TROUBLE ON THE SECOND DAY

1760 Words
Mayson POV I don’t know what is worse, the fact that Emma and I survived our first day or that we had to go back again.. Don’t get me wrong, yesterday was fun, but also challenging. On the very first day, we'd already received assignments to be completed at the end of the term. And let me tell you, it’s three books worth of work. Nothing special happened yesterday except for people staring, but that I can live with. What I did notice was everyone smelled human, and it got me thinking, ‘I can’t be the only wolf hiding among humans.’ It bothered me the whole day and everyone I interacted with. I looked for certain signs. For one, if two wolves make eye contact, we can see each other’s true eye color and not those of our human body. If we make contact, say by touching our hands or any part of exposed skin, we’ll feel the warmth because our temperatures are higher than humans, and most importantly, not every wolf can hide their scent and if they are using wolfsbane spray to hide their scent, it will smell like a chemical if you get too close, from far away you won’t be able to smell it. Wolfsbane itself is very harmful to a wolf, but if you can get someone who can mix the spray correctly it won’t cause harm or long-term damage. I met a lot of new people yesterday and it was good to talk to other people, but they were very nosy. All of them had questions like, “where do you come from? How long have you been here? How old are you?” and many, many more. I didn’t answer them and just politely redirected every question until Emma came to save me. I’m not weak or hopeless, but these are humans, and they can do more harm to me than I can to them and at the end of the day they’ll all get hurt if I’m exposed. I didn’t come here to cause trouble or put anyone in danger, I came here for a fresh start. I woke up in a good mood this morning. I didn’t have any disturbing dreams or thoughts or flashbacks. I slept better and I’m well rested. I stopped criticizing myself over things I cannot change and now I will focus on the things I can change. There are a lot of small wolves in the world, some even smaller than I am. I got out of bed and did my morning routine and then I went to raid the fridge. Emma kept her word and bought groceries. The only downside is I must cook and clean for the rest of the week since Jay isn’t talking to either one of us. Jay just pretends that we don’t exist when we’re at the university, even if we see each other during lunch break or at the end of the day. It doesn’t matter though, because at least he stopped putting pressure on me. I barely had the table set when the door swung open, and Emma just waltzed in like it’s her place. I looked her up and down, admiring the white floral dress and flat silver shoes. Her black hair is hanging loosely around her shoulders, and she is wearing glasses today instead of her contact lenses. She saw me staring and crossed her arms waiting for me to say something. “You look beautiful.” I said, smiling at her. Her eyes lit up and she closed the door behind her. “I thought you’d tell me to go change.” She said, slightly twisting from side to side, making the dress sway with the movements. “Why would I do that?” I asked and pulled her chair out, signaling for her to sit down. “I don’t know. I was just scared that it’d be too much.” Emma said, sitting down with a soft sigh. “This is university, not school. You can wear whatever you want.” I said, sitting down. “Speaking of, are you going to be okay today?” Emma asked. I saw her worried expression and the way she bit her lip told me she was nervous. “I’ll be fine. I just didn’t want to be rude because the last thing I want is to cause trouble.” I said, speaking before I thought. “What do you mean?” Emma asked and I cursed myself for not being more careful. I looked away trying to come up with a lie, but I couldn’t, so I just shrugged my shoulders and stuffed my mouth full of food. “Where do you come from?” Emma asked and I checked on the food and started coughing. I swallowed what was left in my mouth and took a sip of water. “Huh?” I asked, pretending I didn’t hear, but she knew I heard because she just crossed her arms on the table and leaned forward. “ Your accent says you’re not from here, and you are way too pale to have been living in the sun, or have you been locked away in a secret cave deprived from sunlight?” Emma said jokingly, but for me she was very close to the truth… too close. “How did you know?” I asked, looking at her with wide eyes. “Know what?” she asked, looking at me with her head tilted in confusion. “That I was locked away?” I asked, trying my very best to keep a straight face. “What?” she asked, looking at me with a horrified expression. All traces of humor were gone from her eyes as she grew pale. “Gotcha!” I said, pointing my finger towards her, no longer able to keep the laughter in. I burst out laughing. “You are an A**hole Mayson.” Emma said, no longer in shock, but she looked angry now. “You imagined the worst, so I just played along.” I said, holding my hands up in surrender when she just glared at me. “I come from Canada. And you’re right, I didn’t get much sun because we lived close to the mountains.” I said and she let out a deep sigh, holding her hand over her heart. “You really scared me for a second,” Emma said, and I just laughed it off. We arrived at the university and as we walked everyone stared. ‘When will they stop staring?’ I thought to myself as Emma, and I walked towards the square where we were told to wait every morning. “ That’s them!” I heard someone say and looked up. When I looked up, a group of girls quickly looked away as if they weren’t staring a second ago. I lowered my head and listened in on their conversation. “I’m telling you they are together and, if they are, you don’t stand a chance.” “I don’t care, I’m more beautiful anyway, so why wouldn’t he pick me?” “You are so full of yourself, Lisa.” “And you’re not? You are the one that took the photos.” “And? It’s not like I’m trying to take something that isn’t mine.” “Just watch and learn.” I couldn’t listen anymore because Emma demanded my attention. She tapped my shoulder and I really wanted to ignore her because I was curious to know what that group of girls would do, but I couldn’t take it anymore and looked at Emma. “What?” I asked, looking at her. “What the hell are you doing?” Emma asked and I looked at her confused. “What?” I asked in a lower tone. “I’ve been talking to you, but you didn’t even hear me, and I think your palms are about to bleed.” Emma said, and I looked down at my fisted hands. I don’t know what I had been thinking… no, I know exactly what I had been thinking. Those girls reminded me of the way Karlie used to behave around Tylor. How she and her friends demanded his attention and hearing these human girls reminded me of them. “I’m fine.” I said, trying to give Emma a reassuring smile, but I failed. “Let go of him Jake!” I heard a girl yell and looked back to see what was happening. “Or what? You’ll tell daddy… oh that’s right you don’t have one.” A tall muscular guy said, holding a young boy up by his collar. “Just let go of him Jake.” The girl said in a calmer tone, although I could hear the sadness in her voice. I saw the muscular guy pull back his fist and, although I will regret this, I didn’t have a choice. I ran over and caught the guy’s fist just before it connected with the boy’s face. I heard a gasp and looked toward the girl who had been asking this guy to let go of the young boy. “She asked to let go.” I said in a stern tone, letting go of the guy’s arm. He let go of the boy and turned towards me. The boy scrambled away and now I’m in trouble. “Who do you think you are?” the guy asked, looking at me, and I could see the anger in his eyes. “Don’t do this.” I said in a warning tone, looking at the guy in front of me as he started laughing. I stared at him, knowing his kind all too well. He straightened up and, before thinking, swung his fist which I caught an inch away from my face. His eyes widened and I could see fear in them as I stared at him using some of my strength and squeezed his hand as I lowered it before I let go. “ Don’t ever do this again,” I said and turned around and walked away. I took Emma’s arm and dragged her away with me. as we rounded the corner, the most amazing scent hit my nose. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, inhaling the scent. My eyes shot open as I stood there frozen in place as I heard my wolf howl in happiness as he said the one word. I didn’t think I'd ever hear again… “MATE.”
