Chapter 7 : Ashes of a Luna

827 Words
The cold water burned my hands. I scrubbed harder. And harder. And harder… until my hands turned red and raw, but the stain on the floor refused to disappear—just like the stain on my name. “Faster.” The sharp voice made my shoulders stiffen. I didn’t turn. “I said faster, you useless thing.” I clenched my jaw and started going faster, the rough brush biting into my skin. The other maids stood at a distance, whispering among themselves. “Isn’t that the former Luna?” “What a pity …” “She deserves it.” Each word sank into my skin like needles , piercing through my body . A week ago, they bowed to me. Now… I was beneath even them. A sudden wave of dizziness hit me, and I paused, gripping the edge of the bucket. “Don’t tell me you’re already tired?” one of the older maids mocked. “You used to do nothing all day, didn’t you? Just warming the Alpha’s bed.” My grip on the bucket tightened. I swallowed whatever response they gave me. I couldn’t afford it. Not anymore. Not here. Not… like this. My hand unconsciously drifted to my stomach. Flat. Silent. But not empty. My chest tightened. I quickly pulled my hand away like I had been burned. No. I refused to think about it. Refused to feel anything about it. But the child… I squeezed my eyes shut briefly. I didn’t know whether it was a blessing… or a curse fate could ever give me. “Cassidy.” My body froze. That voice. Soft and caring. It sounded familiar. I slowly turned. The pack doctor stood at the entrance, his eyes filled with something I hadn’t seen in a long time . He was really concerned about me . “Follow me,” he said quietly. The other maids went silent. I stood up immediately, ignoring the ache in my body as I walked toward him. No one stopped me this time. No one dared to . The moment the door closed behind us, I felt it. The atmosphere changed Safe. For the first time in days… I felt safe. “You shouldn’t be working this hard,” he said, his voice low. “Not in your condition.” I let out a dry laugh. “My condition?” I repeated. “You mean my disgrace?” “Cassidy—” “I am not Luna anymore,” I cut in, my voice sharper than I intended. “Stop calling me that.” He sighed, but didn’t argue. Instead, he stepped closer. “You need to be careful,” he said. “Stress like this… it can harm the baby.” The baby. Those two words hit harder this time. I looked away. “I don’t care,” I whispered. But even I didn’t believe it. A heavy silence filled the room before he spoke again. “There is something you should know.” I frowned slightly, turning back to him. “What?” His expression changed. Serious . Cautious. “Ravenna has been asking questions.” For a second, everything in me just froze “What kind of questions?” “About your condition… your health… and whether you’re carrying anything.” My breath hitched. “She suspects something,” he continued. “And if she finds out…” He didn’t need to finish. I already knew what would happen Ravenna wouldn’t let this child live. I didn't know about Aaron but with the look of things I wasn't gonna allow anybody know about it My chest rose and fell unevenly as panic slowly crept in. “What do I do?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. The doctor hesitated. Then, he stepped even closer, lowering his voice. “There might be a way out.” My eyes snapped to his. “A way… out?” I repeated. He nodded slowly. “But it’s dangerous. And once you choose it… there’s no coming back.” Something inside me shifted. The weak, broken girl who had cried in that dungeon… She was still there. But something else was rising with her. Something colder. Stronger. “I have nothing left here,” I said quietly. And for the first time since everything fell apart… I meant it. The doctor studied my face carefully before giving a small nod. “Then be ready,” he said. “Because when the time comes… you’ll have to run.” Run. The word echoed in my mind. Not as fear But as a beginning. That night, as I lay on the thin, uncomfortable bed, my hand slowly moved to my stomach again. This time… I didn’t pull away. My fingers curled slightly against it. My expression hardened. “They think I’m broken,” I whispered into the darkness. My eyes slowly closed. “But they have no idea… what they’ve created.”
