Chapter 19: The First Strike
The next morning, Elena awoke with a renewed sense of determination. The weight of fear was still there, but it was no longer crushing her—it had transformed into something else. Something sharper. A weapon she could wield rather than a burden she had to carry.
She sat up in bed, her fingers gripping the sheets as she listened to the quiet sounds of Graham moving around the apartment. He had barely left her side since Adam’s intrusion, and she knew he wouldn’t until this battle was over.
Elena swung her legs over the edge of the bed and stood, stretching her stiff limbs. When she stepped into the living room, she found Graham at the dining table, his laptop open in front of him, his brow furrowed in focus. A stack of legal papers sat beside him, and his phone was resting nearby, indicating he had already been making calls.
He looked up when he heard her enter, his expression softening. "Morning," he greeted, his voice low but warm. "How’d you sleep?"
"Better," she admitted. "Not perfect, but better."
He gestured toward the coffee pot on the counter. "I made coffee."
Elena smiled faintly and walked over, pouring herself a cup before joining him at the table. As she took her first sip, she glanced at the papers. "What’s all this?"
Graham exhaled and ran a hand through his hair. "Paperwork for the restraining order. My lawyer sent over everything we need to file, but I want to go a step further."
Elena’s fingers tightened around her mug. "What do you mean?"
"I want to file charges," he said firmly. "Adam has broken the law multiple times—harassment, stalking, attempted forced entry. If we go after him legally, he won’t just get a restraining order. He could face real consequences."
A shiver ran down Elena’s spine at the thought of escalating things. But wasn’t that what she had decided last night? That she wouldn’t hide anymore? That she would fight back?
"Okay," she said, setting her coffee down. "Let’s do it."
Graham’s gaze lingered on her for a moment, as if gauging whether she was truly ready for this. Then he nodded. "Alright. I’ll call my lawyer and set up a meeting. The more evidence we have, the stronger our case will be."
Elena swallowed. Evidence. That meant bringing up the past, reliving the things she had worked so hard to forget. She wasn’t sure she could stomach it, but she had to try.
"Do you have any old messages from him?" Graham asked. "Texts, emails, anything threatening?"
Elena hesitated before nodding. "I never deleted them. I just... I couldn’t bring myself to go through them."
Graham reached across the table, taking her hand in his. "You don’t have to do this alone. I’ll be with you."
She took a deep breath. "Okay. Let’s get started."
An Unwelcome Reminder
By midday, Elena had gone through dozens of old messages, each one dragging her back into the suffocating fear Adam had instilled in her. She had kept them buried in a folder on her phone, unopened for months. But as she read through them now, she realized something she hadn’t before—she wasn’t that same scared woman anymore.
Adam’s words still stung, but they no longer controlled her. They no longer defined her.
Graham was by her side the entire time, silently offering support as she compiled the worst of the messages and emails. The evidence was damning. Adam had been controlling, manipulative, and, in many instances, outright threatening.
"This is more than enough," Graham said, his voice tight with restrained anger as he skimmed through the screenshots. "He’s going to pay for this."
Elena nodded, exhaustion settling into her bones. "I just want it to be over."
Graham sighed. "We’re getting closer, Elena. One step at a time."
Before either of them could say more, a sharp knock sounded at the door.
Elena tensed instantly, her heartbeat spiking.
Graham was already on his feet, his body positioning itself protectively between her and the door. He checked the peephole, his expression hardening.
"It’s Sophie."
Relief flooded Elena’s chest. Graham opened the door, and Sophie stepped in, shaking the rain off her coat.
"God, it’s miserable out there," she said, kicking off her wet boots. "But I came as soon as I got your message."
She turned to Elena, her eyes filled with concern. "Are you okay?"
Elena forced a smile. "I’m getting there."
Sophie hugged her tightly before stepping back, glancing at the table covered in documents. "So, this is happening?"
Elena nodded. "We’re filing a restraining order and pressing charges."
Sophie let out a slow breath. "Good. It’s about time." She shot a glance at Graham. "How long will this process take?"
Graham rubbed the back of his neck. "The restraining order could go through within a few days, but the criminal charges will take longer. We need to make sure we have a solid case before we take it to the police."
Sophie folded her arms. "Adam isn’t going to like this."
Elena swallowed hard. "I know."
Sophie’s expression softened. "I’ll be with you every step of the way. Whatever you need."
Elena nodded, grateful beyond words. For so long, she had been afraid to ask for help. But now, with Graham and Sophie by her side, she didn’t feel alone anymore.
A Message from the Devil
That evening, after Sophie left, Elena sat curled up on the couch, scrolling through her messages one last time. She wanted to be done with it, to put it all behind her.
But then, her phone vibrated.
Her stomach dropped.
A new message.
From him.
Her fingers trembled as she opened it.
You think you’re safe with him? You think I’ll just let you walk away? You belong to me, Elena. And if you try to run, I will make sure you regret it.
A choked gasp left her lips.
Graham, who had been cleaning up the kitchen, immediately noticed the change in her posture. "Elena?"
She turned to him, her face pale, her hands shaking as she held out the phone.
Graham grabbed it, reading the message. His entire body went rigid. His jaw clenched, his grip tightening on the phone so hard his knuckles turned white.
His voice was low, but filled with rage. "That bastard just made the biggest mistake of his life."
