What She Meant

Clara called that evening. I almost didn’t answer. Almost. “Hello?” I said cautiously. “I’m glad it’s you,” she replied. Her voice was calm. Too calm. “I was worried Ethan would pick up.” My grip tightened around the phone. “What do you want?” “To talk,” she said. “Woman to woman.” I hesitated. “About what?” “About him.” I exhaled slowly. “I don’t think that’s appropriate.” She laughed softly. “Neither is your marriage, but here we are.” Silence. “Meet me,” she continued. “You deserve context.” I should’ve said no. Instead, an hour later, I was sitting across from her in a quiet café. She looked different outside Ethan’s world. Less polished. More human. “I’m not here to steal him,” she said first. “If that’s what you’re thinking.” “Then why are we here?” I asked. She studied me. “Do you love him?” The question caught me off guard. “That’s none of your business.” “That’s a no,” she said gently. “Good.” I frowned. “Good?” “Because he does,” she said. “In his own broken way.” My heart stuttered. “That’s not funny.” “I’m not joking,” she replied. “But he didn’t love me.” I stared at her. “You just said—” “He needed me,” she corrected. “After his father died, Ethan shut down. I was there. I helped him breathe again. But he never let me in.” The words settled slowly. “He proposed once,” she continued. “Out of obligation. Just like you.” My chest tightened. “Why didn’t you marry him?” “Because I wanted love,” she said simply. “Not survival.” I swallowed. “So why did he marry me?” Her gaze softened. “Because you scare him.” “Excuse me?” “You make him feel things he can’t control,” she said. “And Ethan Blackwood doesn’t trust anything he can’t manage.” I leaned back, shaken. “Then why are you telling me this?” I asked quietly. Clara reached for her cup. “Because I needed to see if you were strong enough to stand where I couldn’t.” I stood up, my legs unsteady. “I didn’t ask for this.” “I know,” she said. “Neither did he.” As I walked away, one thought echoed in my mind. Clara wasn’t a threat. The truth was.
