Another Awakening

For several long seconds, nobody spoke. The room was still processing everything. Remi was a werewolf. Rae was a witch. Del was a Phoenix. Three mates. Three awakened powers. Three families suddenly connected in ways none of them had expected. Then Elaine cleared her throat. “There is something else we need to talk about.” Every head turned toward her. Rae immediately narrowed her eyes. “Why does that sound terrifying?” Elaine gave her a small smile. “Because it might be.” Trey frowned. “Mom?” Elaine looked at her three sons. “Your mates went through their heat.” The room went completely silent. Remi’s face immediately turned red. Rae’s eyes widened. Del slowly covered her face. “Oh, no.” Elaine continued. “And they completed their mate bonds during that time.” Will’s expression changed. Trey went still. Elijah’s eyes widened. Elaine folded her hands in front of her. “That means there is a very real possibility that all three of them could already be pregnant.” Silence. Absolute silence. Rae’s mouth fell open. Remi stared at Elaine. Del blinked several times. “Pregnant?” Elaine nodded. “Yes.” Rae immediately looked at Trey. Trey looked back at her. Neither spoke. Then Rae whispered, “Oh my God.” Del looked at Elijah. “You’re kidding.” Elijah slowly shook his head. “I don’t think she is.” Remi looked at Will. Her heart began pounding. “Will…” He took her hand. “We don’t know yet.” Elaine nodded. “Exactly. It’s a possibility, not a certainty.” Rae paced three steps across the room. “Okay.” She turned around. “Okay.” She paced back. “I can deal with a witch awakening.” Another turn. “I can deal with visions.” Another step. “I can deal with hacking an entire werewolf pack.” Trey raised an eyebrow. “Apparently.” Rae pointed at him. “Don’t.” She continued pacing. “But a baby?” Del started laughing nervously. “Rae…” “I am not emotionally prepared to be responsible for a tiny human.” Trey smiled. “Technically, if it’s ours—” “Don’t finish that sentence.” Trey wisely stopped. Del looked at Elijah. “So you’re saying there could be a tiny Phoenix running around?” Elijah smiled. “A very powerful one.” Del stared at him. “That is not comforting.” Elijah chuckled. Remi hadn’t said anything. She was still holding Will’s hand. She looked down at their intertwined fingers. “A baby…” Will squeezed her hand. “We don’t know yet.” “I know.” Her voice was barely above a whisper. “But…” She looked up at him. “What would you think?” Will’s expression softened. “If you’re asking whether I’d want a child with you…” He paused. “I’d want anything that came from you.” Remi’s eyes immediately filled with tears. “Will.” He brushed his thumb across her hand. “But I don’t want you worrying until we know.” Remi nodded. Rae stopped pacing. “Wait.” Everyone looked at her. Rae pointed at the three brothers. “There’s another reason this is possible.” Trey sighed. “I know what you’re about to say.” Rae looked around the room. “Remember what these three did?” Del raised an eyebrow. “What did they do?” Rae looked at Elaine. “They basically declared that no male was allowed anywhere near us.” Elaine smiled knowingly. “And that announcement traveled through the entire pack.” Trey looked embarrassed. “We were protecting our mates.” Rae crossed her arms. “You three practically issued a territorial lockdown.” Elijah nodded. “I did.” Del stared at him. “You’re admitting it?” “Yes.” Will looked at Remi. “I wasn’t letting anyone near you.” Remi’s cheeks warmed. “I noticed.” Rae looked at Trey. “You literally told half the pack that any male who got too close to me would answer to you.” Trey shrugged. “They needed to understand.” Rae groaned. “You realize everyone knows now, right?” Luke, standing near the doorway, cleared his throat. “Everyone definitely knows.” Noah nodded. “It was probably the fastest information to travel through the pack in years.” Rae covered her face. “Oh my God.” Del laughed. “So the entire pack knows we’re mated.” “And apparently,” Elaine added, “they also know the three of you were kept very closely guarded.” Rae looked horrified. “I am never leaving this house again.” Trey laughed. “You’ll survive.” “I might not.” Remi finally laughed. The tension eased. But Marcus suddenly became serious. “There is something more important.” Everyone turned toward him. Marcus looked at Sam and Anna. “There have been attacks in Bayou Claret.” Sam’s expression immediately changed. “What kind?” “Wolfsbane.” Anna’s face went pale. “Again?” Marcus nodded. “Multiple attacks.” Layla looked between them. “Bayou Claret?” Sam nodded slowly. “That is where we live.” Marcus’s voice became more serious. “Yes.” David stepped forward. “How many attacks?” “Several reports.” Marcus looked toward Will, Trey, and Elijah. “And that means this may be bigger than Bayou Falls.” Will’s jaw tightened. “Nightshade.” Marcus nodded. “We don’t know that for certain yet.” Trey’s expression hardened. “But the pattern fits.” Elijah stepped forward. “Wolfsbane attacks here.” He looked at Sam and Anna. “Wolfsbane attacks in Bayou Claret.” Then he looked at Will. “Different locations.” Will nodded. “Same potential enemy.” Rae’s expression shifted from embarrassment to focus. “So they’re not just targeting us.” “No,” Marcus said. “They may be targeting supernatural communities everywhere.” Del’s face became serious. “How far does it go?” Marcus shook his head. “We don’t know yet.” Sam looked worried. “If there are attacks in Bayou Claret, our people could already be in danger.” Anna reached for his hand. Layla looked at David. David’s expression hardened. “We need to know if the attacks are connected.” Will nodded. “We’ll find out.” Trey stepped forward. “And we’re not waiting for another attack.” Elijah looked at Del. “Agreed.” Rae’s eyes narrowed. “I can start pulling information from local networks.” Trey immediately looked at her. “No.” Rae blinked. “No?” “You’re staying out of the field.” She stared at him. “I can help.” “I know.” “Then why—” “Because you’re my mate.” Rae opened her mouth. Then closed it. Trey softened his voice. “I need you safe.” Rae sighed. “Fine.” She pointed at him. “But I’m still working from the war room.” Trey smiled. “I figured.” Del stepped forward. “I’ll help her.” Elijah nodded. “You stay with Rae.” Remi looked at Will. “And me?” Will’s expression softened. “You’re staying with me.” Remi smiled. “Good.” Elaine watched the three couples. Then she looked at Layla, David, Anna, and Sam. “Whatever happens next, we handle it together.” Layla nodded. David stepped beside her. Sam looked at Marcus. “Then the old alliances need to become active again.” Marcus nodded. “They do.” Anna squeezed Sam’s hand. “If Nightshade is moving through multiple territories…” She looked around the room. “…then this isn’t just a Bayou Falls problem anymore.” The room fell silent. Three newly awakened women. Three Alpha mates. Two families tied together by old alliances. And now a threat spreading beyond the Bayou. Rae slowly looked at Del. Del looked at Remi. Remi looked at Will. Three women. Three possible pregnancies. And a war approaching from every direction. Rae finally broke the silence. “So…” Everyone looked at her. “If we’re potentially pregnant…” She pointed toward Trey, Elijah, and Will. “…someone better teach these three how to build a nursery.” Trey laughed. Elijah smiled. Will shook his head. And for one brief moment, the fear disappeared. But outside the pack house, somewhere far beyond Bayou Falls, another report came in. Another attack. Another shipment of wolfsbane. Another territory under threat. Nightshade wasn’t slowing down. It was spreading.
