The Alpha’s Claim

### Chapter 4: The Alpha’s Claim The silence in the arena is heavy, suffocating, broken only by the low hum of electricity in the overhead lights and the frantic rhythm of my own heart. Kaelen stands on the other side of the reinforced steel bars, his winter-blue eyes locked onto mine. Five years ago, those eyes held warmth, tenderness, and a desperate promise of a future we both knew was a pipe dream. Now, they hold the cold, unyielding power of an Alpha King. "Your woman?" The word tastes like copper and dust on my tongue. I step closer to the bars, the heavy iron chains around my wrists clanking against the concrete floor. The cold metal speaks to my power, a faint vibration humming through my skin, but I force the ferrokinesis back. Revealing the full extent of what I can do right now would be suicide. "I am no one’s prize, Kaelen. Least of all yours." A slow, deliberate smirk touches his lips, but it doesn't reach his eyes. He lifts one hand, placing a broad palm against the steel mesh separating us. The air around his skin shimmers with heat, the raw aura of his wolf vibrating against the metal. "You always were bad at lying to yourself, Elara. You think those chains make you a prisoner? You think this cage keeps you safe from me?" "It keeps *you* away from me," I snap, taking another step forward until I am standing just inches from his hand, separated only by the woven wire. "Which makes it the safest place in this damn city." Kaelen lets out a low rumble from deep within his chest—a sound that isn't entirely human. It vibrates straight through the metal floor and into the soles of my feet, lighting a dangerous fire along my nerve endings. "You haven't changed. Still hiding behind armor, still putting up walls made of iron and defiance." His gaze drops to my right hand, which I have curled into a tight fist against my side. "Does it still burn?" My breath hitches. He knows. He knows about the scar. "Every single day," I whisper, dropping the sharp edge from my voice for a fraction of a second. "Every time I look at it, I remember the feeling of driving liquid silver into your chest. I remember the sound of your heartbeat fading." "Then remember this, too," Kaelen says, his voice dropping to a harsh, gravelly whisper that seems meant for only me, despite the dead guards and bound mercenaries surrounding the pit. "You didn't kill me, Elara. You forged me." With a sudden, violent motion, Kaelen grips the steel bars with both hands. The muscles in his forearms strain, his knuckles turning white. I expect him to snap the lock or use a key, but instead, the sheer, terrifying force of his Alpha strength manifests. The heavy steel frame groans—a high-pitched screech of metal in agony that resonates deep in my teeth. My ferrokinesis flares instinctively. The metal wants to bend *with* him, submissive to both his physical force and my latent magical pull. I fight the urge to control it, forcing my hands to remain at my sides as Kaelen peels the steel bars apart like paper, creating an opening just wide enough for him to step through. He steps into the pit. The air instantly changes. The scent of rain, ozone, and pine floods my senses, overpowering the stale stench of blood and rust that has filled my lungs for half a decade. My wolf, dormant and starved for years under the suppressing dampeners of the Red Cell Block, stirs in the back of my mind, whining in recognition of her Alpha. *Reject him,* I tell her silently. *He isn't our savior. He's our hunter.* Kaelen closes the distance between us in two long, fluid strides. Before I can draw a breath to react, his hand snaps out, gripping my right wrist. His fingers are searing hot, the heat of his skin contrasting sharply with the freezing cold of the cell. He pulls my hand up between us, turning my palm upward. I try to yank back, but his grip is iron. "Let me go," I growl, feeling the silver scar throb wildly against his touch. "No," Kaelen says softly. His thumb brushes over the jagged, raised silver tissue that spans my palm. A shockwave of heat shoots up my arm, making my knees buckle slightly. He catches me around the waist with his other arm, pulling my body flush against his hard chest. For a second, the entire world shrinks down to the contact points between us—his warm hand holding mine, his broad arm wrapped around my waist, the heavy beat of his heart thumping rhythmically against my ribs. It’s the same beat I thought I had silenced five years ago. "You thought you severed our bond," Kaelen murmurs, his face inches from mine. I can feel the cool breeze of his breath against my lips. "You thought that liquid silver would wipe away what we were. But all it did was lock it in place, Elara. You bound us together in blood and silver." "My father would have slaughtered you!" I shout, anger flaring to mask the terrifying wave of grief and longing crashing over me. "I had to do it! I had to make him think you were dead, that you were nothing! I saved your life!" "And you condemned yourself to a hellhole!" His voice cracks, the composure slipping to reveal the raw, jagged pain underneath. His winter-blue eyes burn with a fierce, unstable light. "You let him put you in chains! You let them throw you in a pit like an animal while I spent five years clawing my way back from the edge of death, thinking you were dead, thinking Viktor had finished you!" We stand there, chest to chest, panting, the ghost of our shared past hanging heavy between us. The anger in his eyes slowly melts into something far more dangerous—a quiet, desperate possessiveness. "Viktor is dead," Kaelen says softly, his thumb continuing to stroke the silver scar on my palm. "I killed him myself three days ago. The empire is gone. The pack is mine. And now, Elara, you are coming home." "Home?" I let out a harsh, bitter laugh. "I don't have a home, Kaelen. I'm a monster to the humans, a freak to the witches, and a threat to the wolves. Look at me!" I shake my cuffed wrists, the iron clanking loudly. "I am a weapon. That's all I've ever been." "Then be my weapon," Kaelen replies instantly, without a single second of hesitation. He leans down, his lips brushing the shell of my ear, sending a shudder straight down my spine. "Or be my Queen. But you will never be a prisoner again." He doesn't wait for my answer. Before I can use my ferrokinesis to turn the iron cuffs into spikes against his chest, Kaelen snaps the heavy chain connecting my wrists with his bare hands as if it were brittle string. The shattered links fall to the concrete floor with a heavy *clatter*. He reaches down, scoops me into his arms before I can strike, and turns toward the shattered cage door. "Put me down!" I snap, striking his chest with my fist. "Make me," he growls low in his throat, a hint of a dark smirk playing on his lips as he carries me out of the pit and toward the surface world I haven't seen in over five years.
