I took a deep breath, my eyes lingering on my mother’s pale, unconscious form. It felt wrong to leave her, but Uncle Joe placed a firm hand on my shoulder.
“She’s safe with me,” he assured me. Your father was my very good friend, and your mom—she knows me well. She’s safe with me. Don’t worry.”
Safe. That word didn’t sit right with me. Nothing about this felt safe.
Your dad is waiting for you. Make him proud, Mia. We believe in you. He gave me a small smile. “And try not to give Lucian a hard time.”
I swallowed hard and nodded, my emotions tangled in a storm of fear, guilt, and determination.
Lucian scoffed beside me. “She already failed that part.”
