Chapter 9“So why isn’t Tom Jones ever punished for his dalliances?” Daniel asked a classroom full of sleepy freshmen.
“I don’t think he did anything wrong,” somebody said from the back.
Daniel looked around. “Who was that? Jake?”
“Yeah.”
“Why don’t you think he did anything wrong? He had several affairs, including one with a woman who could have been his mother.”
“Yeah, but he didn’t lie about it,” Candie said. “Right?”
“So that makes the difference?” Daniel held up his hand and leaned on the corner of the lectern. “Now, don’t let your own personal beliefs color your view of his actions. Think about his behavior, and the consequences, within the morality of the book.”
