CHAPTER 3

PATRICK*** As I sat there in my office, I heard a knock; “come in,” I responded. “Should I come in, Sir?” Ms. Omma, the human Resource Manager, asked hesitantly as she partially opened the door. Only her face was visible. “Sure, come in,” I softly responded. “Thank you, sir,” she said as she closed the door behind her. “Please take your seat,” I said, gesturing for her to take a seat. “Oh, thank you, sir,” she stammered. “How may I help you, Ms. Omma?” I asked, placing both my hands on the table. “Well sir, Mr. Sam is unwell, and there is a lady who applied for an internship, so I do not know if she can occupy his position as a finance manager,” she stated abruptly. “She has no experience, right?” I asked, raising an eyebrow questionably. She shrugged and said, “Well, she has good grades, and she is hoping she can acquire some percentage of experience from here.” “I do not think that position is suitable for someone who totally has no experience. Finances have to be well handled; otherwise, poor management of the financial position will cost the company.” “I understand, Sir, but let us give her a try. Let us see what she can do in two weeks.” I sighed and said, “I will have to be her supervisor. Let her report for work tomorrow morning.” “Tomorrow, Sir,” her eyes widened in shock. “Yes, tomorrow, anything wrong?” I asked, unable to understand her reaction. “Her acceptance letter states that she will report here on Monday, the following Monday. So it is going to be an emergency if we call her right away,” she abruptly responded. “Well, arrange transport, and if she does not have any accommodation ready, she can stay in my apartment with me,” I said, unsure of why I had to offer accommodation to someone I had never met, someone I never knew. Her mouth widened as though she was about to swallow a big fish. “What is the matter?” I asked, surprised at her reaction. “I will call her to inform her of the matter at hand. Excuse me, Sir,” she said, then she left. No sooner had she left, then James, best friend, stepped in. “Look who is back!” James shouted as he walked towards me. James and I have been friends since we were children. We grew up together, supporting each other in every movement. For James, he had always been louder than I had been. I have been a quiet, calm person who could barely yell. I loved silent. James loved noise, but we were very compatible with each other. “Come on, you are making noise,” I interrupted, not wanting to hear his noise. “Of course, that is the point; I missed you, my guy,” he said, opening his hands for a hug. “Hahaha, no, I am not doing that. I am not going to hug you,” I said playfully. “Hahaha, you are crazy,” he laughed, and then he took his seat. “Before I hear about your journey, I offered accommodation to a lady I do not know,” I said. “Hahaha, are you in love?” he teased. “Come on, I do not even know her, so how would I fall in love with her,” my expression turned serious as I responded. “What do you imply? You mean you have never met her, like you have totally never seen her?” he curiously asked. “Exactly.” “Someone will fall in love,” he teased again. “Come on, I am not in for that,” I responded as I threw a paper towards him playfully. We were interrupted by a phone that chimed. “Good afternoon, Mr. Royd?” I greeted. “Afternoon Mr. Patrick Yab, there is a project that is ongoing, the one we discussed earlier,” he responded. I groaned to my forgetfulness, “I will be there today. Forgive me, I had completely forgotten about it,” I sighed heavily. “Will be looking forward to seeing you,” he said, and then the call ended. “You are going somewhere?” James anxiously asked. “Yes, I have to go to Choma town; there is a project ongoing-donations to the orphanage. I will see you when I am back,” I said as I got my car keys and left the office. ………… “Where are we heading to?” the driver inquired. Being a billionaire, it was not safe to travel a long distance alone. I had two bodyguards with me, each carrying pistols on the backs of their jackets. They both wore black suits except the driver who was wearing a sky blue shirt and navy blue trousers, as the law required of all drivers. “Choma town,” I responded as the first guard opened the door for me, so I could enter. We drove as fast as possible because time was running out. Five hours later, we arrived in Choma town, a small town surrounded by a massive number of streetlights along all the roads. When I looked around through my window, numerous business activities were taking place, and they really grabbed my attention. Business people were well engaged in their businesses. As I observed, I thought about grabbing a business chance in order to expand my company. As we drove, we eventually reached the edge of the town where vegetables were being sold. As we kept moving, my phone rang, it was Mr. Royd. "Hello, Sir, I think I just saw you," he spoke from the other end. "Oh really? How come I did not see you?" I asked, signaling the driver to stop the car. "Just hold on there, my driver will pick you up. Send your location," I continued. "Sure, Mr.Yab. I hope your driver can recognize me. I am standing beside the Pep Store, wearing a gray suit," he said before he hung up. "Leave me here, I want to stretch my legs," I said to the driver as I got out of the car. "I will remain with you sir," said the guard, Mr. Limson, had been my personal guard ever since some strangers at a particular function attempted to attack me. Fortunately, that day, he was there, and he warned me to be careful. It was impressing how he had shown care, and so, since then, I decided to have bodyguards around me, making Mr. Limson is my personal bodyguard. "I do not want to attract attention. I will stand here by myself. Just go ahead with them; you will meet me here," I said. "Alright sir." Then they left. I stood there beside the road watching people moving in and out of the market. Others would pass with their children holding hands. I loved how they related to each other. As I stood there, my phone rang, it was Mr. Limson. "Hello Limson, what is the matter?" I asked without hesitation. "Sir, I am calling to inform you that there is traffic here, and it will take a bit of time to return to where you are," he abruptly responded. "Okay," I answered before I hung up. As I stood there waiting for them, a flowery fresh scent provoked my nose. I tilted my head to the other side to see who it was; my heart skipped a beat when my eyes fell on an amazing beauty that I had never seen before. Standing there in a white flared dress made her look like an angel. I could not take my eyes off her. As I kept glancing at her admirably, she turned to the other side where I stood, and I pulled off my glance at her. As embarrassment hit me, I forcefully pushed back the strands of hair on my face as I tucked the other hand in my pocket. I was saved from the discomfort when my phone rang again; it was Limson. "Sir, crossover to the other side if you do not mind," he stammered. "Okay," I responded so that I could not lose sight of the lady who stood beside me. When I turned to her, she was gone. My eyes searched, but I could not see her anywhere.
