As James stepped out of the courthouse, he couldn’t contain the grin spreading across his face. He felt lighter than he had in years—finally free, unburdened, like he was a young teenager all over again. The relief of the divorce washed over him like a wave, filling him with an almost giddy happiness. He couldn’t help but chuckle to himself, breathing deeply as he savored this newfound independence.
His thoughts were interrupted by a familiar voice. Chase stood nearby, looking both confused and amused as he took in James’s euphoric expression. Without thinking, James strode over and pulled Chase into a tight hug, almost like an overexcited dog greeting its owner. Chase squirmed, glancing around nervously. “Bro, we’re in the courthouse—have some dignity, man!” he whispered. James just rolled his eyes, laughing, and gave him another squeeze before stepping back.
“You look ridiculously happy,” Chase remarked, still bewildered. “Like a puppy who just got his favorite treat. What’s with you today?”
James’s eyes sparkled with excitement as he leaned in. “It’s done, Chase. The divorce is final. Linda and I are officially over.” He could hardly believe the words himself, but they felt so right. “It’s like I’ve been buried alive for ten years, and now… I’m finally free.”
Chase raised his eyebrows, the confusion fading into a knowing smile. “So, that’s what all this is about? Man, no wonder you’re acting like a kid again.” James laughed, the relief pouring out of him as he explained the details—Linda’s endless demands, her lies and betrayals, her fight for money and property with no thought of Alvin or the family they had tried to build. He could finally put it all behind him.
As they walked down the courthouse steps together, Chase clapped him on the back. “Well, here’s to the return of the old James. I think you’ve earned it.” And with that, they walked on, James’s heart feeling as light as his smile, ready for a new beginning.

As they walked down the courthouse steps, Chase turned to James, curiosity flashing in his eyes. “So, what about Alvin? Have you thought about him?”
James paused, his expression turning serious. “Honestly, Chase, I don’t think he’s my real son. Given everything Linda did, I have to question that. I even suspect he might have a brother somewhere—she adopted him from an orphanage, but who knows what else she’s been hiding?”
Chase frowned, his concern evident. “Are you okay with this? What will you do about Alvin?”
James sighed, running a hand through his hair. “I have to take responsibility for him. I’ve cared for him since he was a baby. To just walk away now would be cruel. I may have my doubts, but I can’t abandon him. He deserves a father, regardless of the truth about his lineage.”
Chase nodded, understanding the weight of James’s words. “What’s the one thing you’re really concerned about, then?”
James’s gaze hardened slightly. “It’s about Alvin and his brother’s future. I can’t just marry another woman to give them a mother, can I?” He chuckled sarcastically, but there was an underlying tension in his voice.
Chase joined in the laughter, but he knew this was serious. “Well, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. We’ll figure it out later. Right now, your priority should be making sure Alvin and his brother are united. They deserve happiness, especially now that you’ve taken on this responsibility.”
James nodded, determination setting in. “Exactly. I have to ensure they both have a chance at a happy life. That’s all that matters to me now.”

As James headed home, eager to check on Alvin, Chase lingered behind, his thoughts clouded with doubt. A wave of guilt swept over him as he thought about Jenny. Had he come between James and Jenny’s relationship? He’d always believed he was doing the right thing, but now, watching James walk away, a small voice inside questioned his choices. What if I hadn’t started dating Jenny? What if I’d let things play out between them?
Chase felt a gnawing uncertainty. Maybe, if he’d stepped back, this tangled mess could have been avoided, and his friends wouldn’t have gone through so much pain. Did I make a mistake? he wondered. The idea of having caused this trouble for them filled him with regret, a guilt that sat heavy, leaving him feeling conflicted and unsure about the path he’d chosen.
