The howl did not sound like a wolf.
It sounded older.
Wrong.
The noise rolled through the forest like thunder, deep enough to vibrate beneath Lyra’s skin. Every wolf in the clearing froze instantly.
Fear spread through both packs.
Real fear.
Kael tightened his grip around Lyra automatically as his silver eyes scanned the darkness beyond the trees.
“What was that?” Lyra whispered weakly.
No one answered her.
Ronan’s face had gone pale beneath the moonlight. “It shouldn’t be awake.”
Kael’s jaw hardened. “The bond triggered it.”
Lyra looked between them anxiously. “Triggered what?”
Another distant howl echoed through the mountains.
Closer this time.
The glowing mark on Lyra’s chest pulsed violently in response.
Pain shot through her body again.
She cried out softly, gripping Kael’s shirt as her knees weakened.
Kael immediately steadied her.
“Easy.”
The word came out rougher than expected.
Protective.
Ronan noticed.
The look he gave Kael carried warning.
Possessiveness.
Lyra was beginning to understand something dangerous about werewolves:
They felt everything intensely.
Anger.
Instinct.
Jealousy.
Protection.
And whatever this bond was…
It was affecting both Alphas badly.
The scarred wolf from Kael’s pack stepped forward nervously. “Alpha, we need to leave. Now.”
Ronan nodded once. “He’s right.”
Kael didn’t move immediately.
His gaze remained fixed on the darkness ahead.
Listening.
Calculating.
Then finally, he looked down at Lyra.
“You’re coming to Shadowfang territory.”
Lyra blinked. “Excuse me?”
“You are no longer safe in Black Hollow.”
“I barely know you.”
“You don’t need to know me to be hunted.”
The bluntness of his response irritated her instantly.
Ronan crossed his arms. “Taking her to your territory will start a war.”
Kael’s eyes sharpened. “She already carries my mark.”
“And she reacted to mine.”
Silence followed.
Lyra frowned. “What does that mean?”
Ronan’s expression darkened slightly.
Instead of answering, he stepped closer carefully.
Kael growled instantly.
The sound was low and dangerous.
Ronan ignored him completely.
His golden eyes settled on Lyra. “May I?”
She hesitated.
Kael clearly hated whatever Ronan was about to do.
That alone made her suspicious.
Still confused and overwhelmed, she gave a small nod.
Ronan slowly reached toward her hand.
The second his fingers touched her skin—
Pain exploded through Lyra’s chest.
She gasped sharply.
A pulse of silver light burst from the mark beneath her collarbone.
Ronan froze.
His golden eyes widened.
Then suddenly, a glowing golden line appeared briefly beneath the skin of his wrist before disappearing again.
The clearing erupted into chaos.
“That’s impossible!”
“She reacted to him!”
“The Goddess protect us—”
Kael shoved Ronan backward violently.
“You touched her bond.”
Ronan looked just as shaken. “She answered it.”
Lyra stared at both of them in panic. “Stop speaking like I’m not here!”
Kael ignored her completely.
His silver eyes burned with restrained fury as he looked at Ronan. “Stay away from her.”
Ronan laughed softly, though tension filled the sound. “You think I have a choice now?”
The words unsettled Lyra deeply.
Kael looked ready to kill him.
Ronan looked dangerously close to losing control himself.
And somehow…
She was connected to both of them.
Another howl echoed through the forest.
Much closer now.
Every wolf immediately became alert again.
Ronan’s expression hardened. “We’re out of time.”
Kael nodded once reluctantly.
Then his gaze shifted toward Lyra again.
“You ride with me.”
“I’m not riding anything.”
“You can barely stand.”
“I can walk.”
As if to embarrass her, dizziness hit immediately after the words left her mouth.
Kael caught her before she fell again.
His hand pressed firmly against her waist.
Warmth rushed painfully through the bond.
Both of them inhaled sharply.
Lyra looked up at him.
Too close.
His silver eyes had softened again.
Just slightly.
Enough to make her chest tighten strangely.
Then Ronan’s voice cut through the moment.
“She needs control before the bond fully settles.”
Kael’s expression darkened immediately. “It won’t settle.”
Ronan held his gaze evenly. “You know that’s not true.”
Lyra looked between them anxiously. “What happens if it does?”
Neither Alpha answered.
That terrified her more than anything.
Finally, Ronan spoke quietly.
“If the bond completes…”
His eyes lowered briefly to the glowing mark on her chest.
“You’ll belong to us completely.”
The forest suddenly felt too small.
Too dangerous.
Lyra pulled herself out of Kael’s hold immediately.
“I’m not belonging to anyone.”
The words came out stronger this time.
Steadier.
For a moment, both Alphas simply stared at her.
Then unexpectedly—
Ronan smiled slightly.
Not mocking.
Almost impressed.
Kael looked at her with something unreadable in his silver eyes.
Respect.
And something far more dangerous beginning to grow beneath it.
Then the trees behind them suddenly exploded with movement.
A monstrous growl shook the clearing.
Every wolf spun toward the darkness instantly.
And two glowing red eyes appeared between the trees.
