A few hours later Adrian came back with news. “I talked with your principal, and he’s giving you Tuesday and Wednesday off. He figures that should be enough time to recover from, and I quote: ‘This little mishap.’” They gave a disgusted snort. “I disagree with that, but that’s beside the point. The police are already looking into it, and they want to interview you two tomorrow.” Emily leapt to her feet.
“What? But we already talked to you!”
“They need it for the police record.” Adrian sighed and ran a hand through their hair, making it stick up even more. “I’m sorry, but it’s out of my hands.” Emily sighed.
“Fine. What else do we have to do?” She asked.
“That all depends on what they can find out. If there’s any evidence incriminating someone, they’ll interrogate them, it might become a court case and you’ll have to testify. If there’s no evidence, and they can’t trace anyone to the case...” They shrugged. “They won’t be able to do anything.”
It felt like the world was collapsing. “Whoever did this...won’t be charged?” I asked, not wanting to believe what I had heard. Emily put a comforting hand on my shoulder.
“That’s only if they can’t find who did it. There’s security cameras and stuff.”
“Anything else?” I asked. Adrian shook his head.
“I’ll see you two tomorrow. Don’t be late.” He looked pointedly at Emily.
She nodded. “Yeah, yeah, I know.” When Adrian left, she flashed me a huge smile. “I showed up late to an interview a few years ago. When I finally got there, one guy had left, one was an his phone, and the other was asleep at the table. Adrian was beet red for the entire interview. It was great. I’ll try not to be late this time, but I’m making no promises.”
I laughed. “At least try to be on time. I don’t want to be trapped in a room with three police officers with nobody to provide sarcastic commentary.” Emily gave my shoulder a squeeze. “I’ll try.”
