Episode 2: The Truth Behind the Night

773 Words
"Are you the patient's parents?" The doctor's voice cut cleanly through the heavy silence of the hospital corridor. Calm. Firm. Unavoidable. "Yes…" the woman whispered. Her hands were clenched tightly together, as if letting go would make her collapse completely. "Then please… listen carefully," the doctor continued, adjusting his glasses. "We've received the test results." The air shifted. Heavier. Colder. "Your daughter has sustained an injury to the back of her head. It is not minor." The woman's breath caught. "It could have been caused by a severe fall…" He paused. "…or by someone beating her." "What?!" her voice shattered instantly. Her entire body trembled. "Who would do such a thing to my daughter?!" she cried. "Who could hurt her like this…?" No answer came. Only silence. The doctor let the moment pass before speaking again. "Your daughter was found unconscious near a shop, close to an intersection. According to reports, she had been lying there for some time before anyone noticed." The father's jaw tightened. "The young man who brought her here… is the one who called the ambulance." A quiet tension slipped between them. "Mr. Jae Sung. Mrs. Sun He," the doctor continued, more serious now, "What was your daughter doing alone at night?" The question lingered. Heavy. Uncomfortable. "Our daughter trains," the father said finally, forcing steadiness into his voice. "She practices taekwondo. She must have been returning from training." There was pride in his tone. But fear swallowed it quickly. "She's not the type to be easily overpowered…" The doctor exhaled slowly. "That may be true. But judging by the pattern of her injuries…" He hesitated. "…it's possible she was attacked by more than one person." Silence fell. Thick. Crushing. The woman's lips parted — but no sound came out. Her mind refused to accept it. "We've already informed the police," the doctor added. "An investigation has begun." The father lowered his head. His fists tightened. Someone had done this. Someone had hurt his daughter. And he had no idea who. After a moment, the doctor spoke again — softer this time. "The good news is… her condition is stable. She will regain consciousness soon." Tears filled the woman's eyes. "And her memory…" he continued carefully, "…should return gradually." Hope flickered. Small. Fragile. "But…" That single word froze everything. "It will take time." Time. The word echoed painfully. "My poor daughter…" Sun Hee whispered, her voice breaking. "She's still just a student… only sixteen…" Her sobs filled the empty corridor. The father placed a hand on her shoulder — though he himself felt just as broken. Time passed. Minutes. Or hours. No one could tell. The corridor remained cold, distant… filled with quiet footsteps and muted voices. Then— "Hello… I'm here." A young man's voice broke through the silence. The woman slowly lifted her head. "You've come, my son…" she said weakly. He stepped closer. "Yes, Mom… are you okay?" Concern filled his eyes. But beneath it— Exhaustion. The kind that comes from carrying too much, for too long. "How could I be…?" she whispered. Pain lingered in every word. "I'm sorry… I came as soon as I could." "It's hard for you too…" she continued softly. "Your studies… and taking care of us…" A mother's guilt. Quiet. Heavy. "Mom," he said firmly, "You've never been a burden. And you never will be." Simple words. But real. She smiled faintly. "Thank you, my son…" For a moment, warmth returned. "If only your brother were like you…" Silence. A shadow crossed his face. Something unspoken. Something buried. He looked away. Avoiding something only he could feel. "… Where is my brother?" he asked finally. A pause. "Hasn't he come home?" The woman's expression darkened again. "No…" "He hasn't." His eyes narrowed slightly. Something wasn't right. "Where could he be…?" he murmured. But even as he asked— Something inside him shifted. A feeling. Uneasy. Cold. Creeping slowly into his chest. It didn't make sense. There was no proof. No reason. And yet— When the thought of his brother surfaced… His heartbeat quickened. Something was wrong. Deeply wrong. A thought flashed through his mind. Sharp. Dangerous. Unwanted. Could it be…? No. He shook his head. Refusing it. Rejecting it. But the feeling didn't disappear. It stayed. Heavy. Persistent. Like a truth hiding in the dark… Waiting to be found. And he wasn't ready for it. 👉 What do you think… Is his brother hiding something?
