Chapter 2 - Welcome to the forest

2487 Words
The first thing that I noticed was the eerie silence, unlike Flutter's Cove that always buzzed with life and noise and chatter, the only noise that passed through one's ears was the chirps of the nocturnal critters that bathed in the moonlight. That's the next thing that I recognized, it was no longer day, no longer noon instead It was the first light of the moon. I was confused, how can It be day in Flutter's Cove but Night here, whenever I looked through the border it would always mirror our Cove and now I knew why it was to keep the Flutters calm from all the wild beasts of Krynsín. That was the third thing that I discovered, the critters here were quite rare, never seen before at least not by me. The forest had butterflies as huge as my palms put together that flapped with wings of fire; they didn't drink the sweet-tasting nectar; instead, they hovered over the leaking sap of the tall oak trees. The owls were all an eerie shade of magenta, bright and beautiful but hard to camouflage. The end of their bodies harbored a long feathery tail, as long as a monkey with a white tip at its ending. The moss wasn't green but blood-red, providing the perfect contrast to the tall green trees that towered my best friend and I. The moonlight could hardly peep through the thick leaves and the strange creatures neared us in curiosity. Holding Karla's hand, we went deeper into the jaws of Krynsín, ducking dead branches and pulling at loose vines until we finally encountered a clearing. Our bags pressured our frail arms forcing us to drop them. My lungs drew sharply for breath but the eerie silence grew so loud that I wanted to scream at it to shut up. It was too silent until low goals swam through my ears. My head snapped around to the 9ft monster that towered Karla and I. Its breaths soaked into our skin as its claws rubbed against each other to sharpen. Its amber eyes glinted with delight as its scorched skin hissed at the light. Loud screams left both of our mouths as we took off into the forest hand in hand. Couldn't I just catch a breath? My feet felt sore from the previous running and my heart was tired from banging against my rib cage and my cheeks were raw from the crying. I just couldn't take it anymore. My Lungs painfully took in some air as I dragged Karla with me through the red vines, heavy footsteps and loud growls echoed behind us but we dared not look at the monstrous thing. After the whole chase mother nature decided to be lenient with us and My toe tripped over an exposed root and my body began its tumble with Kalra into a tree stump hidden by thick red vines and moss. The Lethal's pacing became louder and louder as it looked for us, desperately wanting to sink its sharp teeth into our necks. My heart was out of control, the knicks and scrapes that we received from the fall burned vigorously and Karla hissed at the assaults. "What are we going to do?" I asked her. "That thing is going to rip us to sheets and the only thing that I saw kill them was mother's spell. That was fire magic...We're earth and water!" "Shh! You're going to get us caught! We'll just...wait it out until morning, there is enough room here for us to sleep but we dropped our bags uphill so we have nothing to cover ourselves with." "Are you sure that thing isn't going to find us?" By the time my sentence filled Kalra's ears, a loud growl sounded before us and the burning stench filled my nose, heavy breathing sounded outside. Our breaths catch as the loud cracking of bones and crushing of leaves from added pressure could only suggest that the Lethal has found out the little hiding place. I could only imagine what will happen to us if these mosses provide no shield. Fat tears rolled from my verdant eyes sliding down my raw cheeks. The creature is outside waiting to rip our skins off of our bodies and I could barely process what's happening since my mother died. My mind was hazy and my vision seemed foggy. The footsteps grew closer, mocking our distress, taunting us. I held onto Karla tightly as she looked for a way out of the small ditch. The loud crunching stopped, heat lit up the ditch like a wildfire, sweat pooled down my forehead like a waterfall. The heat felt hotter than inside a volcano. The creature's loud growls had me frightened out of my wits. Karla firmly locked her hand over my mouth to prevent any slipping sounds. The smell of her lavender perfume wafted through my nose, calming me down a little. My ears warmed up from her breathing as she began whispering. "I need you to calm down, I'm going to go out there and distract it and I want you to run as far away-" I thrashed around trying to tell her that I would never leave her to get burned alive. I've already watched my mother die, I was not going to lose Karla too. My hands made haste towards hers, ripping it off of my mouth quickly, sprinting outside to face the dangerous creature. The Lethal extended its b****y claws from its long limbs, it looked at me with sudden intrigue rushing after me to deliver my horrid fate. "No!" Karla dashed after me capturing the Lethals attention. Its Blood-red eyes searched her soul deeply and its head titled in cofusion. The thing made quick steps towards her and all the former courage that I had completely dispersed. I was frozen in absolute fear. Karla went straight towards the Lethal, spewing powerful spells at it. The Lethal remained unscathed from her powerful blows. I was stuck in the middle of the forest with the slight rain drenching my skin. I couldn't even help my friend, I couldn't spew spells that I knew would do more damage. "Wélexinious Wencoúver!" The wind stilled as the moon dulled. The creatures of the night remained hidden but croaked loud warning at the spell she just cast. Karla's eyes glowed a bright blue as her hair took the same shade, flowing freely like a river. The middles of her outstretched hands had the same blue that was directed behind us. The sound of water crashing against something caught all of our attention. There behind me, a wave of fresh water was heading quickly towards us, destroying everything in its path. The Lethal realizes its final destination and ran after Karla with lightning speed. My shaking legs took me far away from the wave but closer towards the Lethal that wanted to hurt my friend. A loud cry echoed from Karla just as the rogue wave crashed against the Lethal washing it away from both of us, carrying it only where mother nature wanted it to be. The hot steam from the water created thick fog in the forest and the chirps of the wild creatures that were in the water's way. I couldn't see anything past the thick fog but I had to find Karla. I