Chapter 3

Lorenzo sat on the hospital bench outside the ward. The cold air slapped his face, but he didn’t seem to pay much attention to it. His mind was on what Evan had told him today. After the unjust beating he had received from Evan, he still had to speak gently to him so he wouldn’t get him expelled from school. A sigh escaped his lips. What had he done to deserve this? Why couldn’t he just be born like other children with a golden spoon in their mouths? His chest felt heavy. He looked up at the heavens and saw the moon shining brightly from where he was seated. “Why can't I be like other children?” he murmured softly, still looking up at the sky. How great it would be for him to be rich—just like them—so he wouldn’t be treated like trash. His mind went to Ava, his beautiful girl whom he had lost to Evan. Lorenzo knew that Evan was clearly not as attractive or good-looking as he was, but all the girls wanted him because of how rich he was. If only he were that rich! He sighed. Well, it was all just fantasies—building castles in the air. He was clearly not born rich, and neither could he become rich within the next few hours. The world did not work like fictional movies. For now, he was just Lorenzo, one of the poorest students in the school, who did many jobs just to pay his bills, yet still managed to surpass his mates in exams. Tomorrow was another day. He was going to tell the hospital staff to discharge him very early because another stay would lead to more expenses. He was still thinking when his phone began to ring. It was an unknown number. Immediately, his thoughts went to Evan. Evan must be the one calling him. He placed his phone back on his lap and continued staring at the beautiful blooming flowers planted at a corner. The number persisted and called seven times. On the eighth ring, Lorenzo finally decided to pick up. “Hello, Evan, what else do you want from me?! I am not going after Ava. You can have her to yourself. Can you just let me be now?!” he lamented. “Hello, am I speaking to Lorenzo Byers?” the person on the other end said politely. “Lorenzo Byers? I don't know who that is. This must be a mistake. This is Lorenzo Sinclair! Wrong number.” He said in annoyance, about to end the call. “Mr. Enzo! It really is you, after all this time,” the man said, sounding respectful and excited. Lorenzo scoffed. What the hell was he saying? This must be one of those scammers who acted polite so they could get money from him. “Look, I need you to understand that I don't have money or anything to offer you. I am poorer than a church rat. Don’t waste your strength on a poor person like me!” he said, laughing out loud. The other person paused, listening patiently, before speaking again softly. “I understand your plight, sir. However, I want to assure you that I am not a scammer. I would like to explain something important to you, sir. If you don’t mind, can you turn on your location so we can track you, sir?” “I should share my location with you? What if you’re a kidnapper? I know I am poor and useless; however, I have my whole life ahead of me. You can’t just—” “I understand you, sir. I promise I am not a kidnapper or scammer. I just really need to meet with you right now, sir!” he said, trying to sound as assuring as possible. Lorenzo felt something calm inside his voice. Well, if he came, at least he would have someone to lament all his life problems to. And even if he planned to kidnap him, it would be difficult since this was the hospital where everyone was seated and watching— “I have nothing to lose anyway. Come to Novacorp Hospital,” he said simply before turning on his phone location. “Okay, sir. I will be with you in a minute,” the man said before ending the call. In less than five minutes, at the same spot where he sat, Lorenzo heard the sound of a car moving. He turned toward the direction, and his mouth dropped open in shock. He had never expected to see something like that. A black-and-red car came to a stop a few feet away from where Lorenzo sat on the railing. Although Lorenzo was poor, it didn’t mean he couldn’t recognize the expensive cars he used to see on screen at a glance. The car door opened like wings, and a man stepped out. He looked to be in his late 30s and looked extremely expensive. His suit had expensive jewelry curled around it, sparkling under the lights. Lorenzo looked at the man in utter confusion. What the hell was an expensive, high-class man like him doing here? Every composure, every step, every arm swing, and his aura screamed luxury, and Lorenzo’s heart couldn’t help but beat fast. He wondered what trouble he had caused to make a man of such calibre walk toward him. As soon as the man got in front of Lorenzo, he dropped to his knees without hesitation and bowed deeply. “Sir Lorenzo, I am so happy to finally meet you!!”
