THE BRODER

From our room I could hear Amara's cries. Her beautiful white baby has been taken away from her. She gave birth a month ago to a beautiful blonde girl with blue eyes. We were all proud of her but we knew it won't be long before the child will be separated from her mother and taken to only God knows where.

Just like some other girls, Amara came here from Nigeria to work abroad and send money home. She saw an AD online for a caregiver abroad with all her travelling details paid and covered for. She was very excited to travel abroad that she forgot to sit and think. She usually say in her Nigerian tongue " na poverty cause ham" ( it's the fault of being poor).

And just like the few ones, we were kidnapped on the streets and caged here to serve as brooders. I was kidnapped because I couldn't run faster. My sisters ran as fast as they could forgetting that my little legs can't outrun three hefty bodied-men.

When I was brought here, I was barely Thirteen and the youngest amongst the other girls. I became the maid, I cleaned after the pregnant ones, the babies and even assisted in child birth. I thought I'd escape the pains of brooding.

One day when I was sixteen, one of the Savannah's men, Saga saw me bathing and I immediately knew that I was finished. My instinct told me that I'll be the newest brooder and that I became.

Saga came to our room that night and told me to follow him. He held my hands as we walked to his personal room , a little room he shares alone.

When we got to his room, he told me to pull my clothes and I did. We were used to being naked in the presence of all men that we forgot what pride and dignity means anymore.

When I knew that I'll be damned was when he pulled his clothes off him and he was left in his bathing suit. I couldn't look at him, I've never seen any of the men naked before.

He told me to lie down while he climbed on me. I didn't understand what was going on until I heard him say" I'll make a woman outta you virgin Mary" I wept as he went on with his thrusts. It was painful and nothing more. I cried till I blanked out.

The next day I woke up in the clinic. Yes, we have a clinic where medical treatments are rendered like any other hospital.

Doctor Segundo came into the room and smiled at me.

" How's my patient doing this morning?" I really don't understand who that question is meant for. He knows what goes on in this f****d up place yet he pretends all the time to know nothing.

" I heard you became a woman yesterday. Very soon, we'll have mini you running around the place. Don't worry you'll be fine, it happens to everyone at the first time but you'll be fine as it goes on" I wished I could wipe out that smile from his face. He's an absolute disgrace of a doctor. It's official I hate him . I felt severe pains at the v****a that I couldn't pee. Everything it gets in counter with liquid, it hurts badly.

Sunny, two years older than me, told me I have a cut there. She said the bastard hurt me badly. All my roommates comforted me , they all took care of me as their youngest.

We're thirty in number, five for every room. In my room, we have Amara, Sunny, bahle, Amina and me. We were five friends till we lost bahle three years later in child birth. They performed a s**t of a surgery to safe only the baby and the mother died.

Some months after my incident with Saga, I began sick, I'd throw up and was always sleeping. The girls all know, they told me that's the first sign of pregnancy.

I was scared all the time, scared for my health, scared for my child too. I know that the circumstances surrounding the way my child was conceived was not proper but I still loved my child. I think I felt the child when he started kicking. It was Very fascinating experience for me.

I think apart from my roommates, no-one else knew I was pregnant till doctor Segundo came visiting. Sometimes he does room to room consulting to be sure we're all medically fit. Immediately he got to my side, I could tell he already knew I was hiding a baby . He left the room without saying anything and we all became worried.

Amara: do you think they'll abort it?

Amina: they'll definitely abort it!

" Abort what? What are you people talking about?"

Bahle: Don't tell her please

Amina: I think we need to tell her to prepare her before hand.

" Tell me what? You guys are scaring me. What's going on? Someone should talk to me now!"

Amina: I think they'll abort your baby. Like kill the foetus before it grows.

" Why? I thought they like us pregnant "

Amina: they do like us pregnant but the truth is that this child is not for a client. It has no base. It's an unplanned expense for the factory"

" How? Were they not aware I was r***d by that i***t called Saga? How is my baby unplanned when they all saw saga violate me all in the name of making a woman out of me?" I cried as I remembered that miserable day again. I felt hands hugging me and I saw all my roommates comforting me.

Later that day, we all heard Saga's cries as he was flogged and beaten. I was called to the boss office. It was my first time entering his office. The factory was six storey building with no window or entrance door. None of us know the exit door. The building comprises of six rooms for all thirty brooders, a clinic, a theatre for surgeries, single rooms for over fifty body guards, a sitting hall for movies and chitchat between brooders, a hall-like bathroom and a washing room. The other offices are not opened to Brooders so I don't know what they're for.

Reaching the office, I saw Mr Savannah, doctor Segundo, Some armed guards and a wounded Saga all in the office.
