Dangerous Feelings

Kira couldn’t sleep. Not after what Kieran said. Not after the way he looked at her. The room was silent except for the crackling fire near the far wall, but her mind refused to rest. Every time she closed her eyes, she remembered the heat in his voice when he said: They’ll have to go through me first. Why would the Alpha care that much? Kira sat near the window wrapped in one of the blankets she found on the bed, staring out at the dark forest beyond the mansion walls. Moonlight spilled across her skin while uneasiness twisted in her stomach. Something inside her felt… awake. Stronger. Wild. A quiet knock interrupted her thoughts. Before she could answer, the door opened. Kieran stepped inside. Her heartbeat immediately betrayed her. He had changed into a black shirt and loose dark pants, his damp hair falling slightly over his forehead like he had just showered. Without the heavy Alpha jacket and ceremonial clothing, he somehow looked even more dangerous. And unfairly attractive. Kira looked away quickly. “You should be resting,” he said. “You keep saying that like I’m dying.” His lips twitched slightly. “You nearly did.” The room fell quiet again. Kieran’s eyes slowly scanned over her face, almost like he was checking she was truly okay. The intensity of his attention made warmth creep into her cheeks. “You’re staring again,” Kira muttered. “And you’re nervous again.” “I’m not nervous.” A low chuckle left his throat. Kira hated how much she liked that sound. Kieran walked toward her slowly until he stood directly beside the window. His shoulder brushed hers lightly, and the contact sent a sharp wave of heat through her body. She froze. He noticed. Of course he noticed. His gray eyes darkened slightly. “You feel it too.” Kira frowned. “Feel what?” “The bond.” Her stomach tightened instantly. “No.” “Yes.” Kira stepped away from him immediately. “That’s impossible.” But even saying the words felt weak. Because deep down… she knew something had changed between them after her shift. The air itself felt different around Kieran now. Heavy. Addictive. Dangerous. “You’re my Alpha,” she said carefully. “That’s all.” For the first time, something possessive flashed across Kieran’s face. “That’s not all.” The tension in the room became suffocating. Kira’s pulse raced as he slowly moved closer again. “You should stay away from me,” she whispered. “Why?” “Because I don’t know what I am yet.” Kieran stopped directly in front of her. Close enough that she could feel his warmth. Close enough to lose focus. His gaze dropped briefly to her lips before returning to her eyes. “I’m not afraid of you, Kira.” Her breath caught. Nobody had ever said that to her before. Not gently. Not like this. For one dangerous second, neither of them moved. Then Kieran lifted his hand slowly and brushed a strand of hair away from her face. The touch was soft. Far too soft for a man like him. Kira’s breath shook slightly. And Kieran noticed that too. A dark hunger flickered briefly in his eyes before he stepped back suddenly, jaw tightening like he was fighting himself. “You should sleep,” he said roughly. Then he turned and walked toward the door. “Kieran.” He paused. Kira hesitated before speaking quietly. “Why are you helping me?” For a long moment, he said nothing. Then he looked back at her with an expression she couldn’t understand. “Because,” he said softly, “I think the moon gave you to me for a reason.”
