The Vison

One week. That was how long Remi had been back in Bayou Falls. Seven days of hospital shifts. Seven days of awkward encounters. Seven days of pretending she didn’t notice Will watching her every chance he got. And seven days of Rae and Del reminding her that running was cheaper than therapy. “Come on!” Rae called over her shoulder. Remi pushed harder. “I’m coming!” “You call that running?” Remi laughed. “You hacked an Alpha’s phone and nearly got us banned from the pack. You don’t get to judge my running.” Rae glanced back. “I didn’t nearly get us banned.” Del jogged beside them. “You made an Alpha’s phone play Barbie Girl.” “That was an accident.” “You did it on purpose.” “Details.” Remi shook her head. “You two are impossible.” “Yet you love us,” Del said. “Unfortunately.” They ran along the quiet road bordering the Bayou, the early morning air cool and damp against their skin. For the first time since returning, Remi felt almost normal. Almost. Then Rae suddenly slowed. “Wait.” Remi looked over. “What?” Rae pointed ahead. “Oh, you’ve got to be kidding me.” Three men were running toward them. Three very familiar men. Will. Trey. Elijah. Remi groaned. “Of course.” Del laughed. “Looks like the universe has jokes.” Trey spotted them. His grin appeared immediately. “Well, look what the Bayou dragged in.” Rae rolled her eyes. “Keep running.” “Gladly.” The two groups continued toward each other. Remi tried to focus on the road. Not Will. Not his broad shoulders. Not the way his shirt clung to his body. Definitely not the way her pulse suddenly picked up. She looked away. Too late. Will had already noticed. “Morning, Remi.” She kept running. “Morning.” Trey looked at Rae. “Still hacking into things you shouldn’t?” Rae smiled. “Still leaving your security system vulnerable?” Trey laughed. “Touché.” Elijah looked at Del. “You’re quieter than them.” Del shrugged. “Someone has to be.” Remi was about to make a comment when Trey stepped closer to Rae. His hand brushed her arm. And everything changed. Rae stopped. Her eyes went wide. Her entire body went rigid. “Rae?” She didn’t answer. Her breathing became shallow. She grabbed Trey’s arm. Then suddenly— she saw something. Not the road. Not the trees. Not the people standing around her. Something else. A flash. Men hiding among the trees. Weapons raised. Metal glinting in the sunlight. Rifles. Bullets. Will. Trey. Elijah. Remi. Del. Rae watched the scene unfold in her mind. A shot. Then another. The bullets weren’t ordinary. They had been specially made. Wolfsbane. Enough to bring down a wolf. Maybe kill one. Then the vision shifted. She saw Remi falling. Will screaming. Trey grabbing her. Elijah shielding Del. More gunfire. Blood. Panic. Then— darkness. Rae gasped. She came back to reality. “DOWN!” Everyone froze. “What?” Trey asked. “GET DOWN!” Her voice was so urgent that no one questioned her. Rae grabbed Trey and dragged him toward the ground. “NOW!” Remi saw something in Rae’s eyes. Fear. Real fear. She turned toward the trees. “What did you—” The first shot cracked through the morning air. CRACK! Remi barely had time to react. Will moved faster. He grabbed her around the waist and pulled her down. Another shot tore through the air. CRACK! Will rolled, putting his body between Remi and the direction of the gunfire. “Stay down!” “Will—” “Remi!” His voice was pure Alpha command. She froze. Across the road, Trey had thrown himself over Rae. Elijah had grabbed Del and pulled her behind a large tree. More bullets ripped through the air. CRACK! CRACK! CRACK! Trees splintered. Dirt exploded around them. Will’s eyes flashed. Wolf. Remi stared at him. His body was tense, every muscle ready to move. “You okay?” She nodded. “What is happening?” “Someone is shooting at us.” “I figured that out!” Another bullet slammed into the tree beside them. Will looked toward the woods. His expression turned deadly. “Wolfsbane.” Remi’s stomach dropped. “What?” “Wolfsbane rounds.” He looked at her. “Stay behind me.” “I can protect myself.” “I know.” His eyes held hers. “But I’m still protecting you.” Something about the way he said it made her chest tighten. She hated that. She hated that even after nine years, he could still make her feel something she didn’t understand. Across the road, Rae was breathing hard. Trey looked down at her. “How did you know?” Rae stared at him. “I saw it.” “Saw what?” “The shooting.” Trey frowned. “You saw this?” Rae nodded. “Before it happened.” Elijah looked over. “How?” Rae shook her head. “I don’t know.” Del stared at her. “Rae…” “I touched him.” She pointed at Trey. “And then I saw everything.” Trey looked at his hand. “So touching me gave you a vision?” “I don’t know!” Another bullet struck nearby. Everyone ducked. Rae’s eyes widened. “They’re moving.” Will looked toward the trees. “How many?” “Five.” Rae’s voice was suddenly certain. “Five shooters.” Elijah’s expression hardened. “Where?” Rae pointed. “Two east. One behind us. Two moving toward the road.” Elijah looked at Will. “She’s right.” Will nodded. “Stay here.” “No.” Remi’s voice stopped him. Will looked back. “I’m not hiding while you go after them.” His eyes narrowed. “This isn’t negotiable.” Remi stepped closer. “You don’t get to order me around.” “I just did.” “Still an arrogant ass.” Trey almost laughed despite the gunfire. “Yep. She’s definitely back.” Will ignored him. Another shot rang out. CRACK! The bullet struck the ground inches from Remi’s foot. Will immediately grabbed her and pulled her against his chest. For one second, everything stopped. His arms around her. Her hands against his chest. His heartbeat pounding beneath her palms. His scent filling her senses. And somewhere deep inside Remi— something stirred. Something wild. Something that felt strangely familiar. Will froze too. His eyes dropped to hers. Neither spoke. Then another gunshot shattered the moment. Will turned toward the woods. His expression changed. The Alpha returned. “Stay behind me.” This time, Remi didn’t argue. Not because she wanted to obey him. But because something inside her had suddenly whispered the same thing. Trust him. She didn’t know where the voice came from. She only knew one thing. The attack wasn’t random. Someone had planned this. Someone knew exactly who they were. And the bullets weren’t meant for ordinary people. They were designed for wolves. Which meant whoever was hiding in those trees already knew something Remi didn’t. The Bayou wasn’t safe anymore. And somehow— the three women were at the center of it.
