Three days after the ambush, Kael found her. Brenna. She was hiding in the abandoned Hollowshade village, where the Queen’s magic had once bled the trees dry and twisted the land. Now, it pulsed with decay. “She’s alone,” Kael said, pacing the war tent. “No sign of the Queen. Just… waiting.” “For me,” I whispered. Kael’s jaw clenched. “She betrayed us.” “She was my sister in all but blood. I have to know why.” He didn’t argue. He just kissed my forehead. “Don’t go alone.” “I won’t.
