Chapter 4: The USB

928 Words
Zoe didn’t sleep. She sat on her bed, the USB drive from Avery on her nightstand. The room was dark except for the streetlight coming through her window. Rain was still hitting the glass. Marcus’s text glowed on her phone: See you at 9 AM tomorrow to sign? Avery’s voice echoed in her head: Don’t sign anything yet. Don’t go to that board meeting alone. At 2:14 AM, Zoe gave up. She grabbed her laptop. It was old, slow, and the screen had a crack in the corner. She plugged the USB in. The laptop made the little chime sound. Folder opened. There were 6 files. File 1: Carter_Holdings_Financials_1998-2024.pdf File 2: Offshore_Accounts_List.xlsx File 3: Board_Meeting_Recordings.zip File 4: Marcus_Reed_Emails.pdf File 5: Photos_James_Carter.jpg File 6: Contract_Draft_Zoe_Carter.docx Zoe’s hands shook as she clicked the photos first. There was her grandpa. But not the grandpa in oil-stained coveralls. This James Carter wore a tailored suit. He was standing on a yacht. He was shaking hands with a senator. He was cutting a ribbon in front of a hospital with his name on it: The James Carter Wing. Another photo. Him, younger, maybe 35, standing next to a man Zoe didn’t recognize. Both of them were smiling, holding up a newspaper. The headline: CARTER HOLDINGS ACQUIRES SHIPPING GIANT FOR 2.3B. He’d never said a word. Zoe clicked File 4: Marcus_Reed_Emails.pdf. The first email was from 3 years ago. The day her grandpa died. From: Marcus Reed To: Board of Directors Subject: J.C. “James is gone. As per his instructions, we are to hold all assets in trust until Zoe Carter turns 25 or claims her inheritance. No one is to contact her until then. She must not know.” Zoe was 22 now. She’d turned 22 last month. She scrolled. Another email, 6 months ago: From: Marcus Reed To: CFO Carter Holdings Subject: Transfer “Move 40 million from account CH-7741 to shell company RH Solutions. Label it ‘consulting fees’. Zoe cannot see this before she signs.” 40 million. Consulting fees. Zoe felt sick. She opened File 3: Board_Meeting_Recordings.zip. There was one audio file. Dated 2 weeks ago. She hit play. Marcus’s voice filled her tiny room. “...she’ll sign. She has no choice. 4.7 billion and she’s working at a cleaning company? She’ll take it. And once she’s CEO, we vote her out in 6 months. The bylaws allow it. By then the money will be moved. She gets the title, we get the empire.” Another voice. A woman. “Are you sure she won’t ask questions?” “She’s 22 and broke,” Marcus laughed. “She’ll be grateful.” Zoe stopped the audio. Her chest hurt. File 2: Offshore_Accounts_List.xlsx. There were 14 accounts. Cayman Islands. Switzerland. Singapore. Total: 2.1 billion dollars. All under “Carter Holdings” but the signatory was Marcus Reed. File 1: Financials. Carter Holdings was worth 4.7 billion. But 3.2 billion of that was tied up in lawsuits. Illegal dumping. Bribery. A factory collapse in 2019 that killed 11 people. And her grandfather’s name was on all of it. Zoe closed the laptop. She couldn’t breathe. 4.7 billion. But it was dirty. And Marcus was stealing it. And they thought she was stupid. Her phone buzzed. 3:30 AM. Unknown number. Avery. Did you look? Zoe typed back with shaking fingers. Yes. Then you know. Don’t sign tomorrow. Come to me. We can expose them. But you have to choose tonight. Zoe stared at the ceiling. Option 1: Go to Reed Tower at 9 AM. Sign. Become CEO of a criminal empire. Be a puppet for 6 months while Marcus drained it. Option 2: Walk away. Let it go to charity. Stay broke. Option 3: Fight. She picked up the USB. It felt heavy. Like a weapon. At 7:00 AM she was showered and dressed. Not in the black dress. In jeans and a hoodie. She put the USB in her pocket. She didn’t go to Reed Tower. She texted Marcus: Need to reschedule. Family emergency. Then she texted Avery: Where? Avery replied in 2 seconds: Same diner. 10 AM. Bring the USB. Zoe left her apartment. The city looked different again. Not like it could be hers. Like it was trying to swallow her. She got to the diner at 9:55. Avery was already there, in the same booth. Two coffees on the table. “You came,” Avery said. “I have questions,” Zoe said. “Good,” Avery replied. “Because I have answers. And a plan.” Avery slid a folder across the table. Inside was a news article draft. The headline: BILLION DOLLAR EMPIRE BUILT ON LIES: HEIR TO COME FORWARD. “If we release this, with the USB evidence, Marcus goes to jail. The board goes down. And you...” Avery paused. “You can take what’s left and do something good with it. Like your grandfather should have.” Zoe picked up the draft. Her name was in it. Zoe Carter, Whistleblower. “Why are you helping me?” Zoe asked. “Because James saved my life 15 years ago,” Avery said quietly. “And because someone has to stop Marcus before he hurts more people.” Zoe looked down at the USB in her hand. Then at the folder. Then at Avery. Outside, a black SUV pulled up in front of the diner. Tinted windows. The door opened. Two men in suits got out. And they were looking right at their window. Avery’s face went pale. “We have to go. Now.”
