WASHOUT (To complete this collection, here’s a quirky tale about some unusual visitors who suddenly arrive in an old lonely house in the country.) It had been a rough week and today, the last working day, was even worse. Jim’s returning home train had been late. It was beginning to get dark, his briefcase was feeling heavier and he felt irritated at knowing he still had a couple of miles more to walk. He also had another reason to be annoyed. As arranged by telephone earlier in the day, his wife had promised faithfully to pick him up in their car at the station; but she was not there. When he had tried to call her on her mobile phone there was no answer, and even though she often did forget to switch it back on, he became concerned.
