Chapter 2: The Alpha Hunt
I’ve spent five years in these cells. Five years of hell, surviving only on the hope that I could find the loophole in the system and vanish. But now, my father is dead. The Volkov empire is crumbling, and the new Alpha King is making a statement by purging the old regime.
The "buyer" isn't a buyer. I know this because my father's old lieutenant, the man who was supposed to be running this place, is lying face down in a pool of blood at the edge of the fighting pit. The other guards have been disarmed, bound in silver cuffs.
I’m pushed into the pit, and I see him. He stands in the shadows of the mezzanine, overlooking the fighting arena, but the scent of him is overwhelming—like rain and ozone, an Alpha’s presence that makes my skin prickle with a power I shouldn't be feeling.
He steps into the spotlight, and the entire arena holds its breath. He is impossibly tall, broad-shouldered, and clad in all black, the tailored suit a facade for the power that makes the air thrum. But it’s not his presence that steals my breath.
It's the face. The angular jawline. The eyes, winter blue and piercing, looking directly into mine.
"Elara Volkov," his voice, a low rumble that vibrated through my very core. The sound of my name on his tongue feels both familiar and terrifying.
My heart hammers a chaotic rhythm against my ribs. "Kaelen?" I whisper, the word barely a breath. The last time I saw him, I drove silver into his heart. Now, he stands before me, no longer a broken rogue, but the new King. And he is beautiful.
