The car felt like a sauna. At seven-thirty a.m. the air was already warm and humid. Marie wondered how folks had managed before air conditioning robbed the heat of its stupefying discomfort. She pulled down the visor against the glare of sunshine, yet intrigued by the appearance of blue skies since clouds were the rule in Mobile. Last night, she and Rick had enjoyed a marvelous evening together. They’d celebrated their third anniversary at a bay-side restaurant, eating baked clams and lobster. They’d taken a romantic sunset stroll along the bay and come home to wine and petite fours that Marie’s mom had sent as an anniversary gift. Marie didn’t believe she’d ever been happier.
