POV: Maya I watched the water swallow them and something inside me snapped. Not broke. Snapped into place. "No," I said. The word came out quiet but absolute. "No, not like this." I threw myself into the opening before anyone could stop me, sliding down into the flooded tunnel. The cold water hit me like a thousand knives. It was already chest deep and rising fast, the current strong and merciless. Bodies floated in the darkness. Some are still moving. Some were not. I waded through the water toward the source of the flow. My legs barely worked, the serum eating through my nervous system. But I could see it now, a massive crack in the tunnel wall where water gushed through with incredible force. An underground spring, maybe connected to the river miles away. The pressure was immense.
