyes. His beautiful chocolate pools but I couldn’t let myself be distracted by the color of them.

‘’That was it you filthy, no good excuse of a witch’’ he said and threw me across the room. He looked at me for a moment while I flew through the sky and crashed against something hard.

The hard thing I crashed into was a table I saw and the fall was hard. I coughed some because the air had been stomped out of my lungs during the crash. I opened my eyes and saw he walked over towards me but in stead of crying, I got up as quickly as I could and crawled away so I got some space.

‘’Give me back my wand’’ I said as I got up and he sneered at me.

‘’Like hell I would give you that back, no more magic use for you’’ he said and this got me the confirmation that he thought I could only use magic with the use of my wand. And I was not going to teach him I could use magic without it. He came walking towards me again and I got picked up by the collar of my shirt. I was dangling in the air with my feet and looked down, into his eyes. They were still beautiful even if they were filled with anger. I didn’t know why I was thinking this but he actually looked quite handsome when he was angry.

‘’I will let you go this time but if you even dare to raise your hand at me, I’ll..’’ he said but stopped half way. ‘’ Kill me?’’ I asked and rolled my eyes at him.

‘’Yeah you are planning to do that anyway’’ I said and then kicked him into his cross. He dropped me on the ground and stood bend over himself. I looked at him from my position across of him and sighed. It had not been my plan to actually get into a fight with him but I had to admit that it was a good way to calm my nerves. My back was hurting quite a bit from the hit against that table but I took the chance that he was busy recovering from the kick, to get up and walk out of his room.

I went back to my old room and saw Riella and Sam there standing, the other guards were gone. I had cooled down a bit but was still breathing a bit hard, had that smack done more than I thought? Probably nothing I couldn’t handle.

‘’Where did you go?’’ Sam asked and was a bit wary.

‘’Me? Oh I went to my lovely fiance’’ I said and chuckled, which was not a good idea and my face was filled with the pain from my back.

‘’What happened there?’’ Sam asked but Riella walked towards my back and without a warning she pulled up my shirt and saw a red line from one side to the other.

‘’No lies Vira..’’ she warned me and I sighed.

‘’I asked for my wand and when he played dumb, I hit him.. Then he pulled me up and threw me against a table, threatened to kill me and then I kicked him in the cross.. So he let me go and I left.. without my wand badly enough but he can have it if he gets lucky from it’’ I said and I looked at Sam and Riella who looked both at me with a very shocked expression on their faces.

‘’Oh I also said he was handsome when he was angry... Is that bad?’’ I asked and Sam shook his head.

‘’Oh dear Godde... God... You really have a death wish don’t you?’’ he asked and quickly left. I did notice that slip in his words, he wanted to say something else that God and I believe I even know what but I wasn’t going to go into that right now.

‘’Riella, please show her her new room.. And explain the things I told you okay?’’ he asked before going around the corner.

‘’Aye Aye Captain’’ Riella said and I saw Sam couldn’t hide a smile. They would be such a cute couple, I was wondering when they would get the courage to tell each other they liked each other.

‘’So, go ahead, explain what Sam explained’’ I said after a moment and Riella picked up a bag and handed it to me.

‘’Well, it’s simple.. From now on you actually are a maid here’’ She said blandly.

‘’Hmm, maybe striking my employer wasn’t such a good idea then..’’ I said and she sighed.

‘’Of course that was not a good idea! And here I thought you were the smarter one of the two’’ Riella said and looked at me slightly annoyed.

‘’Well he kind of asked for it by taking something that wasn’t his to take’’ I said. Riella walked towards the quarters of the maids that were connected to the palace.

‘’Well that might be so but you did not make it easy for him to give it back... Did you listen to him when you asked about your wand?’’ Riella asked.

‘’No because it is quite clear that he took it and he just played dumb’’ I said.

‘’And what if someone else had taken it and you just accused him of something he didn’t do?’’ Riella asked and I looked at her.

‘’Are you defending him?’’ I asked a bit surprised.

‘’No I am not, what I am doing is talking some sense into you’’ She said and I nodded.

‘’Well maybe.. Just maybe you are right’’ I said.

