Ember’s POV Back to my room, I kept pacing about, from one edge to the other. My heart wavered, thoughts occupied by what I had just been told by the alpha prince. I felt like I was burning in the flames. My gasps came in ragged breaths. How do I handle this? What could I do to stop this? Nothing. Just nothing. All I have to do now is to pray for my mother's recovery. Or should she just stay that way? Will it end everything? I shook my head. No matter what, my mum needs to survive. Even if she committed the crime, I believe she did it for a reason. She can't just poison an Alpha king knowing what came with it. What if the alpha king wanted to force himself on her and she did that to save herself? What if the late alpha threatened her in one way or the other, and that was her only option to save herself from his trap? My mother is so upright that I can't believe she did that so easily. She might even be blackmailed. The knock at the door made me flinch. I wasn't expecting anyone. “Lady, your dinner is here.” I glanced at the table where the initial meal had been placed. I hadn't even touched it, and I didn't have the appetite to. But, I recalled sometime when I lost my appetite at home and almost died of hunger at midnight. Recalling that, I took the dinner from the servant at the doorpost without letting her in. But seconds later, she knocked again. This time, I was frightened that something had happened. “I could take away the previous dishes, Lady.” She bowed, making me shudder. I glanced at the table and shook my head. “Don't worry, I'll get it when I'm done with the meal.” She said no more words and left, but something bothered me about her side look. Was not eating an offence? Was it against the rules of the contract? I had signed the contract before leaving the alpha's office, and anxiety couldn't let me go through it carefully. My hands were even trembling as I put down my signature. There, I saw a side of him I never imagined for once. That instant, my wolf growled in me, snapping me out of my thoughts. I hurried towards the table and uncovered the previous meal immediately, and without even thinking, I began forcing it down my throat. All thanks to the moon goddess, the meal wasn't so much. It had been prepared lightly for a visitor, so I was done with it in minutes and drank down the bottled water that had run out of ice. Exhaling a deep breath, I dropped the empty tray on the floor and placed the new one on top. I was certain I would still get hungry later and would have to take it. Thankfully, my mind was at ease for some time after taking the meal. I had to hasten and freshen up in case the alpha prince sends for me. I took one of the nightwear in the wardrobe and had it on. It fitted me so much like I was named when making it. Later on, feeling idle, I decided to put a call through Hannah. I had missed her call and didn't want to return it until my mind was settled. “Are you that hostile, Ember? Where the f**k are you?” She roared at me the moment she picked up. I couldn't help but chuckle. She was so dramatic. “Uhm, baby girl, I'm with my new man.” “You're going nuts.” She slammed angrily, her voice husky. “Some men came to the clinic and took your mum, and no matter how I asked, they didn't say a thing to me. Even the nurse and doctor in charge of your mother went dumb.” My lips stretched into a polite smile. “That's the handwork of my new boyfriend.” “What are you saying? You went for a job interview and not some boyfriend hunting.” “Yeah! And the CEO became my boyfriend. Right now, I'm in his palace. He's the alpha prince of the Stark Furs Pack.” I giggled, tasting bitterness in my throat. Having a boyfriend that resides in our remote town would have been better than what I had just gotten myself into. She cleared her throat as if I hadn't been hearing her. “I can't believe this. What about…. “We broke up already.” I cut her short, knowing about who she was about to ask. “Do not talk about him any longer. My mother will be taken care of…” “Tell me the truth, Ember. That alpha prince can't literally choose you as his girlfriend after everything we've heard about him.” I sighed. She's just so smart. “Until we meet, then I'll explain. For now, return whatever money you borrowed. There's no need for it.” I said to her, my chest heaving. “Alright! I got to do something. Take care and look after your mom until we meet. I'll come to see her soon.” I smiled. “Bye.” The call ended and I threw my cell phone to the bed. How fast she was to catch up that there was no way I could be the Alpha Prince's girlfriend with my rank. She had believed about my relationship with Uston a bit but had as well told me that it wouldn't last too long because of differences. And just like she said, it happened. If I had known, I'd have ended things a long time instead of getting a bleeding heart because of him. I lay on the bed, arms spread apart, eyes fixated on the chandelier positioned in the middle of the room. “Mum please survive. If you do, I'll believe whatever you tell me about this and stand by you. It doesn't matter how long it will be, but I won't let you die.” I muttered to myself, fingers squeezing the bed cover. Then, a strong scent hit my nostrils, one I hadn't inhaled before. It was so strong and overwhelming that it alerted my wolf. I sat up, glancing around. Was it the meal? It hadn't released such a scent since I brought it in. Was there something here to produce such a scent? Having thought of that, I stood up, trying to trace where the scent came from. It was becoming more intoxicating and strong, filling my nostrils like I'd only survive with it. My wolf whimpered and began chuffing. I found myself moving towards the door where my wolf led me, as we were searching for this scent together. It called on us. It alerted us. I hadn't felt this way for once. My palm grabbed the doorknob and I drew it open. Stepping into the corridor, my wolf began woofing. Mate! Mate!! I stiffened, staring back at the man who was already in his pajamas, holding a glass that contained an alcohol which he sipped from before me. He knew. Doesn't he? Fuck! We are mates! I've longed for this moment, but not with someone I didn't love. I wanted to be mates with someone who would cherish me, not a rival. He took two steps closer, putting down the glass from his lips. “Mate!! So it's you.” My heart dropped into my belly as I heard him say that. Was it that funny? He emptied the glass he was holding and tightened his grip around it, eyes flickering like he was going to strike me down with it. I couldn't even fathom how my wolf felt at that moment. Happy? Sad? Confused? We had wanted this, but not like this. And before I could hold it back, the words slipped my lips, “Reject me, please….or I'll do it, and you would accept it.” He scoffed at me, cooking his head to the side, “To the minor room….” Was his response. Chills shoot all over me. My body went rigid.
