Chapter 9

Alex’s POV “I thought you were out for a night out, Sweetheart,” Uriel spoke softly to me after he kissed me on the lips. His voice was soft, but I knew that if his mother had not been in front of us, he would have greeted me with anger. “Sorry, Sweetheart. Your mom and I were engrossed talking to each other so we didn’t notice the time,” I answered him in a soft voice, but my facial expression was frowning. Uriel’s mom can’t see my face, so I’m free to frown in front of him to show that I didn’t like it when he kissed me. “Don’t scold your wife, Uriel. She’s telling the truth. We were so engrossed in talking that we didn’t notice the time,” my mother-in-law defended me. I smirked at Uriel and turned to face his mother with a sweet smile on my lips. “I don’t think we can go out again, Mom. If we go out again at night, Uriel will scold me,” I pretended to be sad to my mother-in-law, then looked down at Uriel. When I saw him trying to keep from arguing with me, I suppressed a smile to form on my lips. “Mom, I’m not scolding my wife. I’m just worried about her. It’s late, but she’s not here yet. Besides, I didn’t know you two were together,” Uriel said as an excuse. And when his mom was about to speak, he took the lead. He held her by both shoulders and guided her back into his car. “The best thing you should do is to go home, Mom. Dad is worried about you now. You know you are not allowed to stay out for a longer period because you might get sick.” His mom did not object when she was taken inside the car. “Let’s go shopping again, Alexa. I really enjoyed being with you,” Uriel’s mother smiled at me. “Of course, Mom! I also enjoyed being with you,” I answered quickly. It’s true. It was nice to talk with her. Besides, if his mom is eager for her daughter, I am eager for the attention and love of a mother. Maybe that’s why we got along so easily because we both filled the gap that we were looking for. “Good night, Mom,” Uriel said, then signaled his mother’s driver, Delfin, to leave. When his mom had already left, I immediately picked up the paper bags that contained the things my mother-in-law and I had bought, then I silently walked towards the door. But before I even got close to the door, Uriel angrily chased me and held me firmly by my left arm. “What exactly is your problem?” I asked. Based on his expression, he appears to be planning another fight with me. “My mom has a heart condition, and if something bad happens to her, I will never forgive you, Alexa,” he said in a warning voice. “And why is it my fault, Mr. Fontagio? Did I know that your mom has a heart condition?” I replied with a sigh, then quickly removed his hand that was holding mine, and then continued walking towards the door. I stopped walking when he spoke again. “Now you see the reason why I married you, Alexa. My mother likes you very much. She wants a daughter, but she can’t get pregnant because her heart is weak. She will die if she gets pregnant again. I want to make her happy, so I agreed to marry you,” said Uriel, who seemed to want to convey to me that he was really forced to marry my twin and that if his mother was not sick, he would never marry Alexa. Of course, he prefers to marry his dead bride. “You don’t have to repeat it, and always make it look like you don’t want to marry me, Uriel. But since we’re married, there’s nothing you can do but accept that. And let me tell you, I regret agreeing to marry you. You look handsome, but your behavior is far from the man of my dreams,” I replied with raised brows. I felt happy when I saw his eyes narrow as if he was insulted by what I said. Why? Is he the only one who knows how to insult? I can also do that. Now, where even. As he hurriedly approached me, Uriel’s eyes narrowed. I turned my back on him and ran to the door when I noticed the look on his face as if he wanted to twist my neck. I was about to open the door when he caught me and tightened his grip on both of my arms. “I’m not sure what Mom saw in you that she likes you so much, but I hope you don’t take advantage of her affection for you,” he said to me, his sharp eyes lower to the paper bags in my hands. “For your information, Mr. Fontagio, many guys like me even though I look like this, okay? Also, are you angry because your mom bought me these things? Let me tell you, I didn’t ask your mom to buy me a lot of things. She made me go shopping because my husband did not accompany me. If you are upset by that fact, then the things she bought for me are now yours,” I said, letting go of the paper bags I was holding. “Make sure that you wear all the things that your mom bought for me so they won’t be wasted. Wear the thin nighties she bought me, I’m sure that’s just right for you,” I added with a hint of irritation, but a smile on my lips. I shook off his hands that are holding me, then I turned away from him to continue my interrupted entry into the house. But I lost sight of the fact that I was already in front of the door, so when I faced it, my face bumped into the door jamb. I weakly let out a curse because I felt my brain shakes so hard. “Clumsy and silly,” Uriel said in a low voice, then pulled me a little bit so he could open the door. He gave me an annoying look before entering the house first. I was left with a frown as I winced and stroked my face. I thought I successfully irritated Uriel, but karma is real and caught up with me immediately.