kneeled on the floor on crunchy leaves, crawling towards my best friend who was choking as if she was coughing up something. "Karla?" The only sounds that answered me were the distant coughs that got closer with each crawl. Soon enough the fog cleared to reveal a gravely hurt Karla. A deep gash remained on her stomach spilling her body's contents. "KARLA!" I immediately picked her up, turning her on her side so that she could stop choking on her blood. My eyes were wet with tears as I tried to make sense of the situation. The Lethal must have gotten to her before the wave did and now I don't even know how to help her. My head was spinning and my breathing sped up as I was looking around the forest for answers I knew that it couldn't give. Suddenly, A bright light flashed through the forest behind some of the tall trees, the moon shined brightly as if it had received great news, the wind picked up its speed and the nocturnals were no longer crying in distress. Behind one of the tall oaks, came a Sprite boy. His skin glistened in the moonlight, blinding me shortly from the brightness. His dull milky eyes provided warmth and the slight glow of his transparent bee-like wings gave me comfort and trust. He made quick way towards my dying friend stretching his hand over her large gash and reciting words far older than myself. Soon enough the disturbing choking noises that Kalra provided seized and her breathing finally slowed. My verdants looked down on her pale skin, soaked with sweat but her healed gash had me pulling her into my arms tightly. I can't lose her, I didn't know what I would do if I did. "You think that you'll get rid of me that easily?" Her pearly whites shine in the moonlight as our heavy chuckles echo in the forest. As I was about to thank the Sprite I realized that the mystical creature had already disappeared. I took up Karla slowly testing her balance and strength, she healed pretty quickly dragging me towards our luggage that we ran away from and continuing our journey. Soon enough the Moon became the Sun and its heat offered no mercy, the scorches that it left on the ground and our backs were unbearable and we both wished that we would find someone to help us already. "The forest isn't like Flutter's Cove Lav, It's filled with more mythical creatures than you could ever imagine," Karla trotted through the heat, swatting at the unwanted leaves and searching for where we should venture next. "Don't you think that I know that Karla, We were just attacked by one and we saw others for crying out loud," My forehead laced with sweat that wet the front and back of my shirt. My feet felt as if they were going to break off if we took one step further. Her blue eyes locked on mine in annoyance. She stopped both of us in our tracks talking an audible gulp and wiping off the thick sweat from her forehead before speaking. "What I'm trying to say is that your mother knew more about these creatures and the forest than anyone else, so you should open the note," My shirt wiped away my forehead's sweat as I panted at the melting heat. They were no creatures in sight. No form of life and that scared me but the thought of opening my mother's not scared me even more. "I know, I know, it's just that if I open this then I know that she's really....gone," Karla's blues laced with sympathy as she pulled me in, stroking my wet hair and rocking me from side to side. Heavy tears flowed down my cheeks temporarily cooling down my hot face. She rubbed my shoulders having tears in her own eyes. "I know that it's tough but you need to come to terms with this, plus I don't want to see you being burnt alive by a Lethal." She slowly unwrapped herself from me, my shaking hands crept into my soaked shirt, pulling out the last words that my mother had for me. The tears blurred my vision slightly as I slowly unraveled it. Clearing my blocked throat I recited her words. "Dear Lavender, If you are reading this note, it means that I've passed on my dear. I never wanted you to find out about the curse and I will never forgive myself for not telling you sooner my child. I have been spending years trying to break that evil curse cast on you but I couldn't. The only way was to let you stop a war that not even the elders of our kind could. A war amongst the Primal four, however, these four aren't the real ones they are elders of Krynsín, people who didn't trust your Father's mating with a Vampire and a Werewolf sworn enemies of Krynsín." My eyebrows furrowed in confusion. What Vampire and Werewolf was she talking about? The only time that she mentioned my father was when I was twelve, she said that he went missing and I never heard about him again. My eyes scrolled across the old parchment, reciting her words once more. "Lavender, my child, the original Primal four were to be your Brothers and sister but because of the Lethal's creation, the Elders blamed your siblings for the Lethal's attacks and now the supernatural are blaming each other no one knows where they truly come from and I believe that that is your key to survival." Tears leaked from my eyes as I realized that my mother has been keeping so many secrets from me that I've lost count. What if my Father isn't even dead? She already kept my siblings and my curse from me, what else was she hiding? "I know that you might not want to come to terms with what I just wrote, and you may not believe me, but it's nothing but the truth dear. They are all your father's children, but you are my only child, the others came from different mothers. Your father did go missing though, one of the other mysteries in my life that I couldn't solve, but he loved you and he wished great things from this world." Karla's eyes scanned my trembling body as she pulled me in for another one of her infamous hugs. "I couldn't bear to tell you about the curse as I knew I you how would take it and your father...he was such a good man and you too have bonded so well. P-Please don't hate me for not telling you this, my dying wish is to make sure that this evil curse doesn't harm you and it was what I've been working on for years, child. All the times that I've been locked up in my office was to find out more about the war so that I could h-help you, dear." I broke down at her revelation. She always wanted to keep me safe from any type of danger and now she wasn't here to shelter me. Now I couldn't feel her hugs anymore or have a talk with her or let her fight my battles. My battles became my own overnight and my body felt cold from the lack of shelter. Karla slowly wiped away my tears, asking me to continue. I began after clearing my sore throat. The sun's heat bit at us showing no empathy for our current situation.
