THE FIRST RULES
The morning after her failed escape attempt, Emilia awoke to the soft hum of the city below. Sunlight poured into the penthouse, illuminating the luxury that now felt like a cage. She sat up, rubbing her arms.
Every fiber of her body ached—not from physical pain, but from the suffocating knowledge that she was trapped.
And Jaxon… he was everywhere.
---
THE RULES OF HIS WORLD
Jaxon appeared silently in the doorway, perfectly dressed, immaculate, calm. But his presence carried a weight she could feel in her bones.
“You moved last night,” he said flatly, eyes scanning her like he could read her thoughts.
“I was… sleepwalking,” she muttered. A weak excuse, even to her own ears.
“Emilia,” he said, stepping closer, “there are rules in my world. You break them, there are consequences. You leave—real consequences. You understand?”
She swallowed hard. “I… understand.”
His eyes softened, just enough to make her heart skip. “Good. Because you’re not going anywhere without me.”
---
FORCED PROXIMITY
He handed her a small tablet. “Today, you’ll learn about my world. My empire, my enemies, and why you’re alive. Knowledge is safety. Ignorance is danger.”
Emilia nodded, realizing there was no point in protesting. For now, she had to survive.
As the day passed, Jaxon walked her through his life—cryptic business deals, shadowy associates, private security networks. The more she learned, the more dangerous the world outside felt. And the more she realized… he wasn’t lying when he said leaving could mean death.
---
THE FIRST CLOSE MOMENT
Dinner was quiet, tension crackling like electricity in the air. Jaxon sat across from her, eyes never leaving her face.
“You’re learning fast,” he said, voice low. “But knowledge doesn’t save you from feelings.”
Emilia frowned. “What feelings?”
“Fear,” he replied. “Obsession. Desire. Protection. They’re all intertwined, Emilia. And they all belong to you.”
Her breath hitched. The words were dangerous, intoxicating, and terrifying. She wanted to pull away, but her body didn’t obey.
---
A TEST OF TRUST
After dinner, he walked her to the balcony. The city lights sparkled below, a reminder of a world she once knew.
“Do you trust me?” he asked, his voice softer than usual.
She hesitated. The rational part of her screamed no—but another part—the part that wanted to survive, that wanted to understand him—said yes.
“I… I think I do,” she admitted cautiously.
Jaxon’s jaw tightened. “Good. Because you need to. Out there… they’ll kill you in a heartbeat if I’m not around.”
Emilia’s stomach knotted, fear and reluctant admiration mingling. She hated that she felt that pull, hated that his presence was magnetic, and hated even more that she could no longer tell where fear ended and fascination began.
---
CLOSING DANGER
The night ended quietly, but the tension never dissipated. Emilia lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, replaying every interaction.
She wasn’t free. And yet… she couldn’t shake the feeling that maybe, just maybe, she was safer in his world than out there alone.
But one thought kept her awake:
I’m living in a gilded cage. And the man who built it? He’s obsessed with me—and I have no idea why.
