The journey through the forest felt endless.
Snow crunched beneath Lyra’s boots as she followed closely behind Kael’s wolves. Dawn had not yet reached the mountains, but the sky had begun turning dark gray above the trees.
Everything hurt.
Her shoulder burned from the rogue attack.
The mark beneath her collarbone pulsed constantly.
And exhaustion weighed so heavily on her body that each step became harder than the last.
Still, she refused to complain.
Not in front of them.
Kael walked ahead in silence, his massive black wolf moving smoothly through the snow-covered forest. Ronan remained several feet behind her with his own wolves, golden eyes constantly scanning their surroundings.
Neither Alpha trusted the other.
That much was obvious.
The tension between them filled the air so heavily that even the wolves stayed quiet.
Lyra wrapped her arms tighter around herself against the cold.
Everything happening felt unreal.
Yesterday she had been worried about rent money and moonroot herbs.
Now entire packs wanted her dead.
A branch cracked somewhere nearby.
Kael immediately stopped walking.
Every wolf froze.
Ronan stepped closer to Lyra instantly.
Protective.
Again.
The reaction irritated her almost as much as it confused her.
Kael shifted back into human form slowly, snow falling from his dark hair as silver eyes scanned the trees around them.
“We’re close,” he said quietly.
Lyra frowned. “Close to what?”
“Shadowfang territory.”
The way he said it made something uneasy settle in her stomach.
Territory.
Like entering meant crossing into something permanent.
Ronan clearly thought the same.
His expression darkened immediately. “This is a mistake.”
Kael looked at him coldly. “Then leave.”
“You know I can’t.”
The words came out sharper than expected.
Kael’s jaw tightened.
Lyra noticed it instantly.
The bond between them was already affecting both Alphas more than they wanted to admit.
Ronan hated it.
Kael feared it.
And somehow she was trapped in the middle of both.
The mark beneath her collarbone suddenly warmed again.
Lyra winced softly.
Immediately, both Alphas looked at her.
Every single time.
Like they could sense her discomfort.
Kael stepped toward her first. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.”
“You’re in pain.”
Ronan moved closer too. “The bond is draining her.”
Kael’s expression darkened. “We need to stabilize it before nightfall.”
Lyra frowned tiredly. “Stop talking about me like I’m dying.”
Silence followed.
No one corrected her.
Fear tightened painfully in her chest.
Kael noticed immediately.
His face softened slightly before hardening again.
“You’re not dying.”
“But?”
Kael looked away briefly.
Ronan answered instead.
“Your body is struggling to carry both bonds.”
The honesty in his voice somehow made it worse.
Lyra swallowed hard. “And if it can’t?”
Neither Alpha answered immediately.
That silence terrified her more than words could have.
Then suddenly—
The forest opened.
Lyra stopped walking.
Massive stone walls stretched across the mountainside ahead of them, surrounded by towering pine forests and cliffs dusted with snow. Smoke curled from dozens of chimneys inside the walls while large wooden homes sat beneath the rising dawn.
Shadowfang territory.
It looked less like a village…
And more like a kingdom hidden inside the mountains.
Large wolves patrolled along the walls.
The second they saw Kael—
Howls echoed through the territory.
The gates opened immediately.
Lyra’s stomach tightened as hundreds of eyes turned toward her the moment she stepped inside.
The scent of wolves surrounded her instantly.
Men.
Women.
Children.
All werewolves.
And every single one stared.
Some looked curious.
Others looked confused.
But most looked alarmed.
Because they could smell the Alpha mark on her.
Whispers spread through the crowd immediately.
“That’s the human?”
“She carries his scent.”
“How is she alive?”
Lyra fought the urge to shrink into herself.
Kael noticed.
Without saying a word, he moved closer beside her.
The simple action silenced most of the whispers instantly.
Fear.
Respect.
Submission.
His people feared him deeply.
A woman suddenly pushed through the crowd.
Tall and sharp-eyed with dark braided hair, she stopped directly in front of Kael.
Then her gaze landed on Lyra.
Shock crossed her face instantly.
“Oh Goddess…”
Kael’s expression remained unreadable. “Where’s the healer?”
The woman barely looked away from Lyra. “Inside the hall.”
Her eyes narrowed slightly. “What did you do?”
Kael’s jaw tightened. “Not now, Mira.”
Mira.
Lyra noticed the concern hidden beneath the woman’s shock immediately.
And suspicion.
A lot of suspicion.
Then Mira looked directly at the glowing mark beneath Lyra’s collarbone.
Her face lost all color.
“That’s impossible.” Her voice lowered into a whisper. “Alpha bonds don’t look like that.”
Ronan walked into the territory behind them.
The second Mira caught his scent too—
Her expression turned horrified.
She looked between both Alphas slowly.
Then at Lyra.
Understanding dawned across her face.
“No,” she whispered. “No… absolutely not.”
Kael’s expression darkened. “Take her inside.”
Mira looked genuinely disturbed now.
“Kael…”
“That wasn’t a request.”
The woman fell silent immediately.
Still shaken, she stepped toward Lyra carefully.
“Come with me.”
Lyra hesitated.
Every instinct told her not to trust anyone here.
But exhaustion was winning.
As she followed Mira toward the large hall ahead, she could still feel both Alphas watching her.
Constantly.
Possessively.
And somehow…
The bond inside her seemed to pulse stronger the farther she walked away from them.
