Emily's heart raced as she stared at Thomas, the world around her seeming to come to a standstill. The tension was palpable, the anticipation unbearable. Finally, Thomas took a deep breath and began to speak.
"Emily, the truth is... your family has a history with werewolves."
Emily blinked, the words not quite registering. "What? Werewolves? Thomas, this isn't funny."
"I'm not joking, Emily," Thomas said earnestly. "Your family's lineage is intertwined with werewolves, and it’s been kept a secret for generations. The woman you saw me with—her name is Lydia—she came to warn me that something is about to happen, something that involves you."
Emily’s mind reeled. "This is insane. Why didn’t anyone tell me?"
"Your parents wanted to protect you," Sarah interjected softly. "They thought if you didn’t know, you could live a normal life. But things are changing, and you need to know the truth."
"Changing how?" Emily asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Thomas squeezed her hands. "There are werewolves in Willowbrook. They've lived among us in peace for years, but recently, tensions have been rising. Lydia believes that your lineage makes you a target. There are factions that might want to use you, or worse, harm you."
Emily pulled her hands away, her head spinning. "This is too much. Why now? Why didn’t you tell me before?"
Thomas looked pained. "I didn’t want to burden you with this right after our engagement. I was trying to find a way to keep you safe."
"And what about you, Sarah?" Emily asked, turning to her friend. "How long have you known?"
Sarah looked down, guilt written all over her face. "I found out a few weeks ago. I wanted to tell you, but I didn't know how. I thought Thomas should be the one to explain."
Emily took a step back, feeling betrayed. "So, everyone knew but me? You both lied to me!"
"We didn’t lie," Thomas said quickly. "We were trying to protect you. Please, Emily, you have to understand."
"I don’t know what to believe anymore," Emily said, shaking her head. "I need some time to think."
She turned and walked away, leaving Thomas and Sarah standing by the river. The weight of their revelations bore down on her, each step feeling heavier than the last. Emily’s thoughts were a whirlwind of confusion and betrayal. How could her entire life have been built on secrets and lies?
Emily wandered through the village, her mind racing. She ended up at the old library, a place where she had always found solace. As she entered, the musty scent of ancient books and worn wooden furniture greeted her. She made her way to a secluded corner and sank into a plush armchair.
As she sat there, the weight of everything crashed down on her. She had just agreed to marry the man of her dreams, and now her world was unraveling. The image of Lydia and Thomas flashed in her mind, reigniting the fear and confusion she felt earlier. What if there was more to this than they were telling her?
Emily closed her eyes, taking a deep breath. She needed answers. Maybe there were clues hidden somewhere in the library. Her family had deep roots in Willowbrook—perhaps there were records or books that could shed light on this werewolf lineage.
She stood up and made her way to the local history section. Hours passed as she sifted through dusty tomes and faded documents. Just when she was about to give up, she found an old leather-bound book tucked away on a high shelf. The title, barely legible, read *The Hidden Histories of Willowbrook*.
Emily opened the book, her hands trembling. The pages were filled with stories of the town’s past, many of which she had never heard before. As she read on, she found a chapter detailing the existence of werewolves and their ties to prominent families in Willowbrook—including her own.
The book described how her ancestors had made a pact with a powerful werewolf clan to protect the town from external threats. In return, the clan would live among them in peace. However, it also mentioned a prophecy about a descendant who would have the power to either save or doom them all.
Emily’s heart pounded as she read the prophecy. Could she be that descendant? What did this mean for her future? And why were these secrets kept from her?
As she pondered these questions, she heard the library door creak open. She looked up to see Lydia standing there, her expression serious yet kind.
"Lydia," Emily said, closing the book. "You have some explaining to do."
Lydia nodded, walking over to sit across from Emily. "I know this is overwhelming, but I’m here to help you understand. Your parents made sacrifices to keep you safe, but now it’s time for you to learn the truth."
"Why now?" Emily asked, frustration tinging her voice. "Why couldn’t I have known before?"
"Because," Lydia said softly, "the prophecy is coming to pass, and you are at the center of it. You have a choice to make, Emily—one that will determine the fate of Willowbrook and everyone you love."
Emily’s eyes widened. "What choice?"
Lydia’s gaze was steady. "You must choose between embracing your heritage and the power it brings, or rejecting it and risking everything. The werewolves are divided, and your decision will tip the balance."
Emily felt a shiver run down her spine. She was just an ordinary girl—or so she thought. Now, she faced an unimaginable decision, one that could change the course of her life and the lives of everyone in Willowbrook.
As Lydia’s words sank in, Emily realized that her journey was only beginning. She had to confront her fears, uncover the full truth, and find the strength within herself to make the right choice.
The fate of Willowbrook rested on her shoulders, and Emily knew she couldn’t turn back now.
