Old Flames, New Rules

Seeing Daniel felt like stepping into a memory I hadn’t visited in years. Same warm eyes. Same crooked smile. Just a little older now, a little steadier. “I thought I was imagining things,” he said. “You disappeared.” “So did you,” I replied softly. We stood there for a moment, suspended between then and now, until reality crept back in. “I’m married,” I said. His smile faded, just slightly. “I know.” That caught me off guard. “You do?” “You don’t exactly keep a low profile anymore,” he said. “Blackwood weddings make headlines.” I exhaled. Of course they did. We decided to walk. The city hummed around us, familiar and distant all at once. “You look different,” Daniel said after a while. “So do you.” “No,” he replied gently. “You look… guarded. Like someone who learned how to survive.” The words hit too close. “Life does that,” I said. He nodded. “You left without saying goodbye. I always wondered why.” I stopped walking. “Because staying felt like drowning,” I said quietly. “And you were happy. I didn’t want to drag you down with me.” Daniel turned to face me fully. “You don’t get to decide that for me.” Silence. Then he sighed. “I loved you, Ava.” My chest tightened. “You loved the girl I was,” I said. “She doesn’t exist anymore.” “Maybe,” he said. “But I’d like to meet the woman you became.” The air between us grew heavy. I should’ve walked away. Instead, I said, “I’m not free.” “I know,” he replied. “I’m not asking you to be.” That scared me more than anything. When I returned home, Ethan was waiting. Leaning against the counter. Arms crossed. Jaw tight. “Long walk,” he said. I set my bag down calmly. “I ran into someone.” “I noticed,” he replied. “Daniel Reyes.” So he knew. “He’s part of your past,” Ethan continued. “And now he’s circling.” I met his gaze. “He didn’t circle. He spoke.” “And you listened.” “Yes,” I said. “Because for once, someone spoke to me without an agenda.” The words landed hard. Ethan stepped closer, his voice low. “You think I have one?” “You always do,” I replied. “Even when you don’t mean to.” Silence filled the room. Then he said, “Does he matter?” I hesitated. And that was answer enough. His jaw tightened. “I won’t compete.” “I didn’t ask you to,” I said. “But I won’t be controlled either.” He exhaled slowly, like a man choosing restraint over instinct. “You’re my wife,” he said. “And I’m still my own person,” I replied. Our eyes locked. This wasn’t about Daniel. It was about choice. And for the first time since this marriage began… Ethan realized he could lose me.
