CHAPTER 17 Special Treatment I knew something was wrong the moment nobody insulted me. Which sounded ridiculous. But after days of working here, I had gotten used to it. Move faster ! You're slow , an outsider. Those comments had become background noise. So when I walked into the servant hall that morning and nobody said anything— I noticed. Immediately. I paused at the entrance. People moved. Going about their respective duties but I had this feeling they were saying something. But their conversations got lowered when I entered. Eyes lifted. Then looked away. Too quickly. Too obviously. My stomach tightened. I ignored it. Or pretended to. A servant shoved folded sheets into my arms. No insult. I was surprised. Another handed me cleaning supplies. No complaints. O
