CHAPTER ONE

(Hazel's pov) All my life I'd anticipated this day. Today I'd be completing twenty and finally leave my teenage hood. Funny enough it also marks the day I leave for school because Months ago a letter had came in that I passed the scholarship exam and toping it all I'd gotten into a really rare prestigious university. It was like a dream come true. The sound of claw wiping the ground drew my attention and I glanced down at a pair of green eyes purring on the carpet by my bedside. "Morning Rooney". I smiled at the little kitten as she pulled and yawned on the plush carpet stretching out a little. Rooney was Grandma sage's pet. She'd bought it from a neighbor who's kid, the owner had died tragically and then grandma had brought it into the house. "Meow" she purred again. "I guess hard work does pay" I sighed gently rubbing her fur as she closed her eyes taking in the feel of my hand on her. "Hazel!" I hear my mum called from downstairs. I groaned rolling off my tiny bed as I crawled across my room to the tiny compartment that serve as my bathroom. "Hazel!!" She called again. "In the washroom!!" I yelled back as I quickly turn on the shower letting the water down into my skin. I hurriedly wash my hair also scraping my hairy legs with a razor. By the time I finished bathing it was almost 9:0clock. I wrapped a towel round my body as I walked over to the huge standing mirror close to the entrance of my bathroom. Okay. What am about to do might sound crazy. It's something I learned from a education seminar back in high school. Although it may sound awkward and childish but when I remember why we had to move from east side down to the north just to get closer to school, I wrap up every other thoughts of rebel and focus on my goal, which was the main reason why I had no boyfriend or friends. Now I stare at my messy reflection of a bird nest hair as water dripped down my face. Sighing I recited the words out ,"My name is hazel gale, My plan is to achieve my goal of being a business owner, have my own company. Then get married and have two pup, three or four.... whatever". I threw my hands up and walked back to my room where I slipped on my best clothes which was a long pleated blue skirt underneath a black blouse with long sleeves. "Hazel!!" Mum's voice rang up again. "Coming" I said sprinting through the hallway at the same time bonding my hair in a messy ponytail. "Let her be it's her day." I heard grandma sage whined. "Cut it mother, its 10am already" mum said, her tiny firm figure running frantically round the kitchen in preparation of breakfast. I wouldn't blame my mum, when the letter came in , she has been nervous and the same time anxious that her only child had gotten into college. Thank goodness I didn't have to drag my luggage down the stairs that would've gotten her jogging up to me. "I'm here now" I announced to the bickering women. "Gosh took your so long to get down here, have you packed your bags?" Mum asked while she rummaged through her handbag in search of her car keys. "Yes". "Your boots?" "All done." "Good let's get going.." she said but stopped when she glanced at me. "Honey, can you take a minute to fix your hair properly while I wait for you in the car." She sighed kissing my cheek briefly as she walked out. "More like her father". Grandma sighed adjusting her glasses. Nodding I walk back to the hallway. I knew mum wasn't going to overlook my hair. The fact that I'd only washed it and didn't put a comb through it was reason enough to send me back of course we're not moving if I don't look presentable, she'll make sure of that. Well that gave me enough time to rethink how life in college would be like. The shrilling thought of living alone with only a roommate to share with. With my present life, will I even make friends? Questions without answer pop through my head as I walk down the stairs and hug my grandma from behind. "I'm gonna miss you granny". I pecked her already wrinkled cheek as she hugged me back muttering "bless you" in English and some other words in Spanish which says "don't forget to bring back a rich handsome son in law". She winked. "Ew" I scrunched my nose in unbelief. Did I tell you my grandmother can be a little worldly and ungodly unlike my mum?
