CAUGHT IN THE ACT
"What was that?" He asks me while he watches the bird fly off. He looks like he wants to snatch the bird from its flight to find out what I just sent.
I was taken unawares. How didn't I feel someone at my back?
"Ermmm… my lord, I was sending a letter to my parents and my sister. They always love to hear from me every week," I stutter. I hope that I didn't just let my guard down.
He stares at me blankly. I try to read the expression on his face, but there seem to be none as it all seemed to have been concealed by him. For the first time in my entire years of existence, I feel nervous and wish that I have the ability to read minds. I wouldn't mind getting into his head and reading his thoughts.
"You were sending what messages? Why did you have to send it this late at night?" He finally speak up, and I release the breath I've been holding unknowingly. I've never been this nervous all my life. The moon is reflecting on his hard features now. He isn't smiling.
It makes me remember me kneeling in his room just a few minutes ago. Then all of a sudden a spark of realization hits me hard.
For him to ask me these questions means that he didn't see the letter, and he's just suspecting me. Therefore any thing I do now will either heighten his suspicions or allay them. So I compose myself and reply him, not allowing any form of fear to set in.
"I finished my chores late today so I didn't have the time to write it early enough. I just finished writing the letter a couple of minutes ago, that's why I have to send it this late," I reply him and step away from his steely glare.
My heart is racing fast as I pray that he believe whatever I tell him. I don't feel at ease even though I'm trying not to show it.
For the next minutes, he stares at me still having that blank expression that explains nothing, lurking his face. His expression is scaring me, but I dare not to show how scared I am right now. I don't want his suspicious to heightened.
"Get back to your room," His chilled voice echoe in the air and without waiting for his next words to escape his lips, I rush to my room, banging the door behind me as soon as I walk inside. That was close.
Few weeks later
I just finished cleaning up and came upstairs to write a letter. During my rest time, I had already found out what was in the secret bush. I was so surprised to have seen them in large quantities.
There were war weapons there. I was so chilled to the bone. These people were peaceful, how come they had war weapons? I saw so many weapons that they could use. I had to inform the king immediately
This information was an absolute catch. The king would be impressed at such news. I ran up the stairs to write a letter to them.
This time around I had to be more careful. Nicholas wasn't around, his room was locked. I still had to double-check once more.
I had asked Hoot;his butler. "He went to the stables and won't be coming back anytime soon. Why are you asking about him?" He had replied me in his meek unsuspecting voice.
"No there's nothing. He asked me to report to him later. His door is locked, that's why I asked to be sure where he is," I lied through my nose. The butler nodded and let me off. He went into his room.
Then I dashed up the stairs to quickly write. Little did I know that it was a trap set by Nicholas himself. I had fallen into his trap unknowingly.
I sit on my bed and start writing.
Dear King
This is to inform you of my new discovery. The werewolves are preparing war ammunitions in the cove I wrote about in the last letter. I have never seen such weapons.
The weapons are new. They seem to be preparing for a war. I also found out another way into our kingdom. They may be…
Someone yanks my door open with force. I look up to acknowledge the person, when the blood drains from my face and my mouth gapes open.
That feeling you get when you're in trouble. The fear that sneaks up your throat when someone opens your can of worms. Yes! I have that feeling right now.
Nicholas Sansone takes fast strides towards me and collects the paper from me. "Damn! I forgot to lock the door in an haste to get the letter written fast. How could I have forgotten to lock the door?" It's too late for regrets. Nicholas has discovered my secrets.
He is already reading the contents of the letter. My tongue is tied in my throat. I sit there pale before him like a sinner awaiting the full force of judgement. My hands are gripping the upholstery so tight that it could tear any minute.
My back is against my bed. I look around for a means to escape but there's none except my window. I can't jump down, I'll break my neck off. What can I do? How do I escape his reach?
I allow him take in all the contents of the letter. Oh Avery, how could you be so stupid? How could you ask his butler about his movements? I pray for the ground to open up and swallow me because that is my only hope of escape
"So you are really a spy?" His deadly snarl frightens me. He bends over me in rage while he drags my hair into a forceful grip. His breath fanning my nostrils and my brain is trying to process the fact that Nicholas Sansone has just caught me red-handed with a letter about their mission.
What is my fate now?...
