chapter 39

706 Words
The days unfolded with a surprising calm. Shelly’s days were split between work, legal meetings, and parenting, but for the first time in years, she felt supported. Spencer was there, whether it was helping Shaina with homework, picking up groceries, or just being someone she could vent to at the end of the day. Their relationship was growing steadily, grounded in trust and mutual understanding. One evening, Spencer arrived at Shelly’s house carrying a bouquet of sunflowers. Shaina squealed in delight and ran to greet him, wrapping her small arms around his legs. “For me?” Shaina asked, eyeing the flowers. Spencer laughed and knelt down to her level. “These are actually for your mom. But don’t worry, I brought you something too.” He pulled a small bag of gummy bears from his pocket, and Shaina’s face lit up. Shelly appeared in the doorway, her heart fluttering at the sight of Spencer standing there with sunflowers in one hand and her daughter beaming in the other. It was a moment she never thought she’d have again—a man who made her and Shaina feel cared for without strings attached. “Spencer,” Shelly said, accepting the flowers. “You’re spoiling her.” “She deserves it,” he replied with a wink before turning to Shaina. “And so does your mom.” Shelly felt a blush creep up her cheeks. “You didn’t have to do this.” “I wanted to,” Spencer said simply, his gaze steady. “And besides, it’s movie night. I thought I’d bring a little something extra.” --- Later, after Shaina had fallen asleep mid-movie, Shelly and Spencer sat on the couch, the room bathed in the soft glow of the TV. Shelly’s head rested against Spencer’s shoulder, her fingers absently tracing patterns on his arm. “I’ve been thinking,” Spencer began, his voice low. “About everything you’re going through with Veer.” Shelly tensed slightly but didn’t pull away. “What about it?” “I know you’re handling it well, but you don’t have to do it alone. I want to be more involved, if you’ll let me. Not just with Veer, but with everything. You and Shaina… you’ve become my family, Shelly.” Her breath caught. The word family echoed in her mind, filling a space she hadn’t realized was so empty. It scared her how much she wanted it, how much she wanted him to stay. “Spencer…” She hesitated, unsure of how to articulate the storm of emotions inside her. “That means a lot. But it’s not just me you’d be committing to—it’s Shaina too. And Veer isn’t going to make things easy.” “I know,” he said, turning to look at her. His eyes were steady, unwavering. “But I’m not afraid of Veer or anything else that comes with being with you. I love you, Shelly. Both of you.” The words hung in the air, filling the silence with a warmth that made Shelly’s chest tighten. Tears pricked her eyes, but they weren’t born of sadness or fear—they were the result of something she hadn’t felt in a long time: hope. “I love you too,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “I’m just scared of losing you.” “You won’t,” Spencer said firmly, cupping her face in his hands. “I’m here for the long haul.” For the first time, Shelly believed him. She leaned in, letting his kiss chase away the remnants of her doubts. In his arms, she found a safety she hadn’t known she could feel again. --- Meanwhile, Veer was not staying idle. He had been reaching out to people who might testify against Shelly, trying to build a case to regain custody of Shaina. His arrogance made him believe he could manipulate the situation, as he always had in the past. But this time, Shelly wasn’t alone. The legal battle ahead loomed large, but Shelly felt stronger than ever. With Spencer by her side, she was ready to fight for the life she had rebuilt—and for the happiness she finally dared to claim.