We walked towards the end of the hall and there was a door that stood a little open.

‘’Here it is’’ Riella said. I pushed the door further open and saw a small room with a bed and a few shelves that I could probably use for my clothes. There was a small window that gave a little bit of day light and a normal lamp hanging from the ceiling.

‘’This is so much different’’ I said.

‘’Yeah I thought you would say that.. I did try to safe a few of your plants so I hope I did well’’ she said and I smiled.

‘’Thank you so much’’ I said.

‘’They work here with a grading system.. So the better you work, the faster you get a better room’’ Riella explained and I smiled.

‘’I don’t think I will fall under that system’’ I said and she shrugged.

‘’Maybe you will’’ Riella said.

‘’Maybe I did but I don’t think that after our fight I’ll get any chance to move up’’ I said and walked to the bed. I sat down and put my bag on the ground.

‘’Riella?!’’ A female voice suddenly sounded from the hallway.

‘’Yes Ma’am Oberman!’’ Riella quickly said and walked out of the room.

‘’What were you doing there?’’ Madam Oberman said, she had a stern and loud voice. I had not met her yet but I had the feeling that she was not going to like me.

‘’I showed Vira her room’’ Riella explained.

‘’Vira?’’ she asked and I got up.

‘’That will be me’’ I said as I walked out of the room.

‘’Ah, the new recruit.. You must be very happy because you are the only witch allowed to work here.. But don’t think your magic will help you with the chores’’ She said.

‘’I won’t use magic Ma’am.. Also because I can’t since my wand is missing’’ I said and she nodded. I didn’t believe she would believe my lie but I was glad she did.

‘’Good.. Now go grab your uniforms.. Riella show her the way and then get to the dining hall to clean it up’’ she said and Riella nodded.

‘’Yes Ma’am’’ She said and she pulled me with her to where I could get myself a uniform.

‘’Never ever use magic in front of her.. Because she hates witches just as much Valentino does’’ Riella whispered and I nodded.

‘’Oh.. Witch?’’ Ma’am Oberman said before we could get away.

‘’Yes?’’ I asked and turned around.

‘’Report to me once you are dressed, because you have a different job’’ she said and I nodded.

Riella and I quickly went our way after that and she showed me where I could get my uniform.

‘’Every Thursday you can bring the dirty ones here and get new ones.. Always check your size because once you accepted them, you are stuck with them for a week’’ Riella explained as I got my uniform and checked the size. We walked back towards my room and I looked at her.

‘’I can’t believe the king and queen are that stern on things like this’’ I said out loud.

‘’Oh they are not.. They actually don’t know this is how it goes.. Oberman was hired by Valentino half a year ago, before that it was much better’’ Riella said honestly and I nodded.

‘’Good to know’’ I said and she gave me a careful hug.

‘’I’ll see you later, I got a dining hall to clean’’ Riella said and I walked back to my room where I put on the uniform. The uniform consisted of a dark blue skirt on knee length, a white blouse and a apron. I folded the upper part of the apron down and bound it around my waist only because I didn’t like it when a apron was also on the upper part of my body.

After getting dressed and putting my hair in a ponytail, I walked out of my room and closed the door. I looked around and went on a search for Ma’am Oberman. After a little walk, I found her in the main hall with a large bucket of water and soap next to her.

‘’Here I am’’ I said with a smile which quickly faded when I saw that she was not smiling back. Okay, hard women but I had already expected that by hearing her voice.

‘’Good.. You are going to clean the stairs.. Starting with this one’’ She said and handed me a hand scrubber. I looked at the small, hand sized scrubber and then at the stairs. Was she serious? I looked up at her but she looked at me with a eyebrow raised. Okay, she was serious. I nodded and decided that fighting with Valentino was enough for today and that I would listen to what ever job this women would give me.

I put the scrubber in the water, which was really hot and burned my hand a little. I quickly pulled my hand out but had let go of the scrubber.

‘’I want you to be done before dinner, once you reach the bottom of the stairs, you will find a few towels there so you can dry the stairs’’ The women said and then left. I took a deep breath and then grabbed the scrubber and started scrubbing the stairs. Would this be my life in the palace from now on?
