Guinevere's POV:
I couldn't breathe.
The moment I opened my mouth, salty water filled my throat and I gurgled, trying to push it out.
It only made things harder. I closed my eyes tightly as water invaded my nostrils.
I was going to die.
The man holding my head had no plans of releasing me no matter how much I struggled against him.
Was this really how I was going to die?
I couldn't help but wonder as my heart started to slow down. I could feel my body shut down and I didn't fight it.
My father died while jaywalking. Grandpa died from tripping after getting drunk.
And now I was about to die from drowning. Funny enough, I was drowning against my wish… if that made sense.
Just when I was sure that I was going to die, the man pulled my head up.
It took a second for my brain to start to function once more.
I quickly took a large inhale of fresh air. I retched over as a violent cough took over my body.
“f**k you,” I muttered the moment I was good enough.
My eyes darted to the man sitting on a chair, not far from the bath tub. He called the shots so I glared at him.
He simply tilted his head and cross-legged. I was sure if I saw him on the street, I would take him as a rich civil servant.
“You know… signing a contract under duress makes it an invali-
I got interrupted when the man behind me grabbed my hair making my roots scream. I let out a shriek as I struggled against him.
He didn't let me go until the… spectator waved his hand.
I massaged my scalp while wondering how I had gotten myself into this situation.
The spectator dusted invisible dirt from his white shirt and sat straight.
“If I didn't know better, I would think you were a lawyer and not a con artist,” he said coolly, adjusting his glasses at the end of his statement.
I didn't say a word and moved just a bit to rest my back against the bathtub. Maybe if I stayed like this, it would be hard to dip my head.
I watched him open his suitcase and produce a paper. I knew what it was immediately and felt my heart drop.
“Signing isn't that hard,” he started and beckoned his minion.
“Considering the fact that you actually owe me,” he completed and narrowed his eyes at me through his glasses.
I caught sight of the brightest green eyes I've ever seen and was taken aback.
I couldn't do anything but stay as hulk begrudgingly squatted in front of me. He huffed and I felt his breath push my wet hair out of my face.
“Sign it,” his voice was as grumpy as I expected.
Would sweet talking work on him? I wondered as I stared at him.
A glare from his bloodshot eyes was enough answer for me.
I glanced down at the paper, my hand itching to read the content. With a bit of hesitation that seemed to tighten the tension, I collected it.
I had barely finished reading the first line when the sum I owed caught my eyes.
It felt as if my brain stopped working for a minute as I stared blankly, trying to understand what I was reading.
A movement from hulk/minion made me snap out of my daze and I let out a gasp just before I whipped my head up.
“You're the con artist here,” I accused the boss, my grip on the paper tightening.
His left brow seemed to twitch as he let out a shaky breath. It didn't seem like he appreciated that.
And I didn't give a f**k.
I had scammed only twenty thousand but I was expected to pay back fifty million.
I wasn't going to agree to this obvious scam so I threw the paper into the water. The dirty sight of the water my head came out from a while ago, made me want to puke.
The man sat still for a while before he opened his suitcase and brought out another paper. He paused for a second then said, “Read through it well.”
For some reason it sounded like a threat.
I felt the hair on my neck stand as I maintained eye contact with him. I still couldn't point out what was scary about him.
To ease the sudden intimidation I felt, I muttered, “You came prepared.”
I snatched the paper from his minion and obeyed this time.
It took a while for me to understand the complicated terms since I dropped out from school a while ago.
I scoffed the first time.
Then the second and then the third before I threw the paper in the air.
I didn't care where it landed as I glared at the man before me. Hulk let out a grunt as he moved around.
I wanted to keep my eyes on him but I had to choose my poison so I picked his boss. Hulk wouldn't make a move without his instruction.
I was bewildered by how calm and well dressed he was just to commit usury.
“You're a f*****g loan shark,” I spat out clenching my fist when he let out a chuckle.
“I'm far away from that.”
My eyes narrowed when he asked about my decision.
“I'm not signing it,” I replied stiffly.
He nodded with a sigh and seemed to stare into space for a while before he commanded, “Dip her.”
My eyes went wide as my heart started to beat fast. It didn't take more than just one move for hulk to turn me around.
“Wait. Wait. Wait,” I cried out and just as my nose kissed the water, hulk stopped.
I almost let out a breath of relief when I realised that I wasn't still out of this.
“Let's talk this out in a civil manner,” I said slowly, hiding my shaky hands.
The man let out a low chuckle, ribbing his hand across his chin.
“There's nothing civil here including how you scammed one of my men.”
There was no escaping this.
“But we can make it civil,” I tried to convince him and waited for a reply that never came.
My eyes went to my bag that was close to the boss. If only there was a way to get to it.
“Why do I have to pay interest fee, emotional distress fee, expenses fee and…” I trailed off, not remembering the rest.
I nervously looked at hulk when he moved a bit and relaxed too fast.
Turns out that he saw it coming after all. “Dip her.”
I let out a shriek as I tried to fight hulk but my shoulder ended up getting dislocated.
I cried out in pain as I writhed on the floor while my captor sat there with no ounce of concern.
“Snap it,” he suddenly said and my eyes went wide in surprise.
What were they snapping? When hulk started to move closer to me, i stopped my drama and tried to run away but he grabbed my foot.
This was really the end for me. I thought I was going to die from drowning but I guess it was actually from my neck being snapped.
I sucked in my breath and closed my eyes, hoping he would be quick enough. I should have listened to grandma when she told me to stop scamming the neighbours.
Maybe it would have stopped me from being a professional and I wouldn't have scam-
A pop and then a wave of relief hit me after the sound. Hulk stepped away and I slowly opened my eyes while wondering why I was still in this place and not hell.
Even though this place was hell itself.
My shoulder didn't hurt anymore and that was when I finally understood the command.
“Could you please be less vague with your orders?” I said, almost in tears.
It was a relief that I still had a few seconds to live.
“Will you sign it now?” the man asked with a smile playing on his lips.
I didn't like it. It felt dangerous yet it looked like he was amused.
He was definitely a masochist? Sadist? I didn't really know the right word.
Grandma doesn't know.
Grandma… I couldn't live with her even though I loved my carefree life. Also, the last thing I wanted was for Nico to turn out just like me.
I was sure that I couldn't pay this man up but that could be sorted out later. I nodded slowly and accepted the lightweight paper which suddenly seemed heavy.
‘Your recklessness will put you in trouble,’ Grandma always yelled and now it has done just that.
Just as I was about to accept a lifetime of debt, the boss said, “You're expected to pay twenty million immediately.”
The pen hit the tiled floor with a click as I glared at him. He didn’t really think I had that much money, right? If I did, I wouldn't be scamming the wealthy.
He must have noticed my disbelief and said, “You have another option though.”
Hulk accepted another paper but this one was different, including the fonts.
I suspiciously accepted, keeping my eyes on both of them as I waited for a slip up in their facial expression but it never came.
I read through the terms of the contract that made my confusion increase with each line:
Party B must ensure that the products are delivered safely.
Failure to deliver from Party B would lead to death.
My blood went cold at that term and I gulped loudly before I continued.
I read through the whole contract but the “product” wasn't stated. Not even once. The hidden fact made my skin itch.
I didn't like this even though I had no idea.
“What is the product?” I asked him carefully.
The boss didn't reply for a while as if he was contemplating. Hulk on the other hand stiffened and that was when I knew that indeed, I wasn't going to like wherever this was heading.
Then with a straight face, he finally gave me the reply I feared.
“Drugs.”