Elena took a shaky breath.
Adam thought he could still control her.
He thought he could still win.
But he was wrong.
This wasn’t over.
Not by a long shot.
Chapter 20: The War Begins
Elena stared at the glowing screen of her phone, her pulse roaring in her ears. Adam’s words felt like a clawed hand around her throat, squeezing the air from her lungs.
You think you’re safe with him? You think I’ll just let you walk away? You belong to me, Elena. And if you try to run, I will make sure you regret it.
A fresh wave of nausea rolled through her. How had he gotten her number again? She had blocked him on everything, changed her contact information, and yet, somehow, he had still found a way in.
Graham was already dialing a number, his expression hard as stone. “This ends now.”
Elena swallowed, forcing her voice to steady. “Who are you calling?”
“My lawyer,” he said, pacing the length of the living room. “And after that, the police. We’re not waiting anymore.”
Elena sat frozen on the couch, her fingers gripping the throw pillow in her lap. Adam’s threats were escalating. He wasn’t just lurking in the shadows anymore—he was making it clear that he wasn’t going to let her go without a fight.
Graham spoke in clipped, angry tones as he relayed the situation to his lawyer, outlining the years of harassment and now the direct threat. He nodded as he listened, then his expression darkened. “Yes. I’ll bring her first thing in the morning.” A pause. “Thank you.”
He hung up and turned to her. “We’re filing everything tomorrow. No more waiting, no more second-guessing.”
Elena nodded, though her stomach twisted with unease. She knew this was the right thing to do, but the thought of facing Adam in a legal battle made her skin crawl.
Graham walked over and crouched in front of her, taking her hands in his. His touch was warm, grounding. “I need you to hear me,” he said, his voice firm but gentle. “Adam is a coward who thrives on control. He wants you to be afraid. He wants you to second-guess yourself, to feel trapped. But you’re not. You have me. You have Sophie. You have the law on your side.”
Elena bit her lip, her chest tightening. “And if he doesn’t care about the law?”
Graham’s expression turned lethal. “Then I’ll make him care.”
The sheer force of his protectiveness sent a shiver down her spine. Graham had always been composed, rational, but there was an edge to him now—a fire in his eyes that spoke of a man who would tear down walls to keep her safe.
Elena exhaled slowly. “Okay,” she whispered. “We fight.”
A Visit to the Police Station
The next morning, Elena barely touched her coffee as she and Graham sat across from Detective Marcus Langley, a sharp-eyed man in his mid-forties with graying temples. His office smelled of stale coffee and old paper, the air thick with the weight of a thousand unsolved cases.
Langley flipped through the file Graham’s lawyer had prepared—screenshots of Adam’s texts, call logs, and a detailed statement of his past abuse. He exhaled through his nose as he read. “Jesus,” he muttered. “This guy’s relentless.”
Elena swallowed hard. “Will this be enough for a restraining order?”
Langley leaned back in his chair. “Absolutely. I’ll fast-track it. Given his past history and this new threat, I’d say we have a strong case.” He turned to Graham. “You mentioned possible criminal charges?”
Graham nodded. “Breaking and entering, harassment, stalking. He showed up at her apartment, tried to force his way in.”
Langley frowned. “Do you have surveillance footage? Witnesses?”
Elena hesitated, but Graham spoke. “We have a security camera outside her building. It should have caught him.”
Langley nodded. “Good. If we can get that footage, we’ll have more leverage.” He closed the file and looked at Elena. “I won’t lie to you—this process won’t be easy. A restraining order is just a piece of paper. It doesn’t stop a determined man.”
Elena’s stomach twisted. “So what do I do?”
Langley’s face softened. “You stay vigilant. Keep your doors locked. Change your routines. And if he comes near you, call us immediately. We’ll do everything we can to keep you safe.”
Graham’s jaw flexed. “And if the police can’t stop him?”
Langley gave him a measured look. “Then you do whatever you have to do to protect her.”
A chill ran through Elena at the unspoken meaning behind his words.
This wasn’t just a legal battle. This was war.
An Unwanted Encounter
By the time they left the station, Elena felt drained. Graham’s grip on her hand was firm as they walked back to his car, the cold air biting at their skin.
As they reached the vehicle, Elena’s phone buzzed. She hesitated before glancing at the screen.
Unknown Number.
Her blood ran cold.
Graham noticed instantly. “Elena?”
She answered, pressing the phone to her ear. “Hello?”
Silence.
Then—
A slow, deliberate chuckle.
“I warned you,” Adam’s voice slithered through the speaker, sending ice through her veins. “You think a restraining order scares me? You think Graham can protect you? He can’t. No one can.”
Elena’s breath hitched. “Stay away from me.”
“You can’t run from me, Elena,” he murmured. “You’ll see that soon enough.”
The line went dead.
Her hands trembled as she lowered the phone. Graham was already reaching for it. “Was that him?”
She nodded, too shaken to speak.
Graham’s face darkened with fury. “That’s it. I’m done playing by the rules.”
Before she could stop him, he grabbed his own phone and dialed.
“Who are you calling?” she asked, her voice shaking.
Graham’s gaze was steely. “Someone who can make sure Adam never bothers you again.”
Elena’s heart pounded. “What does that mean?”
But Graham didn’t answer.
And as the call connected, she realized that this fight was about to take a very dangerous turn.
