Barame slid the shoji door aside, and they entered the courtyard where Hidekazu and Masanori first met him. This time, a woman lounged against the silk pillows on one of the veranda’s beds, skewering orange slices with clawed finger cuffs.
Her kohl-darkened eyes narrowed on Masanori. “Here I was, thinking you would never come,” she said.
“This is Motobushi Totome Kansai, the Windsmith of the East,” Barame said, “and she will be your teacher, Genshu Masanori.”
Masanori recognized Kansai’s name from stories alongside Barame’s. Though he couldn’t recall much about her, she must have earned official recognition for her skills as a Windsmith—a subset of abilities that came with mastering the wind element—in the form of a title after the Reunification Wars.
