Meet The Mates

1229 Words
The room had finally gone quiet. Well… As quiet as it could be with three newly bonded couples trying to process everything that had just happened. Remi leaned against Will, still feeling the strange warmth of her awakened wolf. Rae was curled against Trey, her magic humming beneath her skin. Del rested against Elijah, faint golden sparks occasionally flickering across her fingertips. None of them had quite figured out what to do next. Then— Knock. Knock. Knock. Everyone froze. Another knock sounded. “Guys?” Luke’s voice came through the door. Noah called from behind him. “Congratulations!” Rae’s eyes widened. “Oh, no.” Trey raised an eyebrow. “What?” “They know.” A grin spread across Noah’s voice. “We definitely know.” Luke cleared his throat. “And, uh…” A pause. “You might want to get decent.” The three women immediately looked at each other. Then at their mates. Then down at the shirts they were wearing. Remi looked at Will. Rae looked at Trey. Del looked at Elijah. Rae suddenly grinned. “Well…” She grabbed the bottom of Trey’s shirt. “This is mine now.” Trey laughed. “Rae—” She pulled it tighter around herself. “Mate’s shirt.” Remi immediately pointed at Will. “She’s right.” Will looked down at his shirt. Then at Remi. “You’re stealing my shirt too?” Remi smiled. “Absolutely.” She tugged it around herself. “It’s mine now.” Del laughed. “Then I guess I’m stealing Elijah’s.” Elijah looked down at himself. “You three are serious?” “Yes,” the women answered together. Trey shook his head. “I suppose we don’t get those back.” Rae smiled. “Nope.” She looked down proudly at the oversized shirt. “Mate property.” Noah’s voice came through the door. “Are you decent yet?” Rae yelled back. “Define decent!” Luke groaned. “Rae.” “What?” “Please just put clothes on.” “We are!” Trey looked at her. “Technically.” Rae shrugged. “I’m wearing your shirt.” Luke sighed from the hallway. “Elaine and Marcus are on their way.” The laughter stopped. Will’s expression immediately changed. “Our parents?” “Yes,” Luke answered. “They felt the energy shift.” Noah added, “They knew something happened.” Elijah looked toward the door. “They’re coming here now?” Luke laughed. “They’re already on the way.” Trey ran a hand through his hair. “Great.” Rae looked at him. “Why do you look nervous?” “Because my parents are about to meet the woman who hacked my phone.” Rae smiled. “They’ll love me.” Elijah laughed. “I’m sure they will.” Del looked at him. “You’re laughing now.” “I’ve accepted my fate.” Remi smiled. Will looked down at her. “You okay?” She nodded. “Just nervous.” His hand settled gently at her waist. “You don’t have to be.” She looked up at him. “They’re your parents.” “And you’re my mate.” His expression softened. “They’ll know that.” Remi smiled. Before anyone could say anything else, Rae suddenly grabbed Trey’s hand. “Okay.” She looked around. “Everyone decent?” Del glanced down at herself. “Mostly.” Remi laughed. “Same.” Trey shook his head. “We need an actual definition of decent.” Luke knocked again. “Can we come in?” Will looked around. Everyone was covered enough to pass inspection. “Come in.” The door opened. Luke stepped inside first. Noah followed. Both stopped immediately. Luke looked at the three women. Then at the three brothers. Then at the shirts. His eyebrows lifted. Noah grinned. “Oh.” Rae smiled sweetly. “What?” Noah pointed at Trey’s shirt. “That’s definitely Trey’s.” Rae nodded. “Not anymore.” Trey sighed. “She’s claimed it.” Noah laughed. Luke looked at Remi. “And that’s Will’s.” Remi smiled. “Correct.” Luke looked at Del. “And Elijah’s.” Del nodded. “Also correct.” Noah shook his head. “Three Alpha shirts stolen in under five minutes.” Rae shrugged. “Mate privileges.” Luke laughed. “Fair enough.” Will folded his arms. “What did our parents say?” Luke’s expression became more serious. “They felt the shift.” Elijah frowned. “How strong was it?” “Strong enough that they knew something major happened.” Noah nodded. “They said they’re coming to meet their sons’ mates.” The three women exchanged nervous looks. Then Rae broke the silence. “So…” She looked at Remi and Del. “Meeting the future in-laws?” Remi laughed nervously. “Apparently.” Del sighed. “Wonderful.” Trey grinned. “You’ll be fine.” Rae looked at him. “You’re saying that because they’re your parents.” “Yes.” “That doesn’t help.” Elijah laughed. “You’ll like them.” Will looked at Remi. “My mother is going to love you.” Remi raised an eyebrow. “How do you know?” Will’s answer was immediate. “Because I do.” Remi’s heart fluttered. Rae made a gagging sound. “Oh, that’s disgusting.” Trey laughed. “You’re just jealous.” “Of what?” “The romance.” Rae pointed at him. “Don’t start.” Noah looked between all six of them. “You know…” He grinned. “This might be the first time I’ve ever seen the three Alpha brothers this happy.” Luke nodded. “Same.” Will glanced toward the door. Then back at Remi. The mark on her skin was still faintly glowing. His expression softened. Trey looked at Rae’s mark. Elijah looked at Del’s. All three brothers wore the same expression. Pride. Wonder. And something deeper. Their mates were finally awake. And now their parents were coming to meet them. A few minutes later, footsteps sounded in the hallway. Everyone went silent. Rae tugged Trey’s shirt around herself. Remi adjusted Will’s. Del straightened Elijah’s. Trey looked at his brothers. “You ready?” Elijah nodded. Will looked at Remi. “As ready as I’ll ever be.” The door opened. Elaine and Marcus Carter stepped inside. They stopped. Their eyes immediately went to their sons. Then to the three women wearing their sons’ shirts. Then to the glowing marks. Elaine’s hand flew to her mouth. Marcus stared in stunned silence. Elaine whispered, “Oh…” Her eyes filled with emotion. “They finally found their mates.” Will smiled. “Mom. Dad.” Elaine looked at Remi. Then at Rae. Then Del. And somehow, she smiled even wider. “Welcome to the family.” The three women exchanged glances. Rae whispered, “Well…” She looked down at Trey’s shirt. “I guess we’re officially stuck with them.” Trey grinned. “You have no idea.” And somewhere deep inside the Bayou… Three newly awakened bonds pulsed together. Mate. Mate. Mate. The Carter family had just gotten three new daughters. And absolutely nothing about their lives would ever be ordinary again.
